It's all about the long ball. MLB knows that's what fans want to see and consequently pay the guys who can hit HRs the most money. For most players to hit with power they have to pull the ball and that's why the shift is successful these days.

but is it though? IMO, exciting baseball = men on base/ putting the ball in play, and guys who can run. It adds variables and dynamics to the game on multiple levels. The triple is probably the most exciting play in baseball (inside the park HR is too rare of an event to really quantify)... Solo shot HRs (outside of 8/9th inning) are boring.

That's because you're a true fan of the game. However, I think most fans, i.e. those who pay to come to the ballpark including most kids, want to see a home run. After all, isn't that how the Bambino changed the game and drew in the fans?

Solid move i guess? I don't know much about him. Hopefully they add more to the pen before the season starts

Mets signed Ottavino — decent signing for our pen

He was a class ahead of my son at Berkeley-Carroll High School, Park Slope Brooklyn.

Who's going to wear #0 now?

Shocker to me - the Braves have traded for Matt Olson, presumably meaning that Freddie Freeman is gone. On to the Dodgers, I suppose.

Jake has announced that he is opting out after this season, but thinks "it would be really cool" to be a Met his entire career.

Totally not trying to turn this into a political or vaccinated thread --

Came out yesterday that NYs mandate of unvaccinated players will not be permitted to play home games. Not sure who or who isn't vaccinated for the Mets, but we didn't hit the 85% threshold last year so I'm sure there are a bunch who aren't.

This will affect the other team in NY as well. Not good.

Yeah I heard Judge and his response yesterday when listening to TMKS and he definitely isn't vaccinated. Rizzo isn't either who they just signed last night. Someone also told me Cole. You already can't have any unvaccinated players travel to Toronto for 9 games, now 81 home games? Not ideal..

Kay brought up a good point yesterday that if you are negotiating with players right now you need to ask them and find out if they are vaxed. If you already know you are missing 4 players, you can't just keep signing more players who are not vaxed. Can't build a team that way. Also heard Judge could lose service time and not hit FA next year if he doesn't play X games. Crazy stuff. I would be shocked if the mandate isn't changed though..

Conforto Market is getting smaller & smaller. I’m reading a lot Mets should bring him back but even if they got a good deal on him initially the Cohen tax would make any contract given to him to expensive!
