i don’t really understand that final point I also don’t know if White is the guy…we need to see more….but man he’s already shown SO MUCH more in 5 games than Zach has shown in 20. It’s night and fucking day. White has had two REALLY good games….Zach still hasn’t matched either the Bengals or Bears games in 20 fucking tries, and in fact has looked like total shit in more than half his games. Dude throws for 170 per game. This is not 1954…in todays game no One throws for 77 fucking yards and 40% completion. It just doesn’t happen. He’s been outright shit…as evidenced by his WORST IN THE LEAGUE ratings. so if your point is you already know White is not the guy, then you’d have to say Zach is absolutely not the guy because he’s been so much worse. And it’s not even close. White is much closer to be “the guy” than Zach is. I guess if you look at physical traits sure he’s athletic and has a stronger arm than White, but through 20 games he’s shown he can’t play QB at a high level…he shows brief flashes…a tight throw here, a great scramble there… that give you hope, but he has way more bad than good….and in the fundamental things. I guess there’s a chance he can put it together, and yeah that would be great, but I’d say the odds are not good on that my two cents
Well, if it were one on one sport, yes, he won the game. Like if it is a UFC fight or a tennis match. But this is a team sport. I think defense having two takeaways and our players not fumbling twice had something to do with the first win against Buffalo vs the loss last Sunday. Actually a lot to do with with it. You remember, both takeaways were in red zone. Our defense and Breece Hall had a lot to do in wins in GB and Denver. The point is that saying "he" won or lost us the game is not really accurate. We have to look at each player's performance. And I think Zach played very well against Buffalo, while Mike also played well against them. You remember when Zach lost the ball in red zone, but Sauce gave it right back to him in the same spot? Mike didn't lose the ball, but when Carter lost it, he didn't get it right back in red zone. That's team play. The biggest difference to me was the TOs in each game, not QB performance. Special teams also I thought were worse. Even though they scored 2 points, they prevented multiple FG opportunities by losing field position when Mike was able to move the ball and Josh couldn't. Also, if Zach could play the way he did in Buffalo all year, we would be in great shape now with him as a starter. Unfortunately, he followed up a step forward in Buffalo with 3 steps backwards against NE, losing the job - at least for now. I still think there is a chance he can get back to Buffalo level performances and more next year. This year though, Mike is giving the team a chance to win these games and is not causing team games, so let's ride him to play-offs and complete his evaluation in the process. I think there is a strong chance Mike will be 5-2 or 4-3 as well before the regular season is over.
Ironically, White's playing so well is what gives me hope for Zach. I agree, chances may not be great, like they aren't for any QB prospect really if he does not succeed right away, but look at Mike when he was 23-24 years of age. The guy played like total dog shit then. He was given a chance in preseason and posted like 60 passer rating, causing Cowboys to waive him even though he was their mid round draft pick. He looked even worse than Zach did at older age and without Zach's physical abilities. Even last year at 26 - the guy had the most INT worthy throws in NFL per quarter of play. Heck even this season, by all accounts training camp was bad. First two preseason games were bad. He was outplayed by Streveler by a wide margin. Yet, Mike turned it arounds starting in the last preseason game, in practices, and look at him now. playing well, and towards the bottom of the NFL in the number of INT worthy throws per time played. It's not crazy to think Zach can do something similar. Particularly since he came from small school, hasn't played a lot of tough competition in College compared to P5 QBs, and actually having similar trajectory in BYU where he it took him a few years to figure things out and become elite College player. If Mike proves a Cousins type by year end and we retain him, while Zach develops too next year into a good player, it will be a good problem to have. At worse we will get a haul for trading one of them if it does happen. I am rooting hard for both of these guys.
He’s atrocious in the red. With Zach, he was forced to get creative because he just wasn’t a good QB. I don’t think MLF has to get creative with Mike White. The brief red zone trip against Buffalo was fine. He decided to run the ball down Buffalo’s throat in the red and got rewarded with 7 points.
Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino (all in their prime) and Zach Wilson line up for a footrace, who wins?
Race starts at the 20 yard line. Wilson runs backwards to the 40 because he's not too bright. Armed with that head start Brady and Manning take an early lead. Marino starts bitching at his offensive line (there is none). Brady starts to take the lead from Manning when at the 2 yard line Zach Wilson catches up and crosses the goal line first. But then there is a flag thrown from an official, unsportsmanlike conduct on Wilson and Manning, Brady is declared the winner...
Right. If somehow Mike White can become the Jets franchise QB, then all of this experience would be great. I am not sure he will even be on the roster next year though. That is why I said that. It is an interesting situation.
White will be back next year. Whether he shows us he's "the answer" or not these last 4 games it would still be a mistake to let him go. Every team needs a quality option at QB even if its at backup I wouldn't be surprised if Wilson is not here next year. I could see a trade request incoming after the season
Yeah, that could happen. Especially after the crazy month the Jets and Wilson just had. Seems likely he will be here in 2023 though. White to me seems less likely, as he will be a free agent. Never know if some other team will overpay him. On the other hand, the Jets could have their 2023 QB room on the roster right now with White and Wilson too. Or both could be gone. The QB position is truly up in the air right now.
I'm of the opinion that during the off-season MW needs to bulk up a bit and train hard on throwing while rolling out. Do you concur?
Or more mobile than MW has shown himself to be. Is he not capable of being more mobile? I know he's not especially fast, but he needs to show this dimension especially with the OL they have.
Michael Nania's review of Mike in Buffalo: https://jetsxfactor.com/2022/12/15/ny-jets-grading-every-mike-white-throw-bills/ As usual very insightful. As some already noted, he needs to start faster. Overall though, this confirmed what I observed as well: not perfect, but another good game by Mike.
Interesting interview by MILF today. Someone asked a question similar to this, where guys like Eli or Jimmy G found ways not to get hit that hard by changing body positioning, etc. I also saw Kirk Cousins, who is a statue too, move a little bit to get a first down against us. Basically MILF said that it can be taught but cannot be done overnight. This is the part where his lack of actual game experience is showing up. There are no hits in practice, like the ones he took in games. This is definitely something Mike can work on in the offseason - there is plenty of motivation now to do it after absorbing all this punishment with more to come.
I think what happens over the next four games will tell us a lot about which direction we go. For sure Flacco is gone. I think Mike is a keeper. I have a real hard time believing a trade for Zach by JD after two years. I also think if we are not successful over the next four games or JD does not see White as the long term starter there will be a significant QB acquisition to compete in earnest. If we run the table with Mike, then the stage is set.
