A friend of mine just bought a new house, and has to deal with lawn care for the first time.

They were asking me about robot lawn mowers. I'm old school, with a traditional gas-powered Snapper. No one in my neighborhood has one.

I did a quick Google, and prices seem to be all over the place.

They seem like a good idea, if they actually work.

    I remain skeptical.

Do any of the cognoscenti here have any experience or opinions about them?

Looked at them but they would just end up as expensive dog toys in my yard. I would go with husquavana if I had to get one. Trust the name.

    Thanks!

I've seen that name in several places.

I don’t have any experience with the lawn mower version but I feel like a lot of this technology just isn’t really there yet.

Granted, we bought one of the cheaper versions but we have one of the robo vacuums and it just doesn’t replace a traditional vacuum cleaner. I can’t imagine the lawn bots are much better since it’s generally using similar chipsets.

Those mowers are great. You wind up with bald squirrels all over the place.

Outfit them with the stun attachment and you can finally keep the neighbor's cat off your lawn permanently.

Thinking maybe we could crowd source a cheap horror flick around robotic mowers gone wild.

We could do away with 90% of the CGI by just taking a few of the mowers and painting shark lips and the like on them. Maybe put like a wild frizzy orange afro netting over one of them.

Then we remote control them as they chase a group of teenagers down and eat them. Maybe a little CGI there unless we got really creative with the running over segments. Anybody got a few loose teenagers their parents wouldn't miss? We might even get away with twenty-somethings if the makeup department was good.

We could call it MOW! or Lawn Sharks or something like that.

All we need is a poster to get funding. We could sell it as a fundraiser for Aphasia Awareness. That would explain some of the voice-acting we'd have to add in.

I'll bet Bruce Willis does a mean lawnmower engine impersonation.

Thanks. I also thought of the robo vacuum.

I guess like any other new thing, it's a matter of the technology maturing, and people getting used the quirks.

This is technically a mulching mower, problem with mulching mowers is the blades get dull faster because there is no lift created by blade.

additionally mulching mowers can’t cut grass that’s wet, so you have to wait for grass to dry before using it, the waiting will allow grass to get longer which will require multiple passes to cut clippings small enough so they won’t bunch up on grass.

Most grasses don’t like to be cut low, it’s stresses the grass blades and encourages quicker growth as the grass reaches for sun light to maintain the photosynthesis process.

This machine is going to be used in conjunction with regular mowers, no way this machine can maintain a lawn to the same degree a gas powered machine can.

    Just my opinion.

Do these have the robotic vacuum problem where if they pass over a pile of dog shit it is all over the place in no time flat?

We could add that into the horror show script for sure.

Although that might take more CGI than my etch-a-sketch can manage.

Thanks. That's something to consider, especially for someone who isn't used to dealing with lawn.

Having to keep a regular mower around sort of defeats the purpose.

The problem with the vac's is that they have no AI for distinguishing vaccumable material from a pile of dog shit. This is changing now because puppy shit all over the rug really pisses consumers off but for a long time it was just part of the cost of doing business.

With the mowers you have a bigger problem because the height of the grass is variable, the contours of the land underneath the grass are variable and it will be much harder to distinguish between poop bombs and no poop bombs.

I get quite a few call to clean carpet where the roomba etc dragged the dog shit all around the house. It’s hilarious

For fuk sake..... tell him to just buy some cheap mower to push around the yard once a week..... if thats too stressful, he can get one of those helmets that hold beer cans with straw tubes
