The problem with long wars of attrition is that for the most part the people who win in the end are different from the people who were invaded at the start. The war ends in a few months and we know who the Ukrainians are. The war end in 12 years and we have no idea. There were no Islamic Communists left in Afghanistan by the time the Russians decided to withdraw.
I like what Anonymous did the other day. They hacked vulnerable printers in Russia to send them a message they are being lied to.
The idea is to repel the invader no matter how long it takes. If the Ukrainians win, they will still be Ukrainians whether in 5 months or 5 years. The Islamic Communists were collaborators and were summarily eliminated which left the Taliban in power. Pro Russian Ukrainians will suffer the same fate. A quick war against a technologically advanced opponent isn't realistic but if you can wear him down, you can defeat him.
That's my point. The Ukrainians of today are connected to Russia if not part of it. The Ukrainians in 12 years of occupation and rebellion may well hate Russians with a killing lust.
And that's a bad thing why? After a war like this, you don't really think the Ukrainians will forgive and forget? Whatever connection there WAS, has been broken by Putin and it will take a generation before anything close to a connection will happen again.

That's why I think getting out now is the best move for Putin and the Russians. The invasion was a massive miscalculation and a brutish one at that and every minute they stay makes it worse for them.
The truly ironic thing is that somehow the Russians have made the Germans the good guys in Ukraine. Between that and the German decision to spend 2%+ of GDP on defense this has been about as big a screwup as you can imagine a Russian leader making.
You have to remember that Biden is the guy whose election certification was overrun by an armed mob. If he's not thinking about how to best defend democracy in the USA he's not doing the job we elected him to do.
