Maybe JD sees us one year away - because there aren't a whole lot of Amari Cooper level players out there. I am reserving my judgement on this because I want to see what JD actually does with the 20 mil he basically saved here. If he gets Robinson and Berrios for a total of 20 mil, and then uses rest of the CAP to fill other spots, like Safety, TE, Corner, etc, I think I can get onboard with this. But if we carry over free CAP again into next year, while we could have had Cooper, it would be a huge bummer. Zach really needs a great WR this year - that much I do know. Sometimes you overpay for things you really need. Don't want it to be another Robby Anderson situation, where JD bargain hunted to get Perriman instead. At this point JD almost has to get someone like Robinson. And even Robinson is coming off a much worse year than Amari.
Who knows what happens with that #10 pick, could end up being traded down a bit. I thought Burks was worth it, but after he absolutely shit the bed during combine, he is WR3/4 at best. It looks like Garrett Wilson or Drake London are top WR prospects.
Robinson is coming off a worse year because he was injured and had absolutely crap QB play with which to contend. I'd take Robinson over Cooper 100 times out of 100.
IMO if London and Wilson are the top WR prospects, then we're in trouble if we're relying on the draft. I really don't like either. I'd rather have Christian Watson, or Dotson or Alec Pierce. I will be disappointed if JD doesn't add Robinson, Chark or Cedric Wilson, but I am going to wait and see how things play out.
There is going to be a lot of competition to get Robinson. If JD pulls it off and then we also get Berrios back for a total of 20 mil, sure, I see the point there of not spending 20 mil on Cooper as we get two good players for that money at the position instead of one. But there is also a possibility we lose out on Robinson and say we keep Berrios and then get another Cole type. Then draft a WR, say like Bell/London/Wilson/Watson, who will take time to develop. This is a scenario where I feel we will greatly regret not trading a 5th rounder for Cooper.
I could be wrong of course, but I don't see any possible scenario where we would be sorry for not trading for Cooper.
