At the end of the day I just love fishing. So being able to fish both freshwater and salt water gives me the most opportunities to fish. I've gone out pan fishing and had an awesome time. Truth be told I could fish for 8 hours, not catch a thing. And still have one of the best days of my life.
I put ALOT of mileage on my bmx bike from the ages of 12-14 with a fishing rod and tacklebox in hand scoping out the canals and ponds of west Broward county
.... Got a project deadline moved up a day to fish offshore with a buddy tomorrow, but he just picked up a charter.... Ocean is supposed to be FLAT tomorrow, so I'm game to run my lil boat offshore. Too bad I'm realizing I fish with dudes young enough to be my kids for a reason.... everyone I've asked to go has an excuse
I'm starting to look at boats, God help me. https://www.boattrader.com/boat/2022-grady-white-251-coastal-explorer-8385896/
I somehow missed this reply. Thanks for providing all that info! I'm not sure if that type of fishing is right for me but it's good to have a general idea of how it works. Thanks again, Cman!
Anytime Bick. Be advised though that if you should find yourself down in FL or off the Carolina coast deep dropping, you'll be instantly hooked on it. Same technique as plain old bottom fishing just larger in scale and so are the fish. BTW, if you want a small taste of what deep dropping is about, try to fish off Stellwagon Bank in Gloucester. Depth is 200-400ft and you'll get a feel for it. A 15-30lb Cod from 300ft down will provide a nice challenge. Tuna is in another weight class altogether. You're gonna need a good sized boat just to be on the safe side to get out that far. As always, be safe!
Great day! Won the Pool $$ with a 5lb fluke. Couldn't ask for better weather!! Should have been a better day but the Capt had to figure out what to do.. We spent the better part of the day anchored up and getting really small fish. Things picked up once Capt. BeachRunner realized we had to go out further and drift. Once he did that, it was game on for the last several hours of the trip. Hit the money fish on the last drift!
Do you have a good vacuum sealer? If not, make the investment as it will pay dividends when you're storing your cleaned catch at the end of the day.
Good to know Tell me about the fishing, specifically the fluke. How deep was the water? What kind of rig were you using? Were may fluke caught or was that an outlier? Where were you fishing?
It will test your rig and your technique D.. What happens is instinctively, they flatten out their bodies so you're cranking against both the weight of the fish AND the weight of the sea water at a particular depth. Kinda like sticking your hand outside of a moving car. Flat? the air goes around it.. UP? the air impacts it head on..Head shakes and dives will let you know how good your knots are too. The real fighter was the Porgy I have in my left hand..
Fluke are know as very good fighters for the reasons Cman mentioned. I fish for fluke in a pretty light setup so I would imagine a 5+ pound fluke would we a blast.
Well, the Fluke hit on the drift, not when we anchored up. In fact, our best action of the day was when the boat was moving. Depth was really shallow early on (25-40ft) just off the Atlantic Highlands beach but when we went out further 5-10miles, things picked up markedly. I would estimate 80-120ft. depths as I was able to hold bottom with a 6oz sinker no problem. I was using a basic hi/lo rig with 3/0 offset Gamakatsu circle hooks on 12" leaders and white glow beads on each leader. 20lb test braided main line rounds out the rig I was using.. Depending on the time of year, the glow color changes. Spring=Green.. Summer= Pink or Green. Later Summer-end of the year=White glow beads. I wasn't targeting Fluke but sometimes you just get lucky. Big Fluke are being caught regularly right now so you might want to consider targeting them between now until after Labor Day. Remember that vid I posted about how color changes with depth in Saltwater? Between now and Thanksgiving? Hit em hard man. This is our time of year as the fish already know the days are shorter and the winter migration south is right around the corner. That's my plan. I have a Block Is. trip planned for 11/21. That will be my last trip of the year. Water tops out at 100ft so I'll be bringing light tackle and jigs.
Fished a bunch this week.... super nice gulfstream water moved in and fishings been on fire. Inshore, nearshore, Nearshore off my kayak, and ran my lil boat offshore yesterday (whacked the kingfish (mackerel), including one around the 35-40lb mark... will post pics when I can. I'm tired and sore....but Looks like I'm headed to NY tommorrow. Sure I'll do some inshore fishing, and Hopefully have a chance to get on some tuna! (and see the Mets)
