The top half of the 1st round is supposed to be remarkably weak but this draft is supposed to have depth and a strong round 2 and 3. Here is a hughes tweet which seems typical of what I have read about this draft.. This attitude might explain why the Eagles took such little value in comparison to what they gave up in their trade with the Saints. I am curious to see what kind of value teams get for trades into the top 10. Will they take a beating like the Eagles did?
Riley was our SS in that game; we already signed Whitehead to be our starting SS. Anyone sleeping on Pinnock to be our FS wasn’t paying attention last year. I think it’s odd that people call upgrading our secondary a “luxury” but no one is calling an upgrade to our WR room a “luxury”. We’re supposed to be a run 1st team with a shaky RB room.
Pinnock had 3 really good games last year and he might be groomed to take over as FS but likely not until 2023. But, this year the FS job looks to be Joyner's. The CS really likes Joyner. He has been really good in the past as a FS, he had a great camp last year, is alleged to be a high character team leader and the FO spent 4.5 million on him to start this year. Plus Joyners strength playing FS compliments Whiteheads skill set very well. The question is who will be the 4th safety this year? Will they keep Davis and give him one more year or draft a developmental safety who can sit and learn behind Joyner?
Yeah, I wonder if they will give Davis one more year or if they will draft someone to compete with Davis for a roster spot. My gut said they will bring in competition for the 4th spot and Davis will be gone.
I want to add that I posted in error above. Joyners contract is 2.1 million. I read a tweet a few weeks ago that it was 4.5 but spotrac updated and it is only 2.1.
In Connor Hughes' last podcast, he claimed the Jets still have optimism for him and feel the missed TC last year had an impact so he'll at least get a chance to compete.
seeing how you start the post by stating Pinnock will likely spend a year developing behind Joyner, I don’t see us drafting another S to do the same thing.
I have no idea. I have been wrong much more than normal all off season. I did not expect JD to spend like he did despite all the Hughes tweets and I certainly did not expect him to borrow 50+ million from future cap years. That spending gives the Jets great draft flexibility with only 3 immediate needs in WR, edge and DT. After that they can take any player they fall in love with. They could go with Joyner, Pinnock at FS or if they fall in love with Cine, Hill, Brisker or whomever they could go that route. This is a really fluid off season and this draft seems pretty wide open. I think we should be prepared to be wrong a lot this draft and just enjoy it.
I didn’t realize you’d been wrong often this off season. While I got the names wrong, I guessed 2 TEs, Berrios and an OG would be our 4 biggest signings this off season. I didn’t call the S or CB signings but I’m not surprised by either. Before we signed Whitehead I was all about drafting a S in the 2nd but with that signing I think at S we have both starters this year and developmental pieces for the future. Seeing how we went into last season with only 2 S on the roster, I don’t see us spending draft capital on another S just to get 4 on the roster.
