That is what Saleh is going to have to weigh after next week for the whole season. Was it a lack of talent and young players, or Ulbrich just isn't good enough? Obviously it is a combination, but I haven't seen enough from him to keep him if a better option becomes available.

Definitely not list worthy, but it was nice to see Kenny Yeboah play well. Hopefully he can follow up on it next game. Maybe he'll go into next season with a chance at TE2.

Yeah he maybe better in less space. You were also right on Mann, who continues to shank a punt or two per game. Can’t have that, even if he’s a solid coffin corner guy, that’s not nearly enough to keep on a roster.

I think it's pretty clear the primary issue is Ulbrich.

We have more talent than last year at:

    CB
    DL
    LB

So more talent at 3/4 position groups on defense yet the defense is far worse than it was the previous year. How do we explain that other than the coaching getting markedly worse?

Ulbrich has another year left at least.

The injuries and practice squad level talent in places have been enough of a difference to say that it's been a bad situation for the D.

We also don't know how much of an impact he's had with the development of our young secondary, which has been 1 particular highlight of the season.

Talent often means a lot. Just look at how hot and cold Bowles was with his own D.

Is the D that much better in terms of talent, other than having Mosley back? Also have to remember we haven't had Maye for much of the season in the secondary this year and our stud FA signing has been out for the season and in terms of CB going into the season PFF had this to say about the Jets defense "The Jets have a solid-looking front seven, and the addition of Robert Saleh as a coach will certainly help the unit move in the right direction, but their cornerback group is one of the weakest units at any spot in the league heading into the year. Saleh’s defense is one that makes life a little easier for cornerbacks, but even so, the Jets have nobody on the roster at that position that was drafted higher than the 5th round or had more than 200 snaps of capable play last year." so its not like the general consensus is we did anything to improve in that area

Why does he get another year? Saleh's whole thing is performing under adversity and when this guy's crew hits adversity they turn the opponent into Pro Bowl caliber players.

From what I can tell he's kind of an outsider to this group anyway so maybe Saleh was hoping one of his real choices for DC would shake loose after this season.

well we were a 3-4 last year and had to change to a new system and don't really have the players yet. last year we had player made for the system we were running for over a decade across several GMs and coaches. this year is a whole new scheme and system and we need players for it. It didn't help that most of the players we grabbed to help the young ones got hurt.
