This is what I was talking about before:

Just magic! The guy still gets his money, but they reclassified it as bonus to save over 6 mil. Salary CAP is a joke.

I wouldn't get your hopes up unfortunately, Jeremiah is also really close with Douglas and had the Jets taking Walker at #4 when asked about it yesterday.

so essentially you are saying more then half the teams don't have a WR1. your definition doesn't make sense. davis isn't elite, he isn't top 10, he's not even top 20. but i'd say at worst he's top 30 and if you have 32 teams then that means the top 32 WRs are all WR1s just of varying degrees. you also don't need an elite WR. a well rounded group works just fine. the pats won like 6 superbowls without ever having much at WR at all

it doesn't save it, it defers it. it's like using a credit card and saying your bank account didn't go down so you got it free. it doesn't work like that. it borrows against the future for the now

Come on now, it's not total drops, but drop rate. Davis had a very high one before he got hurt, I looked at these stats. Zach had the highest drop rate of any QB last year by wide margin, and Davis was a big part of it. Some of these drops resulted in INTs. He is not a #1 guy. JD thought he could be, but he laid an egg. I am hoping for a better year, but can't depend on it.

As far as picking in later rounds, it's a big risk. Yes, Moore was #16 on Jets board, but dropped. I don't think this will happen this year, with now GB needing multiple WRs too. In the second round we might not get a guy who can contribute right away. I am not even sure Watson makes to second round. WR is a huge weakness, bigger than you make it out to be. Remember last year when Berrios was the only guy for Zach and then even he got hurt. It's going to take more than later round picks to address it. In the draft we need a polished guy who can contribute quickly AND has high potential. That's why I am thinking Ohio state guys fit the bill. And they won't last till 35.

If you keep deferring perpetually as these teams do, effectively you increase your CAP room. It's like a Ponzi scheme that never falls. Or when your contention window ends, say star QB retires, you take one year hit, tank, get a good draft pick and right back at it. They need to close this bullshit loophole. You paid the guy 9 mil - your hit should be 9 mil, no matter if you count this as a bonus, salary, or whatever else you call it.

How the hell Atlanta, who is paying Ryan 50 mil can have room for Watson? Total BS.

thats fair. but even with that he was 14th overall mind you most were Rbs and TEs but he had a lower drop rate then jamaar chase and slightly higher then deebo and you consider both of them WR1s. zach did have the highest drop rate but it's not just davis. we also had a lot of injuries and he was playing with scrub tier WRs like montgomery, black, smith and mims. he had games where berrios and cole were his top 2. injuries wrecked us. it happens.

every year we hear x player won't drop but it happens. metcalf dropped from top 10 to 64, moore dropped from top 20 to high 2nd round. it's a deep class and there will be a really good WR at 35

I know the guy is super athlete, but College production (or lack thereof) has to count for something. If Saleh signs off on it, I guess he thinks he can develop him, but I would be worried.

Just looked as mock draft compilation of top guys. Looks like 6 WRs are projected round 1. We might not even get #7 guy at 35. This free agency showed Edge and WR are premier positions. We need to strike early. I am OK to trade back a few spots, but we need to get WR sooner rather than later in the first round.

    How doesn't it make sense?

I'm saying WR1 is a bad term for what we're discussing because the way most people interpret the term is basically "star or near star WR", not "best WR on a given team". We don't have a star or near star WR right now.

I'm saying we need a star or near star WR. Davis isn't that, and neither is Moore yet. A WR1 to me (again, bad term tbh) is a game changing WR. Davis has never been that his entire career. He's a solid #2, that's his peak.

Also the Patriots are an awful example because unless we stumble upon having both the GOAT QB and GOAT coach simultaneously for 20 straight years it's unlikely we'll come close to their success without a lot of talent on our team. Oh and we'd also need that QB to take pay cuts for years on end to help the team and need to have one of the better receiving TE's in the modern era too.

Also - you're underselling the Patriots WR's. They had Randy Moss for 3 years, Edelman had 3 1,000 yard seasons with them, and Welker had 6 1,000 yard seasons with them.

If it's so easy to do wouldn't the giants have been signing more players in FA?

Having a good GM who can handle the cap can be just as important as drafting. We now seem to have a GM that may be trending towards the top half of the league in that respect so I think right now it benefits the Jets to keep the current cap system in place.

Who cares about Chase's drop rate? Nobody would care about Davis' if he averaged 18 YPR and had 13 TD's like Chase did. The point is Davis dropped a ton of balls while not making up for it otherwise.

Deebo had 1,400 receiving yards and 8 rushing TD's. Another irrelevant comparison. We can't just compare their drop rates with Davis' and not mention that they both do everything else 4X as good as Davis does.

    I usually agree with that.

I will say though that Vilma and Sundayjack (big Georgia fan here) both said Walker's lack of stats in college was due at least in part to Georgia's defense. If I recall correctly Georgia basically just wants their lineman to occupy blockers for their LB's, and their defense was also so dominant that their starters were out of the game by the 4th quarter a lot of the time.

Either way though, it's definitely not a good thing that Walker wasn't asked to rush the passer a lot. No matter the reason that was, it means he hasn't had to develop pass rushing techniques.

That fine, Tom, we don't have to agree on WR, but imo if you're trying to ensure that your 1st year QB develops, why would you settle for "serviceable" rather than give him a topflight corps of receivers? We all know that the league is QB driven and if you don't have a top QB, you aren't going to win consistently, no matter how good your D is. The D will definitely continue to be addressed in the draft, but a couple of positions can wait until next year if need be. The #1 priority imo still has to be doing everything they can to help Zach develop.

3 of the first 4 picks could definitely be used on D, but it may be only 2-2. With regards to the LB position, the Jets are supposedly happy with their LBs. That could just be a smokescreen, but I guess it could be possible as well. With the awesome job JD has done in FA, he could just go BPA, and we could wind up taking CB and Edge in the 1st round. I doin't think they'll take Hamilton, but they could if they think he's head and shoulders better than any other player at that point and think he will be a real difference maker.

There are a myriad of ways in which the Jets could handle the first two rounds. I may be wrong, but I think the players the Jets could be choosing from in those first 4 picks could be KT, Travon Walker, Jermaine Johnson, David Ojabo, Karlaftis, Boye Mafe, Ebiketie, Hamilton, Cine, Brisker, Hill, Sauce Gardner, Ekwonu, Penning, Linderbaum, Bernhard Raimann, Burks, Wilson, London, Dotson, Christian Watson, Perrion Winfrey, Devonte Wyatt, Travis Jones, Nakobe Dean, Devin Lloyd, and Chad Muma. It just depends upon whom they like best, who is the best scheme fit, what they see as their biggest need, best value, BPA, if they have any great trade down offers, etc. Jets will definitely take an Edge in the 1st or 2nd round. The great thing is that all of those players are great prospects and could help the team improve.

IMO there were several reasons why the Jets were so bad vs the run last year. One was the new scheme. Fatukasi struggled with it and he was a great run stopper before last season. Evidently he is not a good scheme fit. Rankins was awful vs the run. Both Lawson and Huff were out injured and both are pretty good at setting the Edge. Both Sherwood and Nasirildeen were out injured, and both were good vs the run in college. Jarrad Davis was not good even when he was healthy and on the field. Our secondary was also pretty awful vs the run, but as you know, we had a lot of injuries at S, and had players off the street or other teams' PSs playing safety for us, a time or two without benefit of any practice, or maybe only a couple of practices. The other component was that Ulbrich and Saleh didn't make any adjustments until about halfway through the season, then things got better.

Having Lawson, Huff, Sherwood, Nasirildeen, and maybe Joyner back will help. Both Whitehead and Reed are very good vs the run, and any of Hamilton, Cine, Brisker, and Hill I think are good vs the run, so our secondary should help a lot more vs the run. That said, we definitely need to add a DT, and I believe the Jets will draft one of Perrion Winfrey, Travis Jones, and Devonte Wyatt. I think the new Edge we draft will help vs the run, and I think Jaacob Martin will help as well, so I believe our run D will be markedly improved whether or not we add any LBs in the draft.

With regards to Moore, he isn't just a slot WR. That's where he played primarily or exclusively in college, but not last season with the Jets. They see him more as an outside WR. I'm sure he may play some in the slot this season, but look for him to primarily be on the outside. Of course, depending upon whom they draft at WR, they could move Moore back to the slot and put the new WR on the outside with Davis. If they draft Burks, he played a lot in the slot, and can line up anywhere, Moore will probably stay on the outside or rotate with Burks slot/outside.

It's going to be interesting and fun, and a great season.

As @REVISion pointed out, Chase made up any drop rate he had in other areas, but I question that Davis had a lower rate than him. According to JetsXFactor, who have some of the best analytics, Davis had 4th worst rate in NFL. "Corey Davis had a rough season in this department, dropping six passes. His 15.0% drop rate ranked fourth-worst out of 117 qualified wide receivers." Also Davis has a very low contested catch rate according to same site - 41%.

So, let's not sugar coat it: Davis was not a good player last year, and then he got hurt for half the season. Not saying he can't improve, but please let's not mention him in the same breath as Chase again. He was a disappointment last year, and needs to do better. And we also need a top WR to add to current mix, which I do not see happening if we wait until second round to draft one with 6 or more top receivers off the board.

We don't have a single WR on our roster who has ever had 1,000 yards receiving in season. Davis got close once but he's averaged 670 yards receiving per year over his 5 year career.

Even then, just having one guy who flirts with 1,000 consistently wouldn't even be good enough. I don't know how anyone could possibly argue we're fine at WR.

We also don't have a good receiving TE to make up for our lack of top tier WR.

Nice post. I don't mean to pick on Davis but he also was one of the worst in the league in separation rate against man coverage An area where Jets WRs were awful. XFactor said while at Tenn he did very well against man coverage. 2 things that changed may have made a difference. In Tenn he was not the 1 option and he played a lot out of the slot which helped him get separation. Hopefully, he has a better year and ML makes adjustments to help him. Moore could be our number one option and take some pressure off Davis.

    I went off of this
    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2021/receiving_advanced.htm
PFR keeps really good and detailed stats and has for quite some time. they have him as the 3rd highest WR behind mccloud and chase. deebo rounds out the top 4. they may not be counting RBs or TEs
still I don't disagree davis had drop issues i'm just saying drops aren't a good argument to say someone isn't good. every WR drops balls even the best ones. that was my only point. it's a weak argument.

davis had a down year but he's still a legit starter in the NFL moore I think can be a top 15 WR. i'd like to add another for sure and berrios is a really good WR4 so I wouldn't mind adding 2 for depth

the point was that drop rate really isn't a good indicator to say a WR is bad. comparing the other things makes more sense. people were saying davis was bad because he dropped balls so I pointed out 2 top 10 WRs who dropped more and almost as many. that was it
