Appreciate your opinion. While Hardee did lead jets special teams in tackles last year. he also did lead the jets special teams in penalties last season (5) and in missed tackles (5). Pro Football Focus ranked him the 105th best special teamer in the NFL last season. At $2M per, that a high price tag. The jets may keep him, but I don't think he is worth the money, if he's not playing any CB.
This comparison makes no sense. Herbert was a first round pick who played very well in a real game. Streveler is a camp arm who played well (can't even say very well with that interception) in the preseason against third stringers.
Remember the Browns QB jersey? The Jets should make one for every hyped backup: Clemens, McElroy, Simms, Petty, White, and now Streveler.
I agree that Hardee is valuable but I think given how many quality players are on the bubble his value becomes less. Add in the Jets are pretty tight on cap space and they can save a few million by cutting him. There is a possibility Hardee could be gone. I would much rather have Hardee than Mike White or Cager on the roster as he will likely contribute more. But is Hardee worth keeping over Smart, Shepherd, Anae, Curry, Mimms or Dunn? Cutting Hardee is an option as is cutting Guidry and using Echols as the backup nickel corner. I can't wait to see how they handle the last few roster spots?
I think Mims should have knocked that down or even caught it so ya, he threw it up there but it was ok. Lynn saw a positive performance and diminished it "he's a back-up for a reason" he said. FWIW if it even matters in this context, Streveler won a gray cup in Canada. Other NFL QB's have played up there so while he's not a #1 draft pick, he has had some success. I and others are not saying he's a lock--rather his body of work thus far puts him in the conversation for being kept over White.
You might be right about Saleh being more "sizzle" than "steak". Like with Zach, I'm wiling to give him this year to show he's the answer. I'm still confident he will show that. But the penalties are concerning, even in a P.S. game. ALL the players, regardless of where they are on the depth chart need to be held to the same standards of execution, and for those not on the first team this is probably even more true - they can't afford to make mistakes or make their mark by being the guy who committed a key penalty (or more). But overall, penalties probably kill more drives - or allow the other team's drives to continue - than any other factor. If I were a HC I would be ruthless about eliminating these, even if you can't do so 100%. I would pull guys from the game and let them sit on the bench for a few plays, a quarter, or even the rest of the game depending on the severity of the penalty and whether they're a "repeat offender". I sure hope Saleh gets a handle on this.
Just some things after watching 1. Wesco is toast and Cager deserves a spot 2. Mike white is on the bubble needs to perform better next game 3. The DL is deep and some guys might not make it that I want 4. We gotta do better in the secondary, and don’t think Joyner looked good. Not sure why Pinnock hasn’t gotten a better look when he plays he’s always around the ball 5. Ashytn Davis is toast just like Wesco 6. Greg Z is slightly ahead in the kicker battle 7. Hate the slow starts and penalties that falls on the HC, starting to wonder if Saleh is learning anything or will be the guy! He’s acting too much like a friend and buddy buddy instead of coaching 8. JD is gonna have some tough tough cuts
You don't throw a jump ball into double coverage to Denzel Mims. And I'm aware what Lynn did. But Herbert and Streveler have nothing in common, so it doesn't matter what Lynn said. Anyway, if Flacco doesn't need the reps, start Streveler against the Giants. And if he lights it up, keep him over White. But neither one is likely to be much of anything going forward.
I especially like your point #7 about Saleh acting too much like the players buddy first, and coach second. The Packer players hated Coach Lombardi, but there is a reason the Super Bowl trophy is named after him.
Lombardi had a bit of a sadistic streak. https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...-i-green-bay-packers-vince-lombardi/79756542/
LOL! What? Yes, the jets punted a lot. I didn't say Hardee led the LEAGUE in special team penalties...I said he led the jets TEAM. Presumably, 10 other guys covered kickoffs and punts WITH Hardee, but for the team Hardee drew the most flags on special teams. The other guys on the special team covered the same number of punts and kickoffs. Anyway, your claim that Hardee "will not be cut," may be true, I don't know, and isn't really that big of a deal. I guess I never thought a $2M special teamer on a 4-13 team was as valuable as you. Feel free to respond if you want...you can have the last word.
I don't think a 4-13 team can afford to turn its nose up at solidifying any position, even ST gunner. After seeing Hardee play last season though, I'm not sure that's what we did.
Hardee is useless on the roster. Too expensive for a gunner, a position that you can teach anyone to do these days. If he could play corner, it might be a different story but he can’t. it’s better for this team if you taught a guy like Michael Carter II, who can play corner and will be on the team, how to be a gunner, saving the roster spot and money
IMO - Am very skeptical of Perine. For me - 1 good game doesnt really light up the past 2 yrs. Even in minimal playing time, he always seems to get hurt. How can he make it healthy over 18 weeks? Prefer Ty Johnson. - Jacob Martin was a bad FA pickup. Way overpaid & is now taking up a roster spot that could go to the aforementioned Jonathan Marshall. For those who forget, - NYJ was just absolutely RUN ON for the entire 2021 season.
I liked the outcome of the game but I do NOT think the Jets are ready for the regular season. The starting offense and defense just hasn't played together enough. And honestly, besides in practice who the hell knows about Flacco? What starters they did have playing against the Falcons were basically sleep walking. The OL got manhandled. The defense got pushed around in the running game and has no idea how to play zone. The Eagles and Falcons just ran out, sat down in the middle of the zone and there's zero reaction by the defense. In all honesty it looked like the players had no idea what they were supposed to do? I think the team looks like shit right now and if this keeps up and the Jets are like 0-6 to start the season? Then you've got to start to think about Saleh and Ulbricht and their value.
I think the jets zone defense in the first half of the Falcons game is the worst I've seen. I hope Saleh is not afraid to fire his D coordinator the way Bowles was.
