I’m surprised that they didn’t go the corporate sponsor route. Sell the name every say, 10 years, new uniform designs etc. They’d have made a killing!
Could they have picked a worse name than the Commanders. Must have had a meeting right after one helluva party and all involved were seriously hung over. One extreme to another. First a name that insults an entire segment of the population to a name with military connotations that really has no meaning as a team name. Zero thought and imagination. I wonder what the logo is gonna look like.. A M4? Perhaps general stars? F'n preposterous name.
Well, Commanders does have the connotation that they're fully in control. The team has been anything but that through Snyder's ownership. Maybe they're trying to wish a new path into existence? I think they took this process too seriously. What they should have done is sent out a request to the people who have been STH's for at least 5 years and asked them what name they wanted the team to bear. They should have excluded Redskins and any other name with racial or otherwise objectionable characteristics. They should have excluded trademarks and copyrights (sadly, Cheeto Eating Clowns would go under that condition.) When they got back the results they should have tabulated the top three suggestions, excluding any that team ownership did not want for some reason or another, and then put it to a vote. That way they'd have gotten a name that lots of people were demonstrably on board with. The out for the ownership on suggestions would be because people do occasionally gang up and pick something like Boatty McBoatface for a billion dollar research vessel when it becomes a meme to do so.
