I think it would take something extraordinary for us to go 2-15 this year, and it's difficult to imagine something that extraordinary that would also be JD's fault. If the bus crashes on the way to a game and injures all of our starters for the season, not sure I would blame JD for that.
Even I see more than 2 wins this year as I've stated 5 wins should be the floor, 7-8 wins the ceiling. As long as we don't resemble the '21 team, I think everybody is safe for one more season. We're three years into JD's GM tenure and its been a slow climb back to relevancy. Unfortunately, we're not there yet and won't be until the end of this season if all goes well. If the FA's signed contribute like we hope, JD is a lock on another year. If his FA's flop, questions will be raised about his talent evaluation skills.
Just wanted to add that Conor McGovern is a GOOD center. I just hate he gets lumped in like he’s not good. He’s top 10 at his position, is steady. Just because he’s not elite, I think it’s unfair that fans think he’s easily replaceable.
I disagree, Cman. It's not debatable whether Uzomah, Conklin, Tomlinson, and the others are talented players and have played at high level for their previous teams. That's fact. If they don't perform well for the Jets, that isn't on JD, but rather them and our CS. Yes, it's been a slow climb back to relevancy, but it wasn't a quick decline into irrelevancy. We were never bouncing back as quickly as the Bengals. They had a lot more talent than we did and things fell perfectly for them being able to get their QB and WRs in 3 straight years. I said when JD was hired that it was going to take time and we needed to be patient. No one likes to be patient or to have to wait, but it looks like that old adage is finally going to come true for Jets fans: Good things come to those who wait. Some of us have been waiting over 50 years, but I think we are going to be rewarded for hanging in there, and soon.
Agree, McGovern is more than serviceable. So he was good signing, just not great. He was one of the better ones for sure. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
FA signings are ideally a supplement to a core which is build from within. The elite players we crave usually never become FA's, so we have to find them in the draft. Fant, McGovern, and Williams are some good signings.
A true tear down was not needed. It's never needed in the NFL. That's just what scared or unimaginative GM's looking to buy themselves time will peddle. Build around the pieces you have, and every team has some pieces. Be competitive in the short term, while building for the long term. Look at what Parcells did here and compare that to the dreadful approach to FA (both with signings, and lack of re-signings) that JD has done. If this team is terrible again this year, it's gotta be JD's last.
I also put the Jets in the 5-6 win category. However the fact that they have blown chunks for two years in a row has to be taken into account. If you look at all the teams going into 2022 the Jets are one of the teams most likely to blow chunks next season - because they've now established a track record of blowing chunks. My best guess at this point is that the more games Zach Wilson starts next season the more likely the Jets are to blow chunks. It's possible that he can make some adjustments to do better in Lafleur's offense. It's also possible that Lafleur can make adjustments designed to give ZW a better chance to succeed. However based on what we saw last season when ZW was doing his own thing he blew chunks and the team did also. When he adjusted to doing what Lafleur wanted him to do he was pretty bad also but not turning the ball over as often. For him to really succeed with the Jets they are going to have to run an offense that emphasizes the vertical passing game and also runs the ball a lot to draw defenders up into the box and opens up routes downfield. I just don't see the Jets making that bow to practicality at this point. They are more likely to look for incremental improvement in the offense they want to run and then have trouble quantifying that improvement over time. If ZW completes 58% of his passes next year for 6.3 yards per attempt with 18 TD's and 12 Int's is that actual improvement that will mean anything to the Jets of two years up? It didn't mean much for Mark Sanchez, even though he incrementally improved in 2011 also. He just wasn't good enough and no amount of incremental improvement was going to save him when the talent started dropping out all around him.
CMan, I'm also thinking 6 wins or so. I still think it really, really comes down to if Wilson starts to look like a top-15 level quarterback. If he turns out to be a back half of the NFL quarterback, It might spell everybody's demise sooner rather than later and we will be starting all over again.
Where's Morgan Moses? He wasn't a really nice pickup at RT? Or the Doctor at RG? Those two on the right side significantly changed the OL play from C over. Our top ten ranked C wasnt a really nice pickup?
I wonder if you objectively asked offensive line experts and coaches, if McGovern would crack the top ten. Everyone is basing his “top ten” ranking off that silly number. McGovern has a higher PFF rating than Ryan Jensen, Alex Mack, Ryan Kelly, and Rodney Hudson. Does anyone really think he’s better than those guys?
I dont think so at all. The Jets were 4-13 last season, 2-15 would just mean 2 less wins. that's not extraordinary
Who would you rather have? 25 year old JuJu Smith-Schuster at ~$10 million OR 30 year old Laken Tomlinson at ~$13 million
M At least Br4ds' quips are at least thought out and bit amusing and can make some sense. Yours are unimaginative lack any football knowledge and are just straight-up troll posts. If you are going to troll can you at least try a little harder or show some football knowledge?
huh? A team finishing with 2 less wins than the year before is not extraordinary. I'll stand by that comment as it happens like every season
