jeez, another bust ala Vernon Gholston One thing that most GMs get a woody over is the combine stats O the guy runs a sub zero 40 (lamb Jones) or the guy can press 200 lbs 100 times Who gives a fuck. Desire and wanting to be o the field can be intangibles that are often overlooked My guess is this year's Gholston draft award will go to Kayvon Thibodeaux, another guy who blows up "the Freak" tape but has no desire. I just hope the jets can get some picks for MB. Anyone who takes 17 weeks to rehab for a 8 week injury is a quitter in my book.
The thing that gets me about the Becton pick is that he wasn't even really a combine warrior. He did two events, the 40 and the bench. He was elite at the 40 (which means almost nothing for an OL) but below-average at the bench, especially for someone his weight. When you combine that with him being a malcontent with sometimes questionable technique it's just such a head scratching pick from JD.
The two greatest mysteries to me with the Jets are: 1. Why we haven't had a decent - not great, but simply decent - TE? 2. Why we haven't had an above average - not great, just above average - Edge? These mysteries have endured for over a decade, almost 2 decades. How is this possible? To me it simply proves how astoundingly terrible our GMs and scouting departments have been. It's beyond comprehension how supposedly experienced professionals could be so bad at their job.
I have a feeling Becton is going to take this off-season very seriously. He’s about to become a father soon and it will change his perspective on life. He’s going to come back in great shape and I think we will see the best version of Becton next season.
By no means am I a draft expert but who ever said Becton was a malcontent leading up to the draft? Don’t ever remember reading that report.
This is just my humble opinion. I have tried to think outside the box some. I would trade out of our original draft slot with someone that is in love with Evan Neal. Bag additional picks for this year and next. Try to build a bank account of draft picks. Sorta how the Pat's do year after year. With Seattle's pick we own take Tyler Lindbalm. That kid solves several issues for us. McGovern can kick to RG, AND we would have a decent back up center for once. With Hutchinson and Thibodaux being long gone know one else solves our problems and are worthy of that 4th pick. Now of course if Hutchinson or Thibodaux is still there than screw it and take one of them. I am still taking Tyler with Seattle's pick
He had a good College career, no injuries, and he was rated high by all mock drafts. Then had a really good first season, which he ended up very strongly: Run blocking was good all year, and he drastically improved pass protection to top 10 in NFL in last 7 weeks of the year. The guy looked like a sure future Pro Bowler - much like Wirfs, but on left side. There were a lot of people, including former linesmen like Baldinger raving about him. Unfortunately he came to the 2021 camp overweight, struggled, was constantly injured, never quite getting in shape, and then out for the year. This was really sad and pathetic turn of events for him that he is now close to being injury prone bust. But picking him at the time had merit and looked really good after the first year.
I don't know but I'm not the one who was doing in person interviews with Becton, his coaches and peers like JD was. Him failing the combine drug test alone would've given me pause though. The combine drug test is an IQ test and to fail it is inexcusable tbh. Not that I care at all if he smokes or whatever but it shows a concerning lack of discipline at a bare minimum to not pass that test. This pass protection grade is from a small sample size and is at odds with the amount of sacks Becton gave up on the year - 7. I want to say Wirfs has allowed 2 sacks in his entire career (in twice as many games as Becton has played) and he was there at our pick of course.
Worse than that though was that Wirfs was present who gave every indication his FLOOR was well above league average. Its not like it was Becton or some random safety we were choosing between.
Why does everyone have to be so polarizing over players. We aren't getting Work we drafted Becton. Let's hope he pans out, that will only help the Jets. I am not happy with Becton but I am also not writing him off
I think we all hope he works out but I've seen enough red flags at this point to not believe that he will.
Sounds like you are on the I hope he will fail take. Criticize all you want he deserves it but let's hope he succeeds not hoping he fails to prove us right. We have to deal enough of that with Zach. He played well last season for a rookie but as you say has big red flags. Not coming back this season is the biggest. Guys looking for reasons not play usually don't succeed in the league.
I'm a Jets fan first and foremost, why would I want our first round pick from a year ago to fail? I said I want him to succeed, I just don't think he will. I find it a lot more interesting to speculate about what will happen rather than what I want to happen since I think most of our interests are aligned here as Jets fans. We all basically want the same thing, the interesting part is trying to predict what will happen or what we should ideally do.
I think Becton may very well regroup this offseason - dedicate himself to getting into tiptop shape and remind everybody why JD took him in 2020. I also think JD would be wise to run to the podium if Neal is still on the board at #4 (assuming the pass rushers are gone). Moses probably isn’t going to be resigned and Fant will be 30. Another young stud at OT would be a smart move. Neal can anchor RT for the next decade or he can slide into LT if Becton doesn’t change his ways.
The problem is that even a healthy, in-shape Becton is a very big square piece in LaFleur's round-hole of an offense. He was brought here to be the man-to-man mauler and LaFleur is devoted to the zone blocking. Otherwise I do think he could turn it around. I truly believe he has all the pieces to be great. God blessed him with size and agility that is rare even in a small subset of the population (NFL) where everyone is blessed with size & agility, he still stands out. He reminds me of Bryant McKinnie. McKinnie too struggled staying in shape. This offseason is absolutely critical. If he shows up to camp out of shape again, then its gonna be hard for anyone to defend him
I agree that this is the main issue. Even if he shows that he's dedicated and applies himself, he's going to be asked to play in a way that will put a lot more additional stress on his body and I think we can expect to see consistent injuries to him, limiting his availability.
I’m with you 10000% on getting the center, albeit I’d trade down and get an extra pick in doing it. For all the checks etc they make + how invaluable mangold and Mawae were for years, it amazes me how it’s not a premium or boarderline premium position. Also, that Pauline report worries me on Becton. I wonder how he would react if we took the Neal guy early, apparently he’s got a sense of entitlement meaning just him showing up will be enough. Could very well be ticked off with a rookie coming in to take his “rightful” spot. Lastly, Nania makes a ton of good points, but all Bectons games that made those stats were last year, in a different scheme. One apparently he was suited for, this one he supposedly isn’t. And we have some proof, Lawson ate his lunch during camp. And if memory serves, didn’t the eagles and packers beat him up too in camp?
