Thomas (who I want nothing to do with) has most of his due money Thru bonuses and restructures ie. That money is due from NO in the event of a trade. His cap hit would be $1mm in 2022 and no dead money from the team moving forward and a $15mm cap hit in 2023. Diggs didn’t want more money, nor did he get any, he just wanted out of Minnesota. They restructured his contract upon arrival but received no new money.
Good point. You’re right. But the situations are still different. Diggs had never been tagged as unreliable. Even if Ridley has legitimate mental health issues that lead to his leave of absence, it’s still difficult to trust him. For the right price it’d be a good move, but you have to give up capital and decide within a season if he’s going to be worth an extension. And if he doesn’t want to play here, you’re going to have to tag him so it’s not lost draft capital on a one year rental. I’m most open to Ridley because of his age, but I’d prefer to grab him for a third rather than anything higher due to all of the question marks.
That is as BOLD as it gets! I could see this happening if the price is right. Not sure what that price would be though. Joe Douglas values OL too much for this. Unless he was going to turn around and use his top 2 picks on OL. Fant was a really good player for the Jets last year. They need to add talent, not subtract it. Same with all the people suggesting to trade Quinnen.
I basically agree with your reasoning, but I would want to know the details of Ridley's situation and of Thomas'. Ridley scares me if his issues aren't behind him or well in hand at least. I think that Thomas is the best of the three, but didn't he have some kind of dispute with the Saints? If so, was it over the surgery? Regardless, it sounds like he might be a bit of a headache. Doesn't Cooper disappear in games and for large chunks of the season? I seem to remember our talking about him in that regard a few years ago before he went to the Cowboys. Is the reason you think he would be the cheapest in a trade Dallas' cap situation? On one hand, I like the idea of a proven WR for Zach. Then again, I think Davis was fairly proven and seemed to be a WR on the rise. Now, I'm half-wishing that JD had never signed him and signed another WR instead. OTOH, if we trade for a WR, JD probably won't be drafting one early. I think Burks would be absolute dynamite in our offense, and MLF could use him in a variety of ways. I really, really want the Jets to draft Burks. Maybe almost as much as I did for them to draft Zach.
I don’t pretend to know what’s going on in Ridley’s life but I assume any trade made would be done so after due diligence. If he passes the “reliability test” I think he’s worth more than a third. If he doesn’t pass, he’s not worth a third. Who’s worse (assuming ATL was the reason) -having a mental breakdown preventing you from playing for a team -timing surgery so you miss a season and don’t have to play for a team -bonus choice! Publicly trash talking your CS for not using you right (later proven right imo)
Unless Carolina's #2 is a 1st rounder, I don't see any team giving up a #15 pick and not getting a first round pick among the return compensation.
That's certainly bold! They won't do it of course, but let's say they did. That would likely spell the end of this regime. They'd be starting from scratch with a hole at the biggest position on the team.
Bringing a player with emotional problems to the Jets. What could go wrong? I wouldn't even consider Ridley if we got him for half price.
My bold prediction is that JD will use some of our abundance of draft assets to trade for a proven veteran player.
You may be right, but teams have traded down out of the first round because they weren't crazy about the players available to them at their spot and/or they needed more picks. I know that most of the time, perhaps all, that team received a 1st round pick the following season, but I think I remember a team or two trading down and not receiving a 1st round pick in return, but I could be mistaken. It possibly would take both of Denver's 2nds and 3rd to get it done.
Anything's possible of course. But I think to agree to give up your first round pick you'd need a equivalent piece back, so I'd guess a starter that your team no longer needs, perhaps because of a scheme change, or the player didn't achieve their potential but the trading partner thinks they can get out of him. As an example - and I'm not suggesting we do this - Saleh decides that Becton isn't a good fit for their blocking scheme, and is concerned about his long term health, so he offers Becton in return for a team's 2022 #1.
I love all these cavalier comments about trading our few solid performers, pro bowlers or not. Let me get this straight? At this stage we might be able to count with one hand the talent available to build this team around, first year in a long time where the GM and CS actually did the selection together based on a long term plan, and at the drop of a hat we would consider a trade for one or more of the actual contributors on the team so we can continue thru the perennial turn style of players over and over and over again, never sustaining critical mass long enough to build a team. Can we please for once give the building blocks a chance longer than a stop for a cup of coffee, putting our energy fixing what’s broken instead of reinventing what’s actually working? Let’s just continue to build on the solid draft from last year, hopefully fill two or so critical holes with selective free agents to be more competitive, saving sufficient ammunition to extend our own top performers in 2023 and beyond. I’m so tired of the perennial rebuilding and forever tanking BS of the last 20 years . Time to give this plan a chance.
Agreed! Though some of those trade ideas did qualify as bold! I think I would sign up for that in a heartbeat. Bold indeed, but a true #1 WR for Wilson would be great. I feel like Green Bay should be more respectful to Adams though. Give him a long term deal. He is great and clearly has earned it.
Well, there is no WR of Adams caliber to be had with a first round pick. So if WR is what the combined wisdom of JD and the CS feel is most important, that would be it. Not to mention pissing Aaron completely off in his send off and giving GB the chance to retool from the ground up. But, but but, would Adams want to go to the Jets, not necessarily a playoff contender.
On paper it sounds good, but I have a real concern about bringing a guy like that who has had great success with one team and a HOF QB to a team and situation like the Jets. He would be taking a BIG step down in the quality of players around him, and while he might be happy at first to get a fat paycheck, that would soon wear off and he'd be frustrated at the least. I'd prefer the Jets use that #4 on the best WR available rather than that deal.
Yeah, that is why I said the Packers should be more respectful. I think he would choose a better situation than the Jets if he hit free agency, though I think he would definitely make them a playoff contender. I mean he can't be more frustrated than how last year ended against the Buccaneers and how this year ended against the 49ers, but I get what you mean. I am pretty sure the Packers will keep him and Rodgers, but they have made some odd decisions in the past, so you never know. I just feel they are too close to a Super Bowl to blow everything up.
