hmmm…I don’t think that’s true at all…he actually has stuck pretty well to his plan. he said he’d build through the draft and he has….he hasn’t spent big in free agency He said he values the trenches, and he’s spent a lot of resources in high draft picks and also free agent dollars on OL more so than DL but he did sign a pass rusher (who got hurt) and he had a decent DT group so he didn’t need to invest there as much as on OL the free agency moves he’s made have been younger players on the upswing so I’m not sure I agree that he’s all over the place at all if anything, I’d say that he was very strict on his plan, but going after a couple of these higher free agents shows that he’s trying to adapt and seeing the world around him realizing that our plan, while solid, is not keeping up with the rate of improvement around us. he just didn’t make it because at the core, we’re still tied down by the “well, we can’t overpay” or “we’ll, we’re still a year away from making that kind of move” type of mindset. it’s very easy to rationalize why NOT to make a move. And like I’ve said in other posts, I get that individually those arguments make sense (I.e. is Cooper REALLY worth $20m?, or Players like Khalil Mack or Chandler Jones are too old for us)… I’m just bummed out that there were SO many moves of REALLY good productive players in the areas we need, and even though we had top three cap space and a lot of picks, somehow we didn’t come away with any of them. But if anything, I think JD has stuck to his plan maybe even too much. Build through the draft. Build the trenches. I don’t think he’s been all over the place at all
Well what exactly do you expect the guy to say? "we played the Jets like a well-tuned piano and then we took their offer to the Fins and got what we wanted."
People need to accept what happened, let this shit go and move on.. All this whining is starting to sound weak and childish. Hill is in Miami. The Jets took their best shot and came up short. Oh well... Fck it. Time to move on already..
I didn't read all of your post but right away you have an example thats incorrect. Douglas has spent big in free agency and he traded up for a guard last year, tossing away draft picks. This week he was prepared to toss away more picks in a trade for Hill.
They were brought in first to facilitate a real offer from the Fins. No way in hell Hill was coming here unless he had no other choice. It was Leveon Bell incarnate.
I recall that year I was hoping we could get guys like Trei Turner, but JD I think thought Clark and Lewis would cover. He was able to rebound nicely with LDT and now we got Pro Bowler at the spot, and I hope will still get LDT for depth, but I was really worried for Zach getting seriously hurt there first few games. WR position though is taking a lot longer to address. This brings me back when JD picked Perriman over Anderson to save on cost to be WR1. Perriman stunk while Anderson had 1100 yards. Anderson had a poor year this year, but still had more yards than any Jets receiver on the roster and could have certainly benefitted Zach with his speed. JD to his credit did admit he misjudged the market. Last year JD did spend some on Davis and drafted a promising WR in Moore, but Davis underwhelmed then got hurt and Moore was injured a lot. The bottom line though for the second year of his leadership in a row our QB had shit for WR most of the year. Zach had guys like Smiths, Montgomery, Black, Mims, who busted, etc... Berrios, normally a #4/5, was his top WR and even he got hurt at the end. Turned out didn't matter for Sam, since he sucks anyway, but it wasn't ideal to find out is Zach is our guy. It was really bad second half of the year. Now we are in a 3d year of unsolved WR problem. When Cooper came up for only a 5th round pick, I honestly think JD misjudged the WR market again. 20 mil is no chump change. But followed was basically a run on WR, and in general (not just WR) top guys got paid, then restructured for team friendly deals with large sign in bonuses and CAP spread in small chunks, and can be later restructured again. Given what he then tried to give up for Hill, who is better, but still 30 mil with 4 years guaranteed is WAY higher than 20 mil with 1 year guaranteed, followed by team options each year. Cooper's by the way was restructured to count only 5 mil. JD just made a mistake in IMO. IMO it would be much better for Zach to have someone like Cooper and say Garrett Wilson than Wilson and someone else in the draft, but if JD hits in the draft, there is a chance WR will be solved.
The problem with what Douglas has done since he got here is that none of the joins have been well thought out. He sold the Jets existing talent high and well. The Adams deal was the highpoint of his tenure so far. Then he brought in hole-filler after hole-filler, signing players of limited duration to go alongside the older stars that he could not sell due to compensation vs performance issues. This was the exact opposite of what you want when you are selling your young stars, even at a good (great) exchange rate. His first real draft in 2020 brought in guys that fit Adam Gase's offense which is understandable. However when he chose his next HC he picked a guy who was going to run an offense on a completely different tangent. Who were the guys in the new CS's doghouse from the get-go? The guys Douglas drafted for Gase the year before. They didn't fit the system the new CS wants to run. His second draft he picked a strong-armed QB high in the draft, apparently with the CS salivating all over him but it took exactly 5 games for the words "the simple stuff" to show up in a post-game presser. Anybody can see that the QB and the offense the Jets want to run are a mismatch. 5th round picks of no great renown make the offense look coherent. 10 year journeymen who have never started in the NFL come in and make the offense look coherent. 35 year old vets who make Frankenstein look like Gumby by comparison make the offense look coherent. The rookie? Makes the offense look terrible. So now here we are in 2022 and the Jet's CS has to somehow fit a round peg into a square hole or everybody is going to get axed. What is the solution? Sign a couple of journeymen TE's. Now if they were doing this with the idea of running dual-TE's a lot of the time and using them in a power running set the move might be a good one. But if they're just planning to run a bigger spread when the two TE's are in, well Zach isn't going to do much better with that than he did with the spreads the Jets tried to run last season. So once again a mismatch. If the Jets were really thinking outside the box they'd draft an OT on the 4 and play Fant outside Becton as one of the TE's. That would give them their power running formation with 6 OL on the field and it would help Becton to his left where he has had some problems and Fant actually caught some passes out of that formation with the Seahawks.
I don’t know what’s more surprising. Someone suggesting the Jets use a top five pick on a tackle and move one of their current tackles who is making $10 million to tight end or the fact that someone completely agreed.
We're 6-27 under Douglas, and oddsmakers continue to have us as one of the worst teams in the NFL. So if I were you, I wouldn't choose to die on this hill by insulting people who are much more likely to end up being right than you are.
I like it. Straight ahead, power run game and cut the number of passes Wilson needs to throw in half. Instead of throwing 30 times with Wilson putting 20 of them in the dirt and punting all the time, you run the ball, play D and he only throws 15 times a game. With the defense biting on the run game, a couple of them are deep shots and the Jets win games of the 17-14 variety
Wilson would really benefit from a strong run game on the edges. You put Fant outside Becton and the Jets effectively have two strong sides to run at, the normal strong right with RT and TE and the left with Becton and Fant. The two years that the Seahawks used Fant in this way they finished 2nd and 3rd in the NFL in rushing and that's *exactly* what Zach Wilson needs next year if he is going to have a chance to turn things around.
I think the potential benefits are even more extreme, in that doing this would force the defense to play 8 men in the box and would open up the deep sidelines off of play action on a regular basis. Deep sidelines is where Zach Wilson is a plus. He completed two passes last year to the deep left sideline. He should be completing two passes a game there.
this would be a terrible allocation of resources fant was an UDFA and they only used him as a sixth lineman about 20% of the time in those years ... paying him $10 mill to reprise that role makes no sense
It's not a terrible allocation of resources if it saves Zach Wilson. With two OT's on 1st round rookie contracts the Jets actually have the cap space to do this easily. If one of the tackles goes down Fant is the swing guy and then the Jets are back to double-TE with their free agents. In the years that the Seahawks had Fant and used him this way they were up at the top of the NFL in rushing. In the year they had him and did not they were middle of the pack. In the year he was injured, middle of the pack. Before you say "that was Chris Carson" remember that Carson dropped off dramatically when Fant left town in 2020 and stayed down in 2021.
That's fine but I was just responding to the claim that we didn't pursue Cooper because it would've "violated JD's principles". We know it wouldn't have given how much we know he offered Hill. You can't claim a guy isn't violating his principles offering one WR $30 million per year but would be violating his principles offering a similar caliber receiver $20 million per year. It's mental gymnastics to defend JD at all cost. The same guy claims that anyone who doesn't glowingly support every single JD move "simply hates JD". It's comical.
I never brought up off-base comparison to last March, someone else did, maybe you misread it somewhere. My only point was to improve upon what Zach had last year, when he was throwing to scrubs and the preference would have been some good FA/trade, like Cooper, plus a good rookie WR, because it takes a bit of time for rookie to develop. At this point 2 WRs with premium picks is a no brainer, ideally with someone who is more pro ready, so he can hit the ground running faster, like Garrett Wilson at #10. With the Jets coaching Sr Bowl, I am hoping in the second round or even 3d (we have a high pick there) JD can snatch a steal.
