I like the way Zack played today, in fact, every game he plays with 0 turnovers I consider a success. Was wondering where his running was all season long. Maybe it was the bad knee that prevented his running until now. Want to see him with a good OL and better WR's and RB's healthy next year before saying anything. This was just a(nother) terrible season all around for everyone.
That's the main reason why I never was a huge CMart fan when most other Jets fans LOVE him. With the exception of the year he won the rushing title, he left a LOT of yardage on the field every season.
yes if you are a jags fan your first thought is for TL to run over that guy and get into the EZ......i mean this is football right. not so fast - these guys are trained to save clock and the last thing he wanted to do is get stopped short with the seconds ticking away. i am sure someone already did or will ask him what he was thinking during that run. he is going to be a good one. reminds me of bledsoe. like most QB's, he is gonna need a mountain OL in front of him.
Yeah Lawrence definitely should’ve tried to truck through four defenders with 30 seconds left and no timeouts. Lots of valid gripes and reasons to like one or the other. This is not one.
You could look at it like 11 years of Curtis Martin ducking the big hits or 6 years of Shonn Greene running people over. I know, not really comparable players but I think it makes the point.
It's an age old question Anyone old enough to remember the controversy with Franco Harris approached Jim Brown's total rushing yardage, especially from Brown himself, about how Franco avoided the hits and ran out of bounds? IIRC Brown even challenged him to a nationally televised race, which I think Harris won.
Nice to see some logical posters on here like you Vilma. It’s a shame more people can’t be the same and criticize Lawrence for not being Superman and set him to a higher standard than Zach.
I think the big difference was really the time that Lawrence had. The Jets had absolutely no pass rush for the majority of the game and Lawrence could just sit back, wait for his receivers to get open (college open, not NFL open), and make easy throws. He did that all game and was able to keep his team in the game. A missed extra point and a bad decision by the jets to go for it on 4th down at the end of the half helped immensely, but still, they had a chance to win. If he had really tried, I think he could have forced his way in the end zone on that late run. On the flip side, when Lawrence was pressured, he made mistakes. He fumbled, and had a bad sack for a huge loss. Then we have Wilson. He was under more pressure for the majority of the game, and made good decisions and good throws most of the time. He ran when it was there and didn't turn it over. There were drops and he has Denzel Mims on his team which is a negative any way you look at it. Overall, I agree that Wilson had a better game even if his numbers looked paltry in comparison.
What has been impressive to me the last two weeks about Zach has been his poise, his command of the offense, his confidence in and moving in the pocket. He has not looked this confident and comfortable since preseason and the Carolina game. In the Miami game he was able to exploit some short yardage situations by getting the team set quickly and hurrying tge team to the line to call a quick qb sneak before the defense could get sit. These are tge type of plays other teams do to us. Throughout the season we have seen him checking out of bad plays into good plays to exploit presnap reads. His intelligence and understanding right now is very good for a rookie but it has taken all season for his confidence and nerves to catch up. I am not sold on him long term as his problems this year have been mental from trying to do too much which makes me worried will he always get nervous under pressure but seeing him play with confidence the last few weeks is encouraging. In regards to Trevor I thought he was impressive even if it was against the leagues worst defense that only had 3 starters. He made some big time throws. But, he lacked the poise of Zach and pocket awareness. A prime example was Trevor spiking the ball on 3rd down at the 1 with 12 seconds. Zach would have taken his time got people set and ran a play leaving enough time for a 4th down play. Trevor choked this and rushed those last two plays. Zach seemed far ahead of Trevor in processing speed and being able to run the offense under pressure. That said Trevor is going to be very good and I have more confidence in Trevor being good than Zach although I think Zach's ceiling is a lot higher.
You're right @Jonathan_Vilma is a logical poster--maybe the best all-around--but, the premises are wrong--there were not 4 guys to get through--I thought there was 1 and then a leap into the endzone. Even if he doesn't make it he spikes it next snap. It's hard to argue your position since they ended up losing when he had a chance to win it right there. This was basically a typical football play that's been done a lot and TL should have tried for it.
I wouldn’t have been upset if he went for it, but through the viewpoint of the quarterback in his helmet view, he had one defender in front of him and three converging on him from three different angles on the right. They beat safety into these guys heads because they’re the franchise. So I get both points, but with no timeouts, he’s setup from the 4 with 4 plays to score to win the game. I don’t think it’s much of a reason to criticize him. Wilson also had a very lucky thing happen to him on his long run when the first defender actually pulls up to avoid a penalty.
I'm still not worried about Zach in the least. IMO the fact that as a rookie he's seeing and doing a lot of things mentally (or at least trying to) that normally only veteran QBs do says that he is going to be a very good, if not great QB for the Jets. He's settling down now, as you stated, his confidence is growing, he has a better grasp of the offense, and I think this year, with even as difficult and challenging as it has been, is going to wind up being great for Zach. You can't face much more adversity as a rookie QB than Zach has this year. Just about everything that could go wrong for a QB has: lousy play calling early on, an OC that wasn't helping him get into a groove, horrible blocking, WRs dropping passes, WRs getting injured, WRs running the wrong routes, dumb penalties by his offensive teammates, poor adjustments by the coaching staff, poor clock management by the HC, offensive starters getting injured or covid, losing his starting LT, having no good TEs, having his TEs and RBs not know their responsibilities and whiff on blocks, completely taking a pounding, getting injured, facing a number of the top Ds in the NFL, and his mechanics and confidence deserting him in the midst of it all while his head was swimming. From here on, things should get easier and easier for him, the game should slow down, and if the Jets build a solid offense and team around him, the team should start winning next season. Conversely, I don't think Trevor is going to be that good. If any of the rookie QBs should have thrived, it was Trevor. He played for one of the top collegiate programs and played topnotch competition every year. He was groomed to be a QB from the time he was a child getting sent to prestigious QB camps. He was hyped as a generational QB. Yet, he has struggled badly. I'm not saying he will be a bust, but I think he could struggle to become even as good as Bledsoe. For one thing his accuracy has never been great. He isn't as cerebral as Zach, and may not work as hard as Zach. According to his own father, he may not have that burning desire to be great that Zach has.
Disagree. There are reasons QBs slide or run out of bounds instead of being tackled. In a meaningless game, what is the point of risking an injury? It's not like Lawrence is Josh Allen, he's 6'6" but has a string bean frame at 215 lbs. He ran out of bounds with 30+ seconds on the clock with a first down on the 5. If your playing professional football, you have to assume your team, no matter how bad, can score from that position or you don't belong on the field, not to mention the opposition having the worst defense in the league.
I think the whole situation is summed up nicely in the section on the Jets/Jags game in this article from the The Ringer: https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2021/...-16-jonathan-taylor-joe-burrow-baker-mayfield Ron
I look at things a little differently. Clearly if there is one thing Wilson has is toughness and grit. May be fearless to the point of being reckless. I need my QB to play safe. Having said that, yesterdays run was neither by the way. It was perfectly executed by Wilson and avoided all hits while staying in bounce. Kudos to him. That score won us the game. Trevor looks to me more carefully in his approach to running and that is perfectly fine. The big difference to me yesterday was something completely different. Wilson, unlike Trevor , had literally zero NFL caliber WRs to throw the ball to beyond five yards. Berrios was our saving grace on short slants but that was it. Mims and Smith where non existing. Embarrassing actually. If Wilson and Carter did not take the game over with their running it would have been a disgrace. Hard to believe Jacksonville had a worst play calling day that the Jets. For Wilson to develop further, this team needs to look hard at a core of superior WRs and TE that avoid making this offense predictable and one dimensional. Wilson has a way to go but needs talent to help him get there.
I don't have a problem with Lawrence running out of bounds. Like previously stated, 1st and goal from the 5 against our trash can defense is almost a given. Now let's reverse the situation and it's Zach who runs out of bounds in that spot. There would be a 10 page thread deildicated to calling him a pussy.
I agree completely with the first part of your post, but I disagree that Lawrence isn't going to be that good. Barring injury, he's going to be very good at least. Of course lots of things go into that equation, like the team around him and the coaching, but I believe he'll have success in the NFL. That said, I still think Zach has the higher ceiling, and because of his intangibles and ability to make plays off schedule, is and will be the better QB for the Jets. Yesterday provided support for that conclusion. Oh yeah, and one other obstacle that Zach faces that I don't think Trevor does (I don't follow other teams or their fan sites so I don't know), is the antagonism from his own fans and media. A less strong player would've crumbled under the adversity and the amount of doubting Wilson has had to face, but Zach has continued to stay positive and keep working and it's showing. As you said, all of this is only going to make Zach a much stronger and better QB going forward.
