Resign him now. Next year we’ll be looking at Davis,Moore,Berrios, Garrett Wilson and I guess mims and the Smiths. That’s pretty good
Franchise is out of the question - that's 18 mil. Even transition tag is 15.5. I don't think anyone will be paying Berrios this much. He will have to hit an open market, and anyone can pay him, just like we can. He will be a hot commodity too, and can choose any team. It will not be easy to keep him - we will have to pay him more than other teams offer. Just like anyone else can.
https://ustadium.com/p/831017 Source: Jets and Braxton Berrios Begin Extension Talks According to a team source, the Jets and ST/WR Braxton Berrios have started initial contract extension talks. Both sides are motivated to get a deal done that will keep the emerging playmaker from hitting free agency in March. Berrios has big fans in OC Mike LaFleur and ST coach Brant Boyer. He is a favorite amongst the staff and teammates in the locker room.
Sounds like we may get our wish. As always with "sources" though, take this report with a grain of salt but I hope this one is accurate and they can agree to a reasonable extension for Braxton!
For sure I want Berrios back. -Kick Returner -Punt Returner -Legitimate Backup Slot Receiver -End Around Specialist -Trick/Special Play Specialist That’s a lot of roles 1 player can fill.
Here’s hoping…this is the type of player that in the past we’ve seemed to devalue and release. Danny Woodhead comes to mind. We also penny pinched on Myers and have been looking for a kicker ever since seems like. We also let Andre Robert’s go after he shined as a KR too…he’s STILL doing it…had a KR TD this week for the Chargers. Have we had. kr TD since until Berrios just did it? Not sure… we have SO many holes on this roster…I’d like to actually keep the players that are playing well and filling holes…
Not sure about “broken news” per se but Nick Spano has definitely had some insider details. As far as I know they’ve never incorrectly reported anything, but I couldn’t say that with 100% certainty.
I feel like they play the incarcerated bob game. They take a very obvious guess and then play it off as news. Like they've been clinging to this "Gettleman is out" story for weeks... well yea no shit. So while I want to be excited about the Berrios thing, I feel like it's just another educated guess because no shit the Jets want to extend Berrios before he hits the open market.
I don’t want to stake my reputation on it, because it was almost a year ago now, but Spano does appear on Play Like a Jet at times and if I remember right he had a very accurate play by play of the Saleh hiring essentially as it happened. I think he’s just a decently connected guy who has like 1 or 2 friends who work for the team. He’s not really a reporter and generally doesn’t try to be.
$7.5mm/yr is the starting point (see Cole Beasley at 4 years 30 mil ) IMO JD was right to let Anderson walk and “misjudged the market” was a cop out to placate the fans as “we’re still in a tear down and signing a sizable contract to an unproven receiver is a big no-no during a tear down” wouldn’t be well received. BC he’s used that excuse before, there’s no way JD lets Berrios walk. 3 yrs $25mm I’d like the Jets to be in the Cordarrelle Patterson market too.
