we have 88 mil next year and can free up another 15 by cutting mosley. most of these contracts will be heavily loaded into year 2 then off the books year 3. we'll still have money to spend next year as well and the cap is going to jump quite a bit when the new deals kick in
It’s what Tannenbaum use to do, then when the bill came due it was a heavy price to pay, the difference with Joe is that he’s keeping his draft picks and drafting players that can hopefully develop and fill those roles, when Jets have to shed future contracts the cupboard won’t be bare.
Yes, I agree it is different as we will have a lot of cheap draft picks from 2021 and 2022 on the roster the next two years which will help pay the bill for this spending spree. I am really shocked that he is backloading such a large amount of money. But, he is definitely going all in this year to upgrade the roster and seems to be doing quite a good job in getting value for the money as well as significantly upgrading the roster. The problem with FA is unlike last year they need to stay healthy. It looks like they put an emphasis on signing durable players. What I have noticed as well as this year as now that JD has spent a year with the CS he really knows what they want and is targeting scheme fits a lot more precisely such as signing two TEs to run 12 personnel after ignoring the TE last off-season. I love the marriage between the CS and GM. We have not had a CS and GM working so well together in quite sometime.
IMO it makes a lot more sense for us to draft an EDGE this year than sign one. They're so expensive in FA that the relative savings of drafting one vs. signing one are huge. We're also pretty much guaranteed one of the tier 1 EDGE prospects (likely KT) at #4.
other GMs we had always seemed to fail in one of the big 3 (trades, FA, draft) JD is doing all 3 well so far. 2021 draft was great and we have lots of extra premium picks this year. in FA he's signing 2nd tier guys to resonable deals. in trades he's always getting insane value. plus he's keeping players deserving of new contracts like JFM and berrios. we have lots of flexibility with draft and cap room and he's filled most of the major holes and can draft BPAs and not out of need
Don’t know if you read the article but Saleh was quoted last week….” They did not like the amount of game time the FA they signed last year missed and they were going to focus on durable players this off-season” You are spot on with your observation, I’m actually looking forward to the draft, and getting excited for the start of the season, I really hope Wilson can move forward in his development!
Idk, I kind of have the opposite view. I feel like if everything goes well next year then our real year to possibly contend is 2023. I'd prefer to keep the cap space that year so we're able to make additional signings to put us over the top for a playoff run. I don't think the 2022 cap flexibility is all that important from a competitive standpoint considering barely making the playoffs is probably the absolute ceiling if everything goes perfectly. It does however make sense from a job security standpoint given that if we have another awful season JD might be a goner.
This has a lot to do with how this off-season is going, I also believe the 2020 draft has also played a big part, to not have any players be impact players is damaging to a team that’s rebuilding. He’s essentially playing catch-up and trying to replace players that technically should have been quality starters by now. As far as speculating about a trade, CJ Mosley could be traded, it’s not like it was not mentioned last year, even though CJ had his best year as a pro last year and Jets can’t afford to lose another quality player.
If he could trade Mosely that would be huge. Yes, I know he might've been the best player on the defense, and played hard, his contract and future contributions aren't worth it. If JD can get a decent return he should do it.
Realistically, there is no market for a player who spent the last year on IR. Fant on the other hand is a starting quality LT in the league with very low miles and a low cap hit. I could see him going for a late 1st/2nd. If we pick up Hunter, Iky and Cross are 100% in play at #4
Even if the Jets put a lot of these contracts into next year, they still have a ton of money. They have 80M in cap before cuts and Mosley + Lawson + Davis cuts saves them 40M or so. They’ll still have a ton of flexibility next year. Plus, if there’s anything this off-season has taught us, it’s that cap space really doesn’t matter at this point.
