For a while, I believed a TE had to be taken on day 2 or 3 after how bad the 2021 group looked. But, with the additions of Uzomah and Conklin, can we punt the position for a year or two? There's no blue chip prospect, so anybody taken would need a year or two to develop. There might be a few coming out in 2023 and 2024 including Notre Dame's Michael Mayer and Georgia's Brock Bowers. Could we ride out the two FA's we've signed and take one of those guys?
I think we have a good option now. If a guy like Ruckert drops to the 4th round and it’s a value pick then ya let’s grab him. Now we don’t need to reach for a TE at least.
This is a strong and deep TE class. One should draft to the strength of the draft, so I think it would be a mistake not to draft one. More importantly, we're going to be playing considerably more 12 alignments than last season. Injuries are part of the game. Hopefully that won't be a bridge we have to cross, but God forbid, if either Uzomah or Conklin went down with a serious injury, we'd have to abandon the 12 alignment again. MLF does not want to do that. 3 TEs are simply not enough, and neither Griffin, Wescon, nor Yeboah are good enough to make the 12 alignment work as the #2 TE. Griffin should be dumped for cap space and Wesco should just be cut, period. They can keep Yeboah as the #4 because he has potential as a WR and is willing to block, so he could improve in that area. I think the safest thing would be to take Ruckert if he's there at #69, but if not, then either Cade Otton or Jelani Woods should be taken in the 4th or maybe 5th round wherever the Jets have them rated. It is my understanding that both are more in-line, complete type TEs, whereas the others in the class are more receivers who aren't suited to play in-line.
