Glad you responded to the nutty misinformation put out there--that video is money--really appreciate the post. Lots of us, at least me, don't go over every college game looking over QB fundamentals so an analysis like this is very valuable.

A couple major takeaways I had from it were:

    1. That when he turns his back scrambling he has to reorient himself entirely to the positioning of the receivers
    2. When he steps up in the pocket he doesn't stop where the pocket is clean but rather continues into the OL
    3. That long stride footwork prior to passing was there
    4. Double clutching was there
    5. Falling backwards unnecessarily was there

I guess our scouts figured he'd overcome all this in some kind of Favrian way where conventionality doesn't matter--unfortunately that's not happening yet.

Also amazed by the bullshit put out there by experts etc who said he had the tools. Also he's been coached up the ying-yang by professionals and yet they didn't correct this stuff yet? What TF have they been coaching him on?

My apologies. Flacco is 1-2 with 300 yards per game.

A few observations from this thread.....

    1) Zach defenders think we're the enemy somehow?

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Everyone, that roots for the Jets is very much wanting Zach to succeed. If you think we're somehow trying to sabotage what the Jets are doing? You're wrong.

    2) Zach is playing acceptably right now.

You're right. He is playing well enough for the Jets to win games. However, that doesn't tell the whole story. Here is the REAL story....

Whether you care to acknowledge it or not, NEXT SEASON is setting up to be a run for the SB. It's my belief we'll make the playoffs this season. Losing Breece and AVT really stings and I have to see how the team recovers, I do think it would behoove Joe Douglas to add another OL before the trade deadline, but I want to see how the team looks before I pronounce playoffs or bust.

But next years goal is clear REGARDLESS of how this season turns out. The Jets will be making a SB run next season. A lot of effort will be put into this upcoming draft trying to put us over the top so to speak in the front office's minds.

Now ask yourself, "Do the Jets have a shot at the big goal with Zach playing just WELL ENOUGH"? The answer to that question at least right now is NO. This is why I believe it's time for Zach to start to improve his play. The Jets need him to play well RIGHT NOW. They need him to become more of a contributing factor especially when the smashmouth football approach to winning is becoming unsustainable. Losing Breece and AVT are major losses.

If Zach starts playing better right now it:

    1) Infinitely improves the Jets chances at making the playoffs this season. The team NEEDS better QB play right now.

    2) Next seasons SB run only happens if Zach starts playing better. It's all just a shitty old pipe dream otherwise.....

The fundamental flaw in your argument is that you are making the assumption that his current level of play is the best that Zach Wilson is capable of. If that were the case, I would agree with your entire argument without hesitation.

I don't think that was said anywhere in the post.

All that was said was, " "Do the Jets have a shot at the big goal with Zach playing just WELL ENOUGH"? The answer to that question at least right now is NO."

We're all on the same page here. Zach is playing well enough for us to win games right now on the back of strong D and a good run game but there's no question about it that if we want to win a SB in the near future, Zach will have to elevate his game.

I believe that he can but he needs to go out on Sunday and prove to all of us that he can.

I am trying not to argue and just to calm down some posters and fans that don't follow the games as closely. I am convinced most of the posters we are talking about are not Jets fans.

My fear with Zach or any young QB is confidence. Zach has cleaned up a lot of his mechanical issues from last year but has one major issue and that is being able to relax and play with confidence. When he relaxes he plays at extremely high level when he doesn't his mechanics, timing and decision making all fall apart. He played at elite level 4 quarters against Miami and the 2nd half against Pitt and poorly the last 2 games.

While if things click Zach could suddenly become very good the bigger issue to me is they could get a lot lot worse. It is all mental. If he keeps struggling and his confidence keeps dropping we might seem him begin to press all the time and then see everything fall apart. This is usually the end of bad QBs. We saw this 1st half of last year with Zach but then we saw him mentally regroup and play very good the last 7 games. It is possible he can regroup mentally again and stop pressing and play with confidence all the time. The bye week would be a good time for this.

IMO Zach is at a crossroads right now where things could go really bad or really good. Developing a young QB takes time with lots of ups an downs. He is getting reps and hopefully learning everyday. We all need a bit of patience and look at long term trends rather than short term data points. Currently, he has been trending downwards for 2 games. Let's see where he is in a few games and then again at the end of the season. This is a long process. Zach will likely get at least 4 years to prove himself unless he completely falls apart. If these last 2 games are Zach's floor well then that is not too bad my immediate concern is things getting much worse. Zach is really close to both breaking out and busting out,

Look…if he was balling out at 65% completion for 250 yards and a 3-1 TD-Int ratio this thread wouldn’t exist!

personally I love the back and forth…he’s done some things well…like WINNING and not throwing picks, and he’s done some things NOT well, like missing too many passes that he should make.

he’s still young…I’m going to go back to what Bill Walsh used to say and what Mark Domenik said the other day on NFL Radio (like him or not, he’s a former GM who comes across as a pretty smart guy)…anyway the Walsh thing was that he believed you know about a QB by about 24 games…so that puts it at what like a season and a half…Walsh believed that by that time, you have a pretty good idea of what a QB will be. From a stats standpoint, that provides a decent sample size as opposed to a four game stretch or a half or a quarter.

    that makes sense to me.

for Zach, given time he’s missed due to injury, that puts him pretty much at the end of this year…and that also makes sense to me. Last year was rough with new coaches and poor talent…this year has been very different.

anyway, just so we’re all looking at the same stuff (from NFL.com)

    2021. 2022. Career
    games. 13. 4. 17
    Comp-Att. 213-383. 58-101. 271-484
    Comp %. 55.6% 57.4%. 56%
    Yards. 2,334. 693. 3,027
    Yards/Game. 180. 173. 178
    TDs. 9. 1. 10
    Int’s. 11. 2. 13
    sacks. 44. 8. 52
    QB rating. 69.7. 73.6. 70.5

Those are facts…and while the sample size is still small, especially for this year, the stats do not show a significant improvement. Basically still the same….missing games due to injury, yards per game still very low, completion rate is poor for todays NFL, not throwing for a lot of TDs…really the only positive you can point to in the stats are the lower picks.

Outside of that, it paints a pretty poor picture, and if these were indicative of who he is, I think we’d all be saying yeah we don’t have a QB. That’s pretty plain…these are bottom of the league numbers.

that being said….context matters, and he should be able to improve on these numbers, or to put it another way, if he doesn’t improve on them, then we need to be back in the QB market.

    the question really is “when”?

He gets this year no question. Realistically he also gets next year…hard to imagine giving up on such a high pick after only two years unless he REALLY sucks…like Hackenberg suck level, and I don’t think he’s that.

but yes while we are winning, and I’m sure we are ALL super happy we are winning, I think it’s pretty clear, at least to me, that we are winning on D and running game really…he’s not losing games for us (huge! And more than we can say for other QBs we’ve had), but outside of his 4th quarter in Pitt, he’s not really the reason we are winning. But he needs to continue to not lose, we need to see more 4th quarter Pitt Zach and less Denver Zach, and I do think we need to see improvement in those numbers the rest of the year to feel really good about him going into next year.

I hope he can do it…personally I’d not bet my house on it…but I do want to see him do it and let’s hope it stars this week against the fucking Patriots

Nah I just want to see Zach throw 50 times a game and 300yds, wins be damned just so we can all feel good about Zach.

I’d also like to see him take all those sacks instead of escaping them and throwing ball away so his completion % will be 60% and he won’t be a bust.

why do you think that? I’m not understanding that thought track…

for example, I am a HUGE Jets fan….been that since I started watching football in 1979. I don’t live in NY so I don’t have seasons tickets but I watch every single game on Sunday ticket and I go to a coup,e of games per year…this year I went to the GB game (amazing experience).

I am EXTREMELY happy we are winning, and still a bit shocked honestly that we are sitting at 5-2.

all that can be true, as I’m sure it’s true for many others here, and yet I can still look at Zach and say yes, glad we’re winning, keep it up, and yet also acknowledge that he’s not playing great QB play right now. In fact it’s pretty mediocre. Yes there context (some say excuses) about shitty OL play and drops by receivers and lack of talent (more so last year), but regardless, outside of a few flashes where he has shown great command and talent, he’s been pretty mediocre.

An earlier post said it well…

no one is aging bench him or cut him

no one is unhappy we are winning

no one is saying we’ve seen his ceiling and he can’t do better

all that is being said is that he needs to get better if we want to compete with the likes of Mahomes and Allen and Burrow to get to a Super Bowl, because at least for the next few years it sure looks like the road to the Super Bowl will go through probably KC and Buf

    that’s all…

doesn’t mean we aren’t fans at all

I just watched the Narnia breakdown and he was hard on Zach. Most I agree with some I do not. The first throw of the game Zach just missed it happens. The double clutch he was trying to get the ball to Mims then he threw to Conklin. The out to Wilson was not as bad a throw as he made it out to be. The miss to TJ was because of the rush (Not because of inaccuracy) but the rush was not significant enough to miss that throw. The problem is Zach can and has made that throw off balance, great that he can make it but he does not to be throwing off balance in that situation.

It was clear the rush was affecting Zach. That is a growth of a QB the line has to get better and Zach has to throw better with a not-so-clean pocket.

You would rather the Jets LOSE field position in order for Wilson's completion percentage to be higher?

There a posters that post just to rile up the people on the fence that watch the game casually. These poster tend to skew the reality and are not open to objective. They very strategically wait for a bad game then pile on with non-sense.

Zach did not have his best game against Denver but he has not played poorly overall. You get narratives like he in innacurate (He missed some throws in the Denver game but has still has over 60% completion percentage. If you look at all four games the misses he had in Denver are the outlier not the norm.

The narrative he misses short throws. He had a couple wonky short throws against Pitt but has been extremely accurate on those since then.

Take any young QB and you can rip them apart worse than Zach. Poor Fields he has been getting killed, Trevor has not been playing great but no one is talking about him, Mac Jones got benched, Picket is an interception machine, Mills has been bad.

Look at Allen, Daniel Jones, Jalen Hurst, even Tua. They are playing pretty well. Playing QB in this league is hard it takes time.

Zach is playing so much better than last season we just have not had to rely in him to win and that is a good thing.

you dont have to explain yourself. Of course you are a Jets fan. SUNY Amherst has a small, mostly disinterested fanbase so maybe he's used to that.

    Passion is sometimes critical

I'm not going to spend time digging up the posts where people say that Zach isn't the answer, there's tons of them. But by saying Zach isn't the answer, the inference is that he's as good as he's going to get.

But I will challenge you to find any posts where I said anything like this:

"Instead I believe your claim, and especially the common addendum that anyone not praising Wilson must be a Patriots fan is a bit detached from reality. Will you be claiming they are Bills fans a week from now?"

    Happy hunting.

I think they are Jets fans. I also think some don't really care and just like to bust balls and be contrarian. Those guys aren't worth the time.
