https://nypost.com/2022/05/23/mike-westhoff-pulls-no-punches-about-key-jets-in-new-book/.. Not a good read for those wanting to forget the past although Mike didn't fry everybody and had some kind words for a precious few. For the rest of us, we saw this happen in real time.. We miss you Mike..
I would like to hear his written thoughts more on Mangini. Westoff did a podcast about 1.5 years ago where he pretty much called out Mangini for being unstable. He said that Mangini when he went to Cleveland mentally went over a cliff because he had no older role models to talk him down from his bad decisions. Which we can see from the reports in Cleveland where the other coaches were not allowed to talk with Colt McCoy and McCoy got his playbook a day later than the other QBs. Westoff said in NY Mangini would often want to do crazy things but he was able to talk him down. He attributed it to Mangini's youth. I like Westoffs candor and openness in criticizing Mangini and Sanchez but I also noticed his criticism often seems a bit self serving. I also really hate the idea of someone talking publicly bad about teammates and fellow coaches. True or not what does this say about Westoff's character when he will throw others under the bus? Maybe he felt everyone knows Mangini was unbalanced and Sanchez was beyond awful but I still think one should nor rat out their brothers. That being said I look forward to reading his book. I am sure most have read Collision Low Crossovers about the 2012 team. I am hoping this will be just as good.
Much as I thought his coaching was great... I don't think he was equipped to navigate the politics of being a head coach.
Yeah maybe... I wonder why he didn't get the job after Herm. He was listed as Assistant Head Coach under Herm for his last two years as head coach. They went with Mangini instead. The Jets front office was a joke back then... I'm not convinced it's any better today.
I really liked Westhoff, he was a great ST coach. It seems like a lifetime ago but it’s easy to forget the success we had during his time here. Playoffs 6 times from 2001-2012. Lets fucking go Jets!!
There is such a thing as being too blunt. I suspect Westhoff rubbed a lot of folks at Jets HQ the wrong way. As they say, the walls have ears. Could explain why he never got to be an HC. Appears politics isn't his thing..
One of the problems with being a truth teller is that frequently the powers that be don't want to hear the truth and certainly don't want it told to anybody else. Westhoff was very good at what he did. We were lucky to have him for so many years.
Mangini was a great choice to lead the Jets in the Parcells plan decline phase. He'd have built us out into a much better team if given time. Unfortunately he had human foibles also and those came to the forefront and got him forced out. The biggest one was getting wrapped up in the Mangenious meme, which was not of his making and took a lot of the rope he had away when the Jets predictably collapsed after Favre got hurt.
Which is what I wrote earlier in this thread. There must have been a reason Westoff wasn't made head coach after Herm got the boot. Stranger still that Westoff stuck around after getting demoted back to Special Teams Coach exclusively. Maybe no other team was interested in him... maybe networking wasn't Mike's thing. Maybe he liked living in the Tri State area. Maybe the answers are in the book...
Actually truth is the most important thing when people can't agree on facts. Somewhere in here soon we're going to get hit hard in the mouth by something that is a major point of contention right now. If we can agree on the truth of that hit we're ok and if we can't we're screwed.
I blame the American education system. The GVT has been defunding education for decades and now we have a populist who can’t do research and have no concept of critical thinking. Truth is a matter of perspective while facts are verifiable. Many people assume truth and fact mean the same thing (like sex and gender) but they have subtle difference and are not the same (like sex and gender). If you think someone’s opinion is more important then verifiable facts then we’ll have to agree to disagree. http://www.differencebetween.net/miscellaneous/difference-between-fact-and-truth/
