This is tricky because if Douglas doesn't show confidence in Wilson he's essentially putting a spotlight on the fact that he thinks he may have botched the pick. Would it be the right thing to do for the team? Sure, but GM's usually don't do things that overtly make their own choices look bad. At the end of the day everyone is looking out for themselves rather than the team when push comes to shove. Same reason GM's break the bank on free agents when they sense they're on the hotseat. It's no longer about what's good for the team but about what might save their job. I think this fact is probably a big reason Mims hasn't been traded or let go yet. He's clearly done with this team but Douglas can't bring himself to publicly admit he was a totally botched pick. We're entering similar territory with Becton as well. It may well be that the best thing for the team would be to ship Becton off for some picks but that would be a huge indictment of Douglas.
Maybe, but Zach has done nothing but show he is rookie for the team to change to direction on him. The GM will ultimately be judged on win and losses not picks so holding on to Mims and Becton as you suggest would actually go against your premise of self preservation. It is at to early to throw towel in on Becton after having a successful rookie campaign. Concerned yes, the ready to get rid of no. Mims is different all the talent in the world bit had not grasped this offense at all. He is cheap and will get another training camp at minimum. What would you actually get in a trade for him anyway. He has two games ,minicamp and maybe training camp or he just might be out right cut.
I could see us getting a third or fourth rounder for Mims and I'd take that in a heartbeat. Douglas has shown the one thing he's unquestionably elite at is getting good value in trades. The tricky thing with Becton is that if you give him another year and he gets hurt again or plays badly then you're not going to get anything for him in a trade because it'll be obvious to everyone he's unreliable at that point. You have to pull the trigger on a move before it's clear to everyone that he's a problem. Becton is tiptoeing that line right now, you could reasonably argue that he's a good talent who's gotten unlucky with injuries or that he's a headache and will never put it together. Douglas knows better than any other team where the truth lies in that equation and if he feels he's a lost cause he should get something for him before it's clear to all the other teams too. How many times have the Patriots cut a guy and the narrative has been "What?! How could they cut THAT guy?! He's good!" and then the guy goes on to suck? It's happened a lot and that's because the Patriots are the smartest franchise in football and they do things that go against consensus because that's the only way you get value for guys on the way out.
Agreed. Now is the time to get the most value for Becton. Sure he might rebound and become a Pro Bowler, but the greater possibility is that he continues to struggle to stay on the field. But even if we traded him and he became a Pro Bowler with another team, consider this: What's the difference in performance between a Pro Bowler and an above average player? Typically not much. So the question is: Is it more likely to see Becton become a Pro Bowler with the Jets, or for the Jets to be able to find an above average player to replace him? Given they already found one - Fant - the answer is obvious.
Yeah I think Fant is young enough to be a stopgap until we find a younger, longer term solution at LT before he gets too old and drops off. Fant's really played very well this year, I want to say he's been one of the best pass blocking LT's in the NFL. That's extremely important for Wilson's development.
Unless ZW cannot come to the camp not ready due to a significant injury, you go to the 2022 season as him being the QB regardless if he struggles the rest of the two games this season. You live and die with him. At the same time we need a backup veteran, whether it’s Foles a good one someone mentioned, or White ready in case they need to make a switch in mid season. if he fails miserably in 2022, you go to the 2023 trading for a QB, by then hopefully the team will be more balanced and have the right offensive players set up for the QB in 2023.
From what I have heard it’s not considered to be a great draft. The Jets may be better off giving these guys the off-season to figure things out than trading them for a less talented player.
One angle that has not been approached here is what if we do go for gold and trade for one of the elite qbs available. We have the draft cap and cap room. We have a good RB , when healthy good wide-outs, our o-line has improved all yr. On defense we get some players back and Salah can still add a few pieces through free agency. If Salah is the coach we think we do not need studs on defense to make us a good defense. Even if we keep Wilson and get a Rodgers or Watson. Wilson could be the one holding us back.Imagine Moore,Davis, Carter with a real qb. We are at the top of the division. Overpay for a guy like Geisicki from Miami at TE and we are knocking at the door of the Super Bowl if Salah can field a top 10 defense
Unfortunately the Jets aren’t a QB away. The Bucs were loaded with talent when they acquired Brady. He was the missing piece. That’s not the case here.
Bringing in another QB for a competition next year would be a HORRIBLE decision. In fact, it’s such a bad idea, that only the Jets would do it … and even then, it’s not going to happen. We just drafted a QB at #2. When you make that investment that means you just married yourself to giving him every opportunity possible to succeed. You do that by giving him as much support as possible. That’s the way it is. That’s the way it was 5 minutes after we drafted him. And that’s the way it will be for a MINIMUM of 17 more games. Sorry fellas … there ain’t gonna be no QB competition in camp next year. Accept it and hope for the best.
Of course he doesn’t suck and of course he’s better than Zach Wilson right now. If you don’t get why it’s still incredibly dumb, you’re beyond help.
I can't imagine a single scenario where Russell Wilson signs off on a trade trade to the NYJ. The guy wants to win. Why would he go to a rebuilding team? The notion is absurd.
He won’t sign off on a trade to the Jets but he did sign off on one to the Giants. Why, I do not know, but it appears as though he’s more open to muddy situations than you’d think. Strange though as the Giants are in shambles.
Probably because the Giants have won a couple of SBs in the past 50 years and the Jets have won none.
The problem is that Becton's value is VERY low right now, and Mims I don't think has any value at all. Imagine if you are a GM of another team. Are you willing to part with ANY pick for Mims right now after seeing him outplayed by the likes of Montgomery and Smith? Same for Becton: yes potential is there, but how much would you give right now for him? Even a third round pick might be a lot to ask. Probably 4th or below. That would be a tough one to swallow for JD. Better take a risk: if Becton can be competent again next year, you turn 4th into 1st (or even keep the guy). If not, yes you lost the 4th, but that's not that much of a loss compared to the possible gain.
Unless he would get at least a #2 in return, yes, I would hold onto Becton and hope for the best. There's no point in giving him away, especially since they need all the OL help they can get. Fingers crossed Becton straightens up and becomes the long term answer we hoped.
I posted this in another thread too - I think it also proves that Saleh had less to do with their defensive success than what was advertised. The 49ers front four is back to dominating with a healthy Nick Bosa because he’s probably a top 5 player in the league.
