If Reagan ran today he would be widely seen as a demagogue in our completely polarized political system.

What the world needs today is an Eisenhower. A person that everybody respects even if they don't agree with them. A person who understands the political situation and is adept at lining people up on points of agreement to create an overall consensus. A person that is relatively bullet-proof against the continual character assassination campaigns that both parties support, trying to create a "blood in the water" atmosphere around a candidate.

Unfortunately we're a bit short on those people at this point. There are a few military people out there who would probably make outstanding Presidents for the times we live in, particularly given the requirement of active duty officers not to wear their political affiliation on their sleeve. There are maybe a few politicos who could handle the job but vanishingly few given the current polarization. There are maybe a few business leaders that could make things work. However the overall situation is pretty grim.

By default anybody who is a Democrat or Republican is likely to be ineffective at uniting the USA, even in time of war. There's too much continual warfare going on between the parties to foster any kind of national reconciliation of the type needed in wartime America. It's going to have to be somebody from outside the framework of the two party system who draws general respect from independents and the sane sides of the two parties. That person will have to build a coalition of Americans that is strong enough to prevent any significant wobbling to the pressures of the right and the left. All it takes is one wobble and both parties will be pushing the administration around like a punching bag.

One of the reasons that a military candidate is appealing is that the person will have been thoroughly vetted for their security clearances and so the character assassination campaigns will be on shaky ground from the get-go. Another way to go would be a strong leader from inside the intelligence community, for the same reason. While Ronald Reagan would be a bad candidate right now George H.W. Bush might be the perfect candidate with his background as head of the CIA and a decorated WWII vet.

What the world needs is Smedley Butler to put a jackboot upside the heads of all these commie pinkos on both sides of the pond.

I was thinking more along the lines of a McRaven or Nakasone.

Russia is about to be running out of just about everything they need to continue their so far ineffective war in Ukraine.

The question is whether China is going to join the war effort and undergo a similar sanction round as Russia is under or whether they will wisely choose to sit out and ponder their options.

The question after that is whether there is anybody in Russia with the power to take Putin down.

    I’d vote for Adam Sandler.

The only way to mount a big change in the way the left and right operate would be for a third party candidate to gain a ton of share or even win an election. And that’s not happening with the way the old time South and youthful Northeast/Western coastal voters think.

Oh and that candidate will need to be an extremely rich billionaire that has no problem dumping a couple of their own billions into the effort.

Hence why we need to stop publicly balking at things like sending them fighter jets, rescheduling weapons tests that were planned before the invasion, etc.

What are you even talking about? I support Putin? Republicans and Democrats? You realize they are all the same.

Just shut up and stop making claims about me that you have no idea about.

If you cared about women and children you would be questioning the actions of your own government as well. The United States government has a long history of committing violence against the world. Martin Luther King said it best

Is he a KGB commie too?

Middle Eastern countries are worried about what a real war would produce. It doesn't take much to turn the Middle East into a fiery cauldron of demagogues slaughtering each other.

Asian countries are worried about China and by worried I mean terrified. If international borders mean nothing, well China has a lot of places it would love to become the only country that mattered in.

The propaganda war is about to go definitively over as the Russian economy craters.

The scary thing here is that Putin's invasion of Ukraine was so poorly conceived and thought out that he has no real options left. He's kind of stuck with escalation as his only plan and once he hits a redline things are really going to go to hell for the average Russian. We'll be suffering too but Russia is going to wind up as ground zero of whatever the new status quo is and by that I mean a crater that encompasses more than just the economy.
