Yes - Depth is important, and since Covid we all need depth..... At our tailgate parties! Feeney already looks to be pro bowl caliber.
The other thing that no one has really talked about with Becton is: he might really not be a good fit for the zone blocking scheme. If that's the case, that would explain a lot, and also make it more likely that they look to replace him if they can get the value.
I think this is purely a locker room culture move. Feeney sucks but he's enthusiastic, fun, and seemingly well liked.
He's athletic enough to fit the scheme though. He's a rare blend of size and mobility. The problem is he lacks the biggest ability you want from any player: availability.
What evidence do we have that Becton is especially mobile other than him running 40 yards in a straight line in shorts? That's a very different kind of mobility than the kind that's important for an OL. Lateral quickness and agility are a lot more important. The fact that Becton has always struggled with speed rushers should lead us to believe he lacks that kind of mobility. He's also significantly heavier than he was at the combine by all accounts.
DL Matt Ioannidis was just released by the Commanders ----- sign this 28yr old beast for depth. Upgrade over Shepherd. Q. Williams / Draft pick likely now / Ioannidis / Shepherd / Marshall (last year draft pick) rounding out the 5. Bye Foley & cut Rankins.
"Struggles with speed rushers" is a much different thing than "does he fit the zone blocking scheme". It's very well-documented that Becton is able to get to the second level and take out anyone in his way, that is a fact. Struggling with the rush is a different problem all together and honestly I don't think we have anywhere enough evidence that he did outside of one game. And I'm also not proclaiming Becton to be the savior. I'd personally leave Fant at LT and move Becton, but I also don't want to make things up about his fit.
Saleh and MLF may not have much patience with him, but they had better get some, because unless there is something we don't know about like not really loving football and wanting to be the best he can or being lazy and not working, I don't think JD is going to give up on him any time soon, nor should he. Becton has HOF potential. Becton is just as mobile and agile as SF's LT. If Becton doesn't fit the scheme, then imo they were totally stupid for installing a scheme that didn't fit him. When they were hired, he was the most talented player we had. That has been the problem with the Jets for much of their history...there is a regime change and the new regime changes schemes to ones that don't fit the few talented players we had, and then we had to trade them. If they're that damn dumb, then I hope they fail. I've had all the stupidity from this franchise that I can handle in one lifetime.
As I said, doubts are one thing and reasonable. Already talking about trading him is not imo. That's over the top unless there is something going on that we don't know about.
Glad Piniero is back. A smidge rich though IMO, but not a big deal. Hope they add some additional competition
