Thanks for your comments. I disagree. We already have two 1st round picks on our OL. One doesn't need to have used 3, 4 or even 5 1st round picks on one's OL to have a very good OL. OG is the least important position on the OL and that's the only glaring need that we have on the OL for this upcoming season. We have already used one 1st round pick on the LG position. If we use another, it should either be at C or RT, not RG. I will be happy if JD takes Neal or Ekwonu or even Linderbaum, but I don't think it a necessity. I don't think think that either Thibodeaux or Hutchinson will fall to us at #4. I hope that one will, but I'll believe it when I see it; otherwise, at present, I don't think there' another Edge worthy of a being a top 10 pick. We need playmakers on both sides of the ball. I don't think we need a CB that high, but need a veteran CB to help our young CBs, and I signed a good young veteran CB and a S in FA. That leaves, WR, and to a lesser extent LB. A topnotch LB like Dean or Lloyd who is equally adept at playing the pass and the run will have a huge, positive impact on the middle of our D. There are a lot of different ways that JD can go that will get the team to where we want it to be.
I forgot to mention this earlier, but I signed a good young CB in Chandon Sullivan of Green Bay. He's only 25. He can challenge Echols or Hall for the #1 spot. I agree regarding Ebiketie and Ojabo. They can be designated pass rushers their rookie season if they aren't ready to start, and then move into a starting role in 2023. I'd rather have Thibodeaux, but doubt that he falls to us at #4.
Very well done! Can I offer my thoughts? 1. Glad you advocate cutting Rankins 2. I guess we will need to resign Foley, although I think he is a tad overrated. With all the ink he gets as a run stuffer, teams ran on the jets this year. The problem is that Douglas WAY overpaid John FM making it hard to say no to Foley/Williams. 3. I don't think Denver will "pony up" that much for the #4 pick (get it?) 5. I like your pick of Dean at 9. The jets need LBs damn it! The former college safeties taken in 2021 will never be NFL LBs--they should be playing safety 6. I don't think Douglas will wait till pick 40 to address OL 7. Surprised you want Tim Ward back--all potential, no production 8. Thank God S Davis will be cut--could not tackle my 88 year old mother in law 9. I think the jets might bring back Walter as a 3rd RB
Excellent response. I can live with one of the three OL you mention taken in top 10, but part of me wants defense to be addressed heavy. If Bechton comes back healthy and productive ( a big if) that would mean a lot. I keep going back to run defense. The jets CANNOT get literally run over next year like they did this year. Anybody who is uncertain should go back and watch the Colts game--I know Taylor is a great back, but a high school kid could have run over the jets that game.
right, but who is going to rush the QB? Give em all day back there on defense, and then come out and watch Wilson struggle with pressure and even with your moves the 2022 Jets would look alot like the 2021 Jets
I support NC's pick of Ebikitie to address our pass rush. Ebikitie may have a way to go in terms of run defense, but he is a tremendous athlete, with speed, quickness, and explosion. I have no doubt that he can be an impactful rush specialist on passing downs as he develops behind Carl Lawson and JFM. A front four of Lawson, JFM, Williams, and Ebikitie on passing downs should put considerable pressure on quarterbacks.
Of course you can, Tom! Thanks for reading and for your comments. 1.He's a definitely liability on running downs, and didn't give us nearly what I thought he would as a pass rusher. Cutting him would save the Jets $5.5 million on the cap that they could use to sign a better DT, or use on a player at another position. 2. Initially, I wanted to re-sign Foley. I like him and he was a good player found in the late rounds. Many of those don't come along. I think a lot of the problems stopping the run this past season were due to Rankins, an overly aggressive D stressing getting up field, and poor play by the LBs (aside form Mosely. and to a lesser extent Q. Williams once he arrived), and the safeties. Still, he had some issues, and may not be a scheme fit. Some have said that he's more of a 3-4 NT rather than a 4-3 DT. Too bad that we couldn't trade him and get something for him, but I guess it's time to move on. 3. I agree that you're probably right about Denver not giving up that much, but if they really like Pickett, and another team does as well that drafts before Denver, all bets are off. 5. Thanks. I think that Dean or Lloyd in the middle of our D would go a long way towards making it a much better D. I can't say that Nasirildeen and Sherwood will never be NFL LBs, but they have a good ways to go. If they do fail as LBs, it was a nice try by JD and Saleh, and we can always move them back to S and give them a shot. 6. You may be right, but I don't think so. If he does, it will be because either drafts Linderbaum or drafts an OT with the intention of playing him at RG in 2022 and then moving him out to RT in 2023. That would make sense, and I'd have no problems with that. I don't believe that he will draft an OG in the 1st round. If he signs an OG in FA, I wouldn't expect him to draft an OG before the 3rd or 4th round. 7. He's very cheap, young, and I think I remember reading some good things about his play this season, but could be mistaken. It was also kind of an insurance move in case they aren't able to get an Edge they like in FA or the draft. If they do get the Edge they want, they can always cut him before, during, or after TC and recoup most of the money. 8. JD and Saleh may not cut Davis. They may give him another chance in TC, or even another season. I did it because I've given up on him, and cutting him opened up a little more cap space. 9. The Jets may bring Walter back as a 3rd or 4th RB, and in fact, I think they will at least for TC, but I will be surprised if he's on the final roster. Thanks again for reading and your comments.
Again, agree with almost all you write. Yeah, I go back and forth on Foley and I agree he is better in a 3-4. But I think he stays. Linderbaum would be nice but if we take him I hope it is at 10 and not 4 (barring trade). You may be right about Davis. Douglas may not be willing to admit Davis. Mims, Zudinga, and Perine all should go. Were it me, I would give Mims one last try and jet-i-son the other three. Can't figure out why Mims regressed so badly in 2021, but would have him on short lease. Walter, Ward, both are purely depth so again we'll see.
I agree that if we take Linderbaum, it should be at #10, not #4, but I'm hoping that we take Burks at #10. Yeah, I think Mims gets one last chance in TC and perhaps preseason, if for no other reason, to try to rehabilitate his trade value. Right now, it's at zero, but if he can have a good TC and play well in preseason, he could possibly stay, or they may be able to trade him for a 6th or 7th round pick or a STer or something.
Burks has been moving up on the mock draft boards. I could live with that pick there, although I see bigger needs in round 1 for jets. . Probably unlikely, but I'm still hoping WR J. Williams falls to jets at start of round 2 and jets grab him there. Only a team that doesn't need the first rounder to contribute next year (like the Chiefs), or a team with a number of high picks (jets, Giants) will take WR Williams that high because of his injury. So I'm thinking/hoping he might fall to round 2.
IMO the Jets have no bigger need than getting Zach an elite WR. Burks is better than Williams. He has a better body to take the pounding in the NFL, is probably better at contested catches, is more versatile, and is a better blocker, and may be not that far behind Williams in terms of speed. In addition, he's not coming off a major injury. I no longer want Williams at all in the 1st 2 rounds. If he were to fall to the 3rd round then that might be a different story, but that's not gonna happen. As you said, someone like the Chiefs or GB will take him for the future.
I love Dean just not at 10. He is is 6 only and about 225. Yes he is fast but a little small. If he drops to the 2nd round I don't have a problem taking him as Jets suck at LB. I would prefer to take either another tackle. Love Ekwonu and think he could fall to 10 as Neal and Cross will go ahead. I think seeing how many times QBs got sacked in the post season will be revealing in the draft as teams want to protect the 20 million dollar QBs. So, i think we will go tackle at 4 and pick up either WR or edge at 10. At least that is what I would be happy with. Dean is good, just not at 10.
I’d take Lloyd over Dean in that situation. Burks fits the bill at 10 I like that pick. Highly doubt we take 2 TE so I would take one out and put a corner there.
