Why are people expecting him to be Herbert? Herbert is a generational talent (Luck Tier). I think Wilson has potential to grow like Josh Allen did. Josh Allen started out rough, but then broke out during year 3.
Wilson was 7-20 yesterday with 5 net passing yards. Yes 5. Was Allen ever that bad? -- I also don't remember people ever saying Herbert was a generational talent
He gets a C from me. I'd probably accept a C+ as well, if someone tried to convince me. Statistically, he left a lot to be desired. Too many INTs and too few TDs for the season. I dont think anyone would really debate that. He was among the worst QBs in the league statistically. It is what it is. He's a rookie, it happens. Having said that, I thought he showed some pretty serious improvement as the season went on. He took care of the ball significantly better, and made a ton more plays running the ball. He didnt make a ton of plays through the air, but he hit way more easy throws that he was missing early on. I think there are some things to build on here. The Jets need to continue to put him in situations to succeed. If there is a WR that shakes loose and is available for a trade, do it. If you can get a healthy Calvin Ridley for a 2nd, you need to consider it. Continue to improve the OL. Build the depth so that if guys get hurt, whomever is playing LT doesnt get him killed like yesterday.
Oregon Duck fans at least knew this haha. Dude performed at a high level in college with different coaches/offensive schemes every year. He went under the radar like Mahomes.
I would give him a D. The first half of the year was atrocious. He obviously wasn't ready. The second half of the year was better. I'm still holding out hope that he can be the guy.
Allen made a massive jump in year two and an even bigger one in year three. Not sure why people discount his second year so much. It’s not like it wasn’t a great building block year. He accounted for 29 touchdowns. As far as Wilson - he gets an incomplete from me. He wasn’t very good for most of the year though.
Herbert wasn't expected to start at all last season, he got thrown in due to injury, so he wasn't regarded as a generational talent at all, he may very well have turned into one though. Using your rationale It may well be Davis Mills out of this year's draft that becomes generational, granted he needs to carry on next season just like Herbert. Though you mention Allen who was knocking in 17 rushing TD's in his first two rough years btw, some comparison that.
Hero hall was the only chance the Jets had yesterday (as small as that chance was) otherwise he would have thrown 20 balls into the stands because nothing was ever going to be there. I understand what your saying may be right in a vacuum but you’re basically asking him to concede the game. After his injury return he played within the system when he had some weapons to allow it. Hero ball yesterday didn’t bother me a bit
This is spot on. Zach could have done some thing better like not trying to extend plays as much, but honestly, then what - just throw the ball away all the time? Without Fant this OLine was doomed. And without top 4 receivers, no one was getting open. I don't have the full footage, but every time the showed the receivers, which they did a few times, they were completely closed down. Even commentators were saying no one is open. And few times there was a small opportunity, play makers couldn't make plays. Kroft dropped twice. Johnson fell on what looked like a play for a decent gain. Carter dropped, Black dropped. Zach also had a long throw to Carter, where Carter had to come back for the ball and was taken out by a DB. On the identical play two weeks ago TL got a PI call. Even the throws to Mims and Carter, which he missed, the guys were fully covered, he was just trying to make something happen. I saw a time or two when the pocket was collapsing maybe he could have released the ball right before getting hit when receiver finally got open, but honestly it seemed too little too late, what he was dealing with today was too much to ask. Even in the TB game - when Fant went down the line collapsed. Yes, we did have one nice drive after that with Berrios' help, but you could see the difference without a competent LT. Yesterday all game without a half decent LT, weak OL, and no WRs, Zach did what he could. Didn't end up with 4 INTs, or any actually, which by itself is a miracle.
The hero ball was mostly on third downs if I recall correctly. The most egregious error came when he went out of bounds and turned a 39 FG into a 49 yarder. Luckily we made the kick.
Spot on. Yeah, he could throw it away every time. Run game wasn't working. He had to try to do something - without costly TOs. So extended the plays as long as he could, and sometimes had no time to throw away. Heck, there were plays where he was tackled and nearly sacked on hand off. The fact he was able to finish the game at all is a miracle.
Wilson had pretty much nothing to work with yesterday and the bad effort is not on him. But it speaks to how bad the Jets really are that they finish a game with 54 yards of offense.
Reading this thread is just sad. There are more than a few posters who have lost all perspective and for their own mental health need to take a break from watching and talking about the Jets. They have become so negative that they have become blinded to any positivity, growth, reason for hope, or talent in young players. It really is dragging this board down and making it unreadable.
Watching Zack yesterday reminded me of Mahomes running for his life against the Bucs, minus the off platform throws hitting his WR in his facemask.
The offense is bad but how are you expected to compete when guys like Tarik Black and Jeff Smith are taking a significant amount of reps at WR and Connor McDermott and Dan Feeney are the starting LT and C. They couldn't get any push going in the run game and were horrendous in pass pro. Hell, one snap Zach took he was almost hit before he could hand the ball off. With that being said, the Jets don't have the depth to be missing their starting C and 4 WRs (Davis, Moore, Crowder, Berrios). Don't even get me started on the TE position. Really big offseason coming up for JD; there is no excuses. Compete for a playoff spot next season or the seats get hot.
Well he did hit a few of them in the hands that they dropped. Plus he had no where near the quality help Mahomes did in SB, while defense against him was even better than Bucks' one in SB.
