Took 20 years of bluewater offshore fishing to get that one..... don't think I'd be able to fight that fish again if I caught it 20 years from now
Thats not fishing.... that's button pushing besides, you're not using an electric on that fish.... 160# fish on 40# mono
yeah but it's not that deep up here..... some guys use the electrics for the deep drops, but the current is ripping, and hoisting up pounds of lead to keep one tilefish isnt that appealing to me
Guys up here are fishing 20lb test braid/ 30 lb flourocarbon leaders in 500+ feet to avoid scoping. Lets you use lighter weight to stay vertical. Electrics are gaining popularity up here too. Especially as they come down in price My next Tile trip I'll be using an 300 size electric reel (77lbs drag), 20/30 line and leader and 400g jigs in around 400-600ft.
Pardon my ignorance but what kind of fish is that and is it edible? I've never caught such a creature like that in Georgia. Looks kinda like our gar fish.
Well, we're fishing the west edge of the gulf stream at that depth.... lead or nothing But gotta ask, what's the point of 77lb of drag with 30# test?
It's a chain pickerel. Same family as Northern Pike but much smaller. And they say they taste very good if you can get past the thousands of tiny bones, which most people can't.
Korean made reel. Must be a selling point. Much cheaper than the Daiwas too. Better to have it and not need it. Small electric is the same size as most SPJ reels. Great reviews so far. BTW: Got a AVET SXJ G2 2spd. with a power handle. Nice little SPJ reel.
I'm looking for a striper rod and reel. All my stuff is freshwater. Any thoughts on the Penn Slammer IV reel? And what would be a good rod to match it with?
Nice size reel. I always did like the 4000 size. Big enough and small enough. You're fishing LIS or the Hudson?
If you're fishing inshore, go with the 3500... 4500 for targeting bigger ones. Id go into a tackle shop and hold it in your hand to feel the weight difference Star Stellar Lite, one of the best "bang-for-buck" spinning rods..... just picked up another one a couple of weeks ago (3rd one, 1st 2 were smaller for my 2500 inshore reels) St. Croix "Triumph" too (I have 2 of these) If you go Penn, those Battalions are a good value (I have a 9' I use as a surf rod for lures / plugs)
I have a bunch of St. Croix bass rods that I'm very happy with. I think I'll give the Triumph series a try. For inshore striper fishing, which one of these would be best?
Prob the 7' MH, but need to see the line ratings.... for stripers, I'd say it needs to handle 20#, unless its a rod for inshore schoolies. I don't like rods under 7' personally, unless it's for heavier tackle offshore.
