Sam Darnold is injured, you can look it up. Not sure what he has to do with this discussion or why you are bringing him into it. Also, I dont hate Zach Wilson, I wish him well in fact. Its just odd to me how people on this board will give him excuse after excuse but Denzel Mims makes a mistake and its clear he's not NFL caliber
I praised Mims this entire offseason, but this is a bit ridiculous. Last season Mims stunk. Yes it was new offense, but that was the case for everyone, including total scrubs who were ahead of him too. He didn't learn the play book and his injuries were minor. He got a chance to play and was horrible. Let's not rewrite history here. This offseason the first thing we hear is that Mims is in great shape. Had good OTAs, training camp. This is completely different than last year. It's not that he finally got an opportunity in a preseason game. It's that he worked hard offseason, came in shape, and had a really good camp - he made himself better, and it showed. It's not CS fault Mims couldn't learn playbook and stunk when given a chance last season. Sometimes it takes young guys a little longer, particularly when you have to learn another offense, and took Mims a couple of years to arrive at a point where he appears to be ready to breakout. No need to blame coaches for that and find every excuse why that wasn't the case a year earlier..
Who is saying Mims is not NFL caliber now? I think everyone acknowledged he had a good camp and has value. It is also true that his second year was awful and things didn't look good. If Zach has a sophomore season akin to what Mims had last year, I believe everyone will be just as concerned. Actually way more concerned, since investment into him was much more and he plays more critical position. Let's hope it does not come down to it though.
Zach was a rookie last season and has yet to throw a pass in year 2. Mims is in year 3. The comparison makes zero sense just like all of your posts.
Mims just sounds like a great kid. I just feel like we need to learn a little more this season to properly evaluate him. Hope that he ends up on the roster. Even as a #5 guy, I feel like there will be opportunities this year, and he will get a chance to move up the chart.
Reminder that fans swore Mims was a day 1 pick (myself included). The actual NFL talent evaluators thought he was a late second rounder. He fell for a reason. Again, maybe we don't know it all, shocking as that may be to some.
Not sure if anyone else caught the announcers talking about how Rhule had to really put a lot of time in with him as a college player. He may just take longer to develop. Coupled with health issues and COVID life he might just be taking longer than we'd expect. I'd like them to keep one more big body receiver. I probably prefer Cager for his versatility at this point but ideally they find a way to keep both. for reference:
Mims will make the 53 because we'd be stupid to cut him from a strategy standpoint. He's probably the 7th best receiver but if you have a guy that can fetch you something on the trade market once teams go through all their waiver claims, you make him the 6th best WR on paper.
One of the beat writers last week talked about how the Jets CS treated Mimms last year being too tough on him. The writer said the Jets Coaching style was a "tough love" style to be very tough on Mimms. The writer speculated that this not a style that motivates Mimms that rather Mimms needs a more supportive coaching style to get the best out of him.
To be fair, many people on this board myself included were rooting for Mims based on this years vast improvement and still want him on this team. Of course, he will be in the lower tier of the WR roster but with a chance to contribute and move up. As for Wilson, not sure why believing is too early to forecast if he can achieve his potential or not, and have a future equates to making excuses for him. And flat out declaring him a bust is not a massive over reaction. Most all rational fans here have clearly stated that they expected major improvement this year for Zach to give us some hope he can succeed. But two plays later in the first preseason game that went out the window apparently. BTW yesterday I saw a season vet like Flacco pull a complete boner rookie mistake, resulting in a pick six. If it was Wilson instead this board would have lit up and would have been crucified by the same fans. In my eyes expecting improvement after his rookie season is more reasonable that declaring him a bust already, and suggest to move elsewhere, as a few here have consistently declared for Wilson, and Mims for that matter. And funny enough, most the same folks seem to also be ready to part ways with JD, and the CS as well, so we can once again loose whatever stability and cohesiveness we have brought to the organization over the past two years and start a new shit show all over again.. Unfortunately, with a good portion of the Jet fan base, giving the team adequate chance to execute a long term plan, along with some patience and hope died a long, long time ago. And nothing but instant success will be good in their eyes.
really then what was it? They played him only because they need to heighten his value IF they are stupid enough to trade him.
you wonder if Joe D just says to the staff 'no I'm not trading or cutting him. I got you a talented receiver, its your job to make it work'
So you're implying Mims chose to have a great game? Which means he chose to drop passes and commit penalties for two straight years?
It was a former 2nd round pick having a good final preseason game against 3rd and 4th stringers, like a 2nd pick should do.
Except Mims IS a "3rd or 4th stringer" himself based on the staff's depth chart. Draft status means nothing anymore. A correct assessment would be "in the 2nd half where everyone playing was backups, the best player on the field was Denzel Mims, who has spoken out that he believes he shouldn't be a backup player."
So by this airtight logic, any player that says he should be a starter then outperforms third stringers in the second half of the last preseason game is indeed right and should be named a starter.
That's your retarded take. Please dont put words in my mouth. I was discussing Denzel Mims only... because its the Denzel Mims thread
