Starting to think that the three bolded WILL be the top 3 in the draft. Puts jets in tougher position because these three would probably be best fit for jets at 4 (absent trade down) . BUT, seems like somebody always want to trade up for QB around draft week. I hope we don't take DB in the top 10 with either pick (4, 10), but we'll see. Reminds me of Mike MacCagnan, who believes the game is played outside the numbers, taking 4 DBs AND 3 receivers in ONE draft (2017). MacCagnan probably would take Stingley and Hamilton at 4 and 10, and ignore WR, edge, LB, and of course OL. Oh wait, he wouldn't HAVE that second first round pick were he still jets GM.
Why not this year? We added 7 starters through the FA and the draft last year (injuries took away 2 of them immediately). Point is, through FA and the draft all 7 of those holes can be filled easily. If JD thinks Wilson and the team is ready to make a big jump, this is going to be a fun off season. FWIW: it looks like Zach told his gf he wouldn’t have any time for her for a while.
I don’t think anyone is suggesting taking Hamilton over Hutch or Thib. The question should be, is the Greek kid that much better than any of the EDGES we could get in the 2nd? Enagbare form SC Bontito for OK, The kid from Cincinatti etc… I’d rather have ex: Hamilton + Enagbare than Kalfakis + Brisker 10 times out of 10
Man...I don't know. If you are talking about Hamilton at 4, IMO that is a reach. I appreciate your thoughts, but I don't think a safety has been selected in the top 5 for 30 years (Sean Taylor, 2002). Two of the best safeties, Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu were both taken outside the top 15. I guess we'll see. I would consider Hamilton if the jets traded back and he fell to us between 16-20. But that assumes a lot.
I'm not saying they can't all be filled this year, but they may not be able to filled with studs, in which case you do the best you can this year and look to upgrade next year.
At S, I'm really hoping that JD will sign one of Marcus Williams or Jessie Bates III in FA. Both are ball hawks and good safeties.
The thing to keep in mind is that the game has evolved over the last 30 years. When Sean Taylor was drafted, the NFL idea of offense was still 3 yards and a cloud of dust. It was starting to change, but was nowhere near the passing league that the NFL is today. During that time just as TEs and IOL have taken on much greater importance, so have Safeties. That still doesn't mean we should take Hamilton at #4. But as I've said before, it wouldn't be the worst thing we could do in the draft and offseason. What would you think about taking Hamilton at #4 in the following scenario: JD signs Mike Williams or Allen Robinson and Dalton Schultz in FA to give Zach additional weapons. He signs Laken Tomlinson to play RG. He re-signs Moses (RT) and Piniero (K). He also signs Jimmy Morrisey to back up McGovern at C, and Matt Brieda as part of the RB rotation. Then in the draft, he takes Hamilton at #4, drafts Karlaftis (Edge) at #10, drafts OG Zion Johnson (or an OL who has experience at both RT and RG) and Christian Harris (OLB) in the 2nd round, adds a CB in the 3rd round, adds another S and TE in the 4th round, then added a RB and another OL in the 5th round. He would have addressed most of our holes/glaring needs. I'm not saying that's what I think should happen, but I think it would be a pretty darned good offseason, would address most of our holes at starting positions, and even addressed the depth. It would add playmakers on both offense and defense, improved the talent level of the team, and should have both the offense and D playing at a higher level next season. Would you still be unhappy with taking Hamilton at #4? If so, would you possibly change your mind if he racks up 4-5 interceptions, 2-3 forced fumbles, 5-6 passes defensed, and 80 tackles his rookie season and becomes an All Pro? I'm not saying that would definitely happen, but I think it could be possible. He's that good.
I like your plan with one caveat--- do not sign Allen Robinson. I had him on my fantasy team in 2021 and he did not due squat for me all year. I finally cut him in week 14.
Robinson is the exact wrong type of receiver the Jets should be after. He’ll be 29 years old coming off an injury plagued season and looking for what he and his agent probably estimate is his last opportunity for a moderately big pay day.
Signing FA WRs just isn't the play. There's a reason these guys are hitting FA. It's time to get another rookie WR that can develop with the young QB.
I think JD's stance is that a proven WR will do a lot to help him accurately judge Wilson's play. If we draft a WR and he takes a while to adjust then it'll be harder to accurately judge Wilson's play. Is he playing poorly because he still doesn't have a true #1 WR or is he bad all on his own? If we sign a proven WR and Wilson still sucks then it's a much clearer picture. I still don't know if I'd rather draft a WR or sign one but I've seen that floated around as what JD might be thinking and it makes sense to me.
I just came across an interesting tidbit. With the 3d round pick we gave to the Vikings (the other 3d rounder we swapped for the 4th, which netted Echols and Pinnock), they literally did exactly what you suggested and drafted OG Wyatt Davis. Ended up playing 0 defensive snaps this year, only played some special team. That's the exact position with the exact pick we had. Agreed that he should have addressed RG in free agency with someone like Trai Turner, but the AVT trade worked out no matter how you slice it. We ended up with the solid injury free guy who made PFF all rookie team, plus two other productive players and avoided drafting Jenkins, while that extra 3d round pick, which could have been used for another G, actually WAS used for it, and busted. Let' take the win.
With the rumors of us trying to trade back out of the 10th I came up with this scenario, what do you guys think? 10th overall + 6th round pick for: For Philly's: #16 Overall 3rd round (#83) 2023 2nd round Could grab your favorite pass rusher at #4, #16 would be a great spot to pick a big time wideout, 3rd round is a great spot for interior OL/Linebackers/Safety compared to a 6th round pick.
That seems a cheap deal for the Eagles, dropping 6 places for a 3rd and a future pick and not a first at that. I would be wanting 16 and their 2nd round pick and probably their 2nd in 23
