Good to hear that Tomlinson's acquisition is almost universally praised by commentators. We badly needed a right guard, and Tomlinson has steadily improved over the years to the point that he made the Pro Bowl last season. He also is familiar with the zone system the Jets will run. The only question is whether he can successfully make the switch after having played left guard exclusively since he was drafted by Detroit in 2015. Some people are saying that this might be a big problem. Can anybody comment on how difficult it is to move from left to right guard? I imagine it's easier than moving from tackle to guard, but maybe just moving to the other side of the line might be more difficult for some players. In any case, it isn't as if Tomlinson has never played right guard in his life. Let's remember that Tomlinson started 52 consecutive games at right guard at Duke, beginning with his redshirt freshman year in 2011. Can't we expect that some of that old muscle memory will come back?
I'm not worried about Tomlinson making the switch. The Jets said they have no concerns, and I think I saw that Tomlinson said that he had no concerns. He's smart and a pro's pro. He will be fine.
Next time you take a dump, wipe your butt with your 'other' hand. See how 'easy' it is to make the switch. Good Luck!
I'm confused are you intimating it is hard to wipe your arse with the weak hand here or are you being sarcastic? You would be a strange guy if you can't wipe with either hand tbh
Ah, I thought people experimented with their other hand on other matters in college, either that or a sock
I’m more concerned with Tomlinson playing without elite players on either side of him than I am with him switching to right guard. It’s a change but it’s easier than flipping sides as a tackle since your pass sets aren’t as deep with your opposite foot.
It’s a bigger difference than you think Left guards are more likely to get help from the center as rotations go from right to left to protect the QBs blind side, which means the right guard is often left one on one.
Interesting discussion. I'm getting the impression that the adjustment to the switch might depend on the player. I'm with NC in that I'm impressed with reports of Tomlinson's professionalism, so I think he'll do what he needs to do to make the switch work. That he started at right guard for 52 straight games in college should speed up the process, I think. To make sure, should somebody ask him if he can wipe his butt with his left hand?
Yes, the most important question about the Jets line is whether anybody can play right tackle. By all accounts, McGovern is a competent pro center (although he doesn't measure up to the standards set by Mawae and Mangold). AVT will clearly be fine, and I think Fant has proven that he can play left tackle. What we don't know is if Fant or Becton can play right tackle.
My Uncle (right handed) blew the majority of his fingers and thumb off with a stick of dynamite while fishing for salmon on Lake Ontario (don't ask!). Anyway, he said the hardest part of his recovery was pushing what was left of his fingers thru dry rice and beans to toughen up the skin post surgery, and learning how to wipe with his left hand! But to answer your question, I've never tried to use my left hand. I probably could, but never had the reason to try. Do your own experiment. The next time your wife is out shopping and you're going to town on yourself, switch to your other hand, let us know how it comes out!
I'm 50 in a few months, I have experimented in my youth and I prefer my stronger hand, but I can wipe my arse with either hand and frequently do, depending on which side of the toilet the paper is hung, even then I feel you get a better wipe of each cheek using the opposite hand, left hand does the left buttock on the final wipe and vice versa, just to make sure you are clean and ready to go. Maybe you could try it, it really isn't very hard to do and I am far from being ambidextrous.
Sounds messy. Both paragraphs. The smartest kid in my freshman class in high school managed to blow 9 of his fingers off playing with fireworks. Yeah, I know that sounds contradictory but he had a 183 IQ.
