The Jets front office has made it known (I read it in the paper a few weeks ago, dont recall where) that signing Jerricho Cotchery to an extension is going to be a top priority this offseason. As you are all no doubt aware, the offseason is not here yet, and hopefully it wont be for a few more weeks.

However, theres only so much that can be said about this weeks game. After you sort through all the personal baggage and obligatory border-war nonsense, theres going to be a football game played this sunday, and I for one feel that its all been hashed out already; I have no interest in anything the papers will print between now and kickoff other than the injury report.

So a more interesting subject, I think, is Cotchery. In his third year, hes just had a breakout season, albeit as a second target behind Laveranues Coles. He came close to 1000 yards (I could be wrong but I dont believe he crossed 1000), 70 or so catches, a couple touchdowns, and the stats dont say it all because anybody whos watched him play can tell that hes going to stick around this league for a good long while, whether its with this team or with somebody else.

So the question becomes, whats his market value. I tend to think that the Jets will be willing to pay whatever it takes to keep him on board. Coles is playing great, Id say hes just hitting his prime, but there have already been injury concerns (most notably the toe), not to mention the fact that while everything seems pretty now, a couple months ago, before the team started winning games, Coles was starting to look like a malcontent. None of this is to say that I think Coles will be gone any time soon, but all of this is just that much more incentive for the Jets to keep Cotchery around.

The most recent deal for a wide receiver that I can recall was Deion Branch getting 39 mil and 13 gauranteed over 6 years. I dont think Cotchery necessarily would get paid like that if he hit the open market, but hes only under contract for one more year, and then hes free to test the open market, and if hes coming off another season like the one hes just had, he could hit it big. So what numbers should the Jets be offering?

They should offer whatever it takes to keep him. The team is winning, the HC loves him and has said so publically numerous times... he won't get top 20 WR pay, but top 30 I would think.

I've also been looking over this next draft. This kid Meacham from Tenn is just the speed burner this team could use at WR to compliment to of the best possession WR's in the NFL in Coles and Cotch, B Smith as a dangerous slash guy, and Meacham has world class speed. Then at 2.5, we take a very solid run stopping DE, Carriker at 6-2 310 to replace kimo and Hamilton who have only one sack between them. This kid is more run stopper, but we need that, and should be good for 5-6 sacks to boot.

Then, either a RG, CB or RB with our own second rounder. Irons could be there that late.

But, back on topic, yes, Cotchery has to be signed. Given Coles injury history (even tho God bless him he always suits up) Cotchery is imo just as important to our offense as Branch was to NE. He's everything the FO and CS preaches what they want in a player. pony up the $ and prove it. (and say bye-bye to McCariens)

The other thing about Cotchery would be that he represents both continuity and growth in the new regime. Bradway sent players of Cotchery's ilk out of town on a regular basis and things just got less and less promising long-term.

Of course Bradway's timing may have been the issue. Who knows if the Jets could have kept Randy Thomas and Kareem McKenzie if they had bothered to actually bargain with them a couple of years before free agency beckoned. That's where Cotchery is now.

DraftDaddy.com has Cotchery listed as a restricted FA this offseason. Can anyone confirm this to be the case?

They've got to be wrong. He's listed by NFLPA.org as being under contract for 850,000 with the Jets for 2007. He'll be a FA in 2008.

Not sure what the new CBA specifies but he'll have 4 years of service at that point. Under the old CBA you were an RFA as a free agent with 3 years service and a UFA with 4 as I recall.

from an article in the Post on December 6th. Here is how far some of the key players on our roster are signed:

    Through 2007
    Jerricho Cotchery
    Erik Coleman
    Victor Hobson

    Through 2008
    Kerry Rhodes
    Jonathan Vilma
    Eric Barton

    Through 2009
    Laveranues Coles
    Dewayne Robertson

    Through 2010
    Shaun Ellis
    Chris Baker
    D'Brickashaw Ferguson
    Nick Mangold

    Through 2011
    Chad Pennington

The article really makes no mention of any resticted years, or stuff like that. If you want to take a look, here is the link: http://jets.aolsportsblog.com/2006/12/06/jets-front-office-is-sitting-pretty/

Cothery is a "Mangini Guy"..He has worked his ass off since EM has arrived and earned his spot..My guess JC will be a Jet for quite a while.

We already had a thread where we predicted Cotchery's extension numbers. Let me have a look...

New England will be $30 mil under the cap next year and who knows how much in '08. Can't wait until Vilma and and/or Rhodes are wearing Patriots blue... Mangini and Tannenbaum will rue the day they tried to muddy the Deion Branch waters....

I've read several comments recently from Cotchery that tell me he's a Jet through and through, including a comment in this morning's paper about Chad deserving the Comeback Award. No question he wants to remain here and I think he'll sign any reasonable offer.

Vilma might be in Pats blue, not sure if the FO will keep him. But I can promise you that Rhodes will not be leaving the Jets, he will be signed to an extension next year. One of the first things Mangini did when he got here was pull Rhodes aside and tell him he was going to be a leader on the defense. Mangini likes the kid and Tanny will make it a point of keeping him around. I can almost gaurantee you that much.

I see Vilma as a real possibility to get traded this offseason. The Jets like him as a player but they do not see him as a star, and they know he will try to get star bucks when he approaches FA.

He is a RFA next season, meaning he does have one year left on his deal.

Unless he's the lovechild of mangini & Tanny, he'll want more than 'top 30' money to sign for more than a year. If they want him longterm, he'll want to get his money now, not try for it when he's 30!

I expect his deal will have to average at least 5M/yr.

Probably right on the money. The Jets might get 4 to 4.5 million a year if they were willing to put more up front. Maybe a 5 year 22 million dollar deal with 12 million up front. That would still leave him room to sign one huge deal if everything worked out over the 5 seasons.

Letting Vilma go would be a massive mistake. He and Rhodes are the only guys on the defense that I view as untouchable. I want both to retire Jets, regardless of the money.
