Severance on Apple TV+ was good. Maybe a little slow in the middle but the season ended with a bang. If you like slightly dystopian near-future stuff you'll probably like it.
I'm watching the 5 part miniseries Chernobyl on HBO Max. The first two parts were excellent. It's a little weird listening to the actors portraying Russian speak with a British/Norwegian accent, but you eventually get used to it.
I'm wondering if the one new character is setting up for a spin off. I liked the ending better than I usually do for shows I've been watching a while.
I was a freshman in college when this happened. I didn't realize the extent of the event. At the time I figured Russia. F them. It's very eye-opening to see the whole story of what actually happened.
I liked it although even for a short series it was a bit boring. They’ve done a good job advertising it to draw intrigue. I will probably give it a watch. After resisting the bullshit that Disney puts on, I have finally caved ands am watching the Mandalorian/Obi-wan. Both a little bit hokey but easy watches. Under the Banner of Heaven was very good on FX.
Three episodes in and 'The Old Man' series has me by the nuts. The FBI & deep state shit is a bit heavy handed I think. The flashbacks could be better integrated. The imaginary shit when he got pulled over by the local cops threw me for a loop.
It’s over the top and shit but I’m all for it. It’s based off a dad book and similar to like “Reacher,” things get ridiculous. But though I like “Reacher,” this is on another more sophisticated level. The monologues really stick with me and the acting is like a veteran masterclass (Bridges, Lithgow, Brenneman). Where else can you watch philosophical musings over scrambled eggs?! Love this.
I get that they’re setting everything up as best as they can but they’re stretching the monologues a bit too much. I’m hoping we see five episodes like this to build the characters and five of a heavier story pace. There’s a great place for long drawn out monologues but it can’t be every scene on a rotating basis. The flashbacks monologues in particular are what hurts the pace in my eyes. Otherwise I think it’s setting up to be a fantastic series. I’m generally a critic early on in series so take my criticism with a grain of salt.
It's way better than the Reacher series... though I enjoyed that for what it was. This one is more sophisticated as you said... and way better production value. Never read either books... so no base of reference as to original material. I like the way they set up the surprises... ie his daughter and the history between Bridges & Lithgow's characters. Doesn't that sneaky FBI agent have to die? lol
lol that dude is mad annoying agreed about the surprises. And I like that they don’t linger or wait till the season finale for the reveals. Each episode offers something new and it keeps moving.
lol true about the monologues. It reminds me of “Midnight Mass” (Mike Flanagan), on Netflix. Also has the drawn out monologues. They can get tiresome but I’m cool with it. But that can only work if you have the actors for it.
Midnight Mass just never went anywhere. When series spend entire seasons trying to create Emmy winning performances for two actors in the series, they kamikaze themselves. Take a couple episodes to develop the characters and then dive right in. Breaking Bad changed the game because the entire first season is one of the most boring in television history of any series that ever succeeded and then they proceeded to absolutely murder seasons 2-4 and then finish it up solidly with season 5. A lot of series are banking on something similar but with all of the streaming competition now, too many series get the quick hook. Counterpart and Messiah are good examples of series that got cancelled way too quickly.
