Don’t want this to be a political thread , of course delete if not allowed. But , being that it has the potential to be a pretty serious event… I know I don’t understand it completely. I had thought this was resolved a few years back and they were on the path to becoming part of the EU.
Putin had some pretty strong words today, almost threatening us and the eu with nuclear war…
    Thoughts?….

Politics isn't allowed but a potential War situation is above Politics. No issues with this thread. Will stay open until the discussion turns into a Trump-Biden fight or Republicans are bad, democrats are worse type of pissing contest.

Now, I think Russia and USA has great advantage with this escalation. Energy prices are up and helping Russia's economy. US is also able to utilize the rock gas with high prices.

No idea when and how this escalation will end but Russia and USA should stop worrying about each other and look towards China.

War and Politics cannot be separated they're extensions of each other.

I wonder what our reaction would have been if Russia were sending arms to Mexico and invited them to join the Warsaw Pact back in the day. Unfortunately for the Ukraine, they're too close to the Russian bear geographically. The smart move would be to turn down NATO membership. Then stockpile arms on the world market enough to make Putin think about a protracted insurgency that will bleed them almost at the same levels as their Afghan invasion. In the long run, the tide always turns towards the insurgents in an asymmetrical conflict.

Yep. Pretty much. Tough to blame Russia as it’s not like the West doesn’t like to press their borders of influence at every possible turn. This is a good opinion on it. It’s a Fox article, but not a Fox person saying it. Hope he’s right that Russia just wants a resolution and buffer zone.

Eastern Europeans in general are a pretty attractive lot. The Finn's are a little too affluent (meaning chubby) to pull it off as porn stars though.

Just generally this is happening right now because Putin has some tension at home. Covid and the continuing upwards flow of wealth to the oligarchs - which is in it's 3rd decade now, has caused Putin to be facing an unusual undercurrent of dissatisfaction on the home front.

A good war always props up the leader.

They do. A lot of Russian people also live in Eastern Ukraine causing this current tension with Russia. Crimea population was Russian mostly but it belonged to Ukraine. Russia annexed Crimea and probably wants to annex eastern Ukraine as well
