To my eyes, he's getting better game by game. If that trend continues, I think he'll go into camp as the presumed starter. I cant imagine he'll be in legit competition for the starter position.
Are there other positions on the field where the voting majority here would be satisfied with less than the best man getting the job?
I would be opposed to bringing in a quality LG to compete for that position. To what end is this hypothetical open competition? Are we trading for Jimmy G, Wilson, or Rodgers to really really push little Joseph Smith (our Mormon saviour)
Any competition is to find the best guy for the job. It is totally unnecessary to conduct such a competition if the team is satisfied with anything less than the best player available for each roster slot.
I don’t think it’s going out on a limb to say our CS believes they already have the best man for the job at QB.
I agree. Maybe if the CS felt that he reached his peak potential then maybe they would start looking elsewhere & have open competition, but he is just scratching the surface of his potential.
Really? You've read their minds? Therefore a competition would simply be a waste of time? No sense at all in seeing if they can get somebody in there who can do the job better? It seems to me that's the way the Jets have operated for decades. Oh well...
Yes No Yes Correct I disagree but it seems by your logic, every team sans 5 or 6 should have an open QB competition every year, am I understand you right?
It's so much more simple than that. Every team should have a competition for every roster slot, not just every year, but constantly throughout the season. The logic is simple - the best guy plays. Playing a guy simply because the GM took a flyer on him is a recipe for failure.
I understand what you’re saying, I paraphrased it accurately. Imo coaches keeping an obviously more talented player on the bench bc of a less talented player a GM took a flyer on is as big of a problem as illegals coming over and stealing our jobs.
I have no idea where you're going with this. The only thing I know for sure is that you're willing to let better players sit on the bench because you don't want your chosen ones to have to compete for a position. You're entitled to look at things that way but I disagree completely.
That’s a horrible miss-take of my view. Bc you were “for sure”, you should second guess all your other beliefs. Every. One. Of. Them
If a QB threw 28 INT's, had a 56.7 completion percentage, and passer rating of 71.2 in his rookie season, should he have to compete to be a starter the following season?
Anyone defending a choice other than "Open QB (competition) where best man gets the job" is advocating for allowing a lesser player to play over the better one.
Anyone advocating the CS take time to hold a real competition at every position every year is not based on reality. In theory, every training camp is an open competition and everyone is all for that. You sound like you want reps spent evenly at every position while the coaching staff spends equal time with with every player… and that’s not realistic. We could have saved time if you’d answer my fist question “to what end?”. Mike White will be there so there’s your competition… or do you want a better competition and we trade for Rodgers?
