This is a slight aside, but if I recall correctly (and I may not), there was a 2nd & 15 check down that happened during the first series (or, at least a very early series). Romo said something like, "If [Mike White] waits a couple seconds more he has a wide open receiver down the middle of the field." I also remember as they showed the replay - White was going to be absolutely wrecked if he held on to the ball a second more - and, at least a couple of folks said as much during the Game Thread. In fact, White does end up getting hit late anyway and, because he's a Jets QB no flag was thrown. Unfortunately, that pressure would be a bit of foreshadowing as to the big hits he took later, where he did wait (completing a beautiful pass to Elijah Moore on one, and an incomplete on the other), and unfortunately, did get wrecked.
I am not sure lighting in a bottle is fair. I thought he had 3 good games in a row. According to Saleh, he has been doing really well ever since that last preseason game, which is why he was promoted to begin with. Romo is a very successful NFL QB (4 time Pro Bowl, 9-10 year starter) and analyst, and he multiple times praised Mike throughout this game on the difficulty of the throws he made. I think Mike is a much better player than he was last year. Yesterday's game was very telling. OLine played like total shit, like against Denver. Conditions were terrible with wind, rain and light snow. We had big time injuries (like against Denver). And yet Mike I thought gave the team a chance to win. Aside from 2 points and ST got, throughout the game they played like absolute shit. We should have won the field possession game and got a couple of FG attempts in the first, because Mike actually moved the ball a bit, while they didn't. But our punter couldn't punt, and theirs seemingly did a great job with Berrios mistiming the kick return positioning, so in spite of outgaining them, we actually had much worse position. Then of course absolutely moronic concession on 7 points where everyone and their grandmother (aside from Mosely) knew they weren't snapping the ball. It didn't help that Carter fumbled the ball away in red zone, Berrios couldn't catch the ball that literally hit him in the face for 1st and goal from the 2, and Flacco giving the ball away just about the only time he touched it when we were about to enter FG range, instead causing them to score 3. Once again, like in the last game, I thought White did enough to give our team a chance to win. Unfortunately we didn't take it. And this was against the team he absolutely shit the bed last time, which shows his mental toughness, which is very important for NFL QB. Now, is he the long term answer? I think the jury is still out. He does seem to get hurt a lot, though knock on wood no serious injuries so far. But he has a lot of talent. I still think he can be Kirk Cousins level for us. The evaluation continues, and I am hoping there are at least 4 games left to evaluate. So far, I would say Mike is not out of the running to be longer term QB solution, in fact he is more on track to do that than not, injuries notwithstanding.
I don't want to criticize Mike White, but I do want to criticize the fans who think he is a great QB. It is getting ridiculous some of the stuff I read. He is (1-2) this year. If Zach was not benched, chances are the Jets are (1-2) in that stretch too, at worst. The players love White though, which is cool, but I am not sure what the fans are seeing. He was tough as nails yesterday. I was proud of him. He needs to do more though. He needs to win. It feels like the Jets put him in to save their season, and instead they are in a worse spot now and likely to miss the playoffs. If so, I am not sure how it can be justified as the right decision. Still time to win and fix it though.
IMO White is a career backup because he's just to immobile and gets hurt to much. I'd like to roll with him as the starter but in 4 out of his 7 appearances he's had to come out of the game for injuries. That not a reliable starter. It is what it is. We need to bring someone in next season to be part of the competition.
White's passer rating in the two losses is 68. His completion % is 57.4% No TD's and 2 int's. White looks better while playing average. That's the difference. He did look phenomenal against Bears though.
Yeah, that is how I feel too. That is what makes him not a great back-up QB either. He comes in for your starter and instantly gets injured and you are down to your Emergency QB. We all like Mike White though. Good guy. His ability to read a defense quickly is impressive too. It's the physical stuff that is his issue. That is a good way of saying it. The players around him seem more upbeat despite his average play too. Might be his attitude.
Which is why you need to include this game also, and not just pick last two games. Here is the complete stat line: Passer rating: 86. TD: 3+1 rushing. INT: 2, no other TOs. 62% completion. 317 YPG. 7.4 YPA. These are decent stats. Two of the 3 games were in very tough playing condition, 2 of the games on the road, and 2 against play-off teams. This is nothing to scoff at. If Zach gave these numbers, I would be absolutely ecstatic. Granted Zach is 23 and Mike is 27, so I am not saying it's equivalent, but as far as QB production this year, by any objective measure, White has been a significant upgrade over Zach. Whether it is passer rating (86 vs 73), other statistical ratings I listed above, PFF rating (Zach 37 of 37, Mike 15), or the eye test, Mike gives us the best chance to win now, and he played reasonably well overall. There is also a decent chance he can improve his play with more reps under his belt.
There is very little chance Mike White can go this week. If He can't here is hoping they let Zach out of time out.
White's got a really quick release. Not the same talent level at all but his release reminds me of Warner and Marino. When he sees something the ball is there. The pass to Garrett Wilson yesterday was a perfect example. GW turns his head on the slant and just as he gets it around the ball is in his hands. That kind of chemistry will get better over time and GW is not the only receiver White has it with.
In a way, maybe he's playing heroball. There were plays he could have ducked and taken a relatively painless sack and instead he threw and took a huge hit. If he's out b/c of injury, he's no good to the team.
With sore ribs I'd give even odds that whoever our backup is gets in the game on Sunday. Our #2 QB might be the biggest decision of the week.
Buffalo punts it, Berrios ducks & hides and the ball bounces 30 more yards down to the 2. the rain/snow hitting right in the face, loud crowd and aggressive D on 3rd down. Flacco woulda fumbled, Wilson woulda ran backwards in the end zone, maybe a safety or interception. the game may have been over before it really even started. White though calmly hits Garrett Wilson across the middle for 10 yards and some breathing room. I'm inclined to agree with Saleh there. Maybe not full on PVO (positive vibes only) but I do believe he has shown clearly hes the best QB on the team
How about this one. These were the throws that a lot of posters were worried about with his arm strength. He made these far hash throws with ease yesterday. Or this one, taking another shot and delivering a beauty to EM
