I don’t think so. I’m more disappointed in Lawrence than I am Wilson. I expected to see what I’m seeing out of Wilson. I figured Lawrence’s rookie season to look more like Darnold’s as a floor and he’s been just straight up bad. We don’t need to have any different expectations because rookie quarterbacks that look as bad as all three of these guys struggle to find NFL success when their first year looks like these guys first year.
Wilson’s team played better offensively, but of the ground game you’re referring to Wilson accounted for a full 3rd of it himself. Even if you disregard the endzone toss up Lawrence still had a worse game. It’s not bias, it’s all there on tape to watch. It’s not an indicator of their long term success it’s just one day. Neither had a ton to work with but considering the injury and COVID losses the Jets had, you certainly can’t argue that Wilson had a much better supporting cast. The eye test says it was better and so do the stats. It’s not like it was Manning compared to Leaf but that’s not what I’m saying. In key stats, Wilson wins. TD’s, turnover worthy plays, and negative plays. And keep in mind the Jets trotted out a defense full of replacements, and it was already ranked 32nd to begin with. Wilson’s best pass catcher by far was a #5 WR who is a return specialist and has never broken 400 receiving yards in a season. Lawrence didn’t have a loaded corps but at least he had Marvin Jones, a veteran with 6,723 career yards and 54 career TDs. I’ve said Wilson was bad when he’s been bad, and I’m not calling him the second coming. But he was better than Lawrence this week… pretty straightforward. Wilson: -63.6% completions -193 Total Yards -2 Total TD -0 Turnovers, 0 Int, 0 Fumbles -1 Sack, -2 Yards Lawrence: -66.7% completions -317 Total Yards -0 Total TD -1 Turnover, 0 Int, 2 Fumbles -1 Sack, -28 Yards
I’ve been very critical of Zach … mostly because he hasn’t played very well at all…mid-50% completion rate was the norm in the 1970s when the defense could actually hit QBs and WRs, but it absolutely sucks in today’s game. Too many turnovers and not enough completions. But really the main reason I’ve been concerned is the piss poor accuracy OUTSIDE of the times when the crappy OL let pass rushers through and when the crappy receivers kept dropping passes….those things to me are the signs of us being a horrible team. No…what has had me concerned is the piss poor accuracy when he keeps throwing balls into the dirt five yards from an open receiver, or when he keeps throwing the ball behind guys that leads to half the drops or picks. all that being said, I am glad to see progress in the way of fewer picks, and thanks to a little luck with some dropped picks yesterday, I believe it’s now three games with no,picks. That is good progress. hard to get excited by 170 yards last week followed by 105 yards this week, but I kind of feel like that’s been more due to the lack of open receivers more so than him fucking it up. I’ll have to watch the game again, and it’s hard to see on the TV feed because you can’t see the field fully, but that’s what it’s felt like. I really want to see that statement game…multiple TDs, or 300 yards, etc, but honestly with the current health of our receiving corps and the two defenses that we will face in TB and Buffalo, I just don’t think that’s in the cards. but another couple of efficient games will be nice. they will be tough, but we’ll see
I mean, we saw the oozing Mims potential, and he was just chilling on the bench. Surely we will be able to spin Wilson's play into an OK game
Exactly - I don't think even Mahomes or Rogers could have a game like that with our team, not to mention a rookie. Brady would get mascaraed with this O line. We need better weapons as simple as that. Right now the best we can hope for is for Zach to manage the game with low TOs. Zack is not getting a breakout game with Barrios as #1 receiver and Mims, Smiths, and Montgomery's of the world as his supporting cast.
If we want Zach to have a 400 yard 4 TD game, it'll have to wait until at least next September. What he can do over these next two weeks is show competence and doing the best with what he has.
Upon further reflection (and re-reading) I humbly admit I got it wrong... Zipped through the game this morning... Zach did do more with less. I thought his biggest fail was not getting us a touchdown on our last possession to put the game out of reach. I joked before the game that Trevor should find a new career if he couldn't beat our defense... but obviously he has talent. He did fuck up at the end of the game... kinda like what we would do... spiking the ball on 3rd & goal was dumb. I also think he pussed out by going out of bounds at the 5 yd. line... I think he could have scored quite easily.
So far, the overall eye test says Zach is headed for journeymen status and a career as a backup when his rookie contract ends. Nothing about the eye test says FQB. This could change in the coming years. But that change only happens in about 1 outta every 10 QBs in his situation. The experience test says were doing Sam all over again. "Just wait until next year", until we finally call uncle.
You keep saying that? Where is the proof? Go around the league with all NFL starting QBs. How about the past five or ten years? Winston and Mariota had decent rookie years then busted. Josh was horrible his rookie year. Baker had a good rookie year and where is he now? I don't think how you do your rookie year has any bearing on your long term success or failure.
I don't just watch the Jets, I watch a lot of football. Good QBs show things that indicate they will be a FQB during their rookie year - even if they struggle. The only thing Zach has shown is that he wasn't ready for prime time and its highly unlikely he ever looks anything like that one great BYU season during his stay in the NFL.
I’ve posted it plenty of times. What top quarterbacks in this league in recent history have thrown for more interceptions than touchdowns their rookie year other than Allen (anomaly) and Goff (below average)? Alex Smith I guess? None of these guys have even looked consistently competent, let alone a net positive. That doesn’t mean they can’t be good or good rookie years = instant success. But it’s an uphill battle to be a good player after a failed rookie year or else we’d see it more frequently in the modern day pro-offense NFL. When Andy Dalton and Daniel Jones types come into the league and go +7 and +12 in ratio during their rookie years, you know the rookies should look more competent than they do. Edit: forgot Stafford.
They show confidence in their ability to run the offense at a high level. They exude a leadership that instills hope and more often than not rise to the occasion when given the chance. They are the ones to step up in a crises and move the chains. Recent example include Burrow and Herbert from last season. This season Mac Jones, and yes, even that 3rd rounder Davis Mills have shown it. The only thing I can say about Zach's season is that he wasn't ready to be an NFL starter yet. The fact that Flacco, White, and Johnson have all outperformed Zach speaks volumes. Even with Whites INTs he still showed some qualities of a FQB that have been missing with Zach.
That is not very scientific and excludes a lot of factors. Not to mention a very very small sample size. Most rookie QBs struggle and most highly drafted rookies struggle because they are on bad teams. Even rookies that start off strong usually come back down to earth.
Yeah I must be paying him because he thinks the 32nd ranked QB isn’t very good this is a horrible cycle. Jets get a QB, hes great on this board even though he never wins, then they give up on him and everyone says he wasn’t any good
