Looks like the potential sanctions, the warmer than usual weather and the uncertainty of where the tactical situation would end up have combined to make the invasion option less appealing. I'm sure other things have happened in the last 3 months that will not be to Ukraine's benefit but the prospect of a full-scale invasion seems to be waning.

I think it's way more simple. There wasn't a chance in the world that Vladimir Putin would have initiated a military invasion during the Olympic games. Never. As in - absolutely not ever. But, we've turned the guy into this mythical character to plug-in for whatever the political narrative is that day. Vladimir Putin now doesn't have to do anything at all. Actually Georgian forces attacked separtist forces in south ossetia. Russian 'peace keepers' in south ossetia reacted swiftly crippling the georgian military and driving to within 40kms of Tblisi i believe. Their rapid reaction indicates that they had prepped for just such an attack by Georgia and were ready to take advantage of it. Whether they knew it was coming or not i don't know. Still it was an easy victory for russia.
