We has none. All we have is excuses... so let's hear 'em. My excuse through this miserable season was that the scheme sucks. It wasn't putting players in the position to make plays. I still think it sucks... but now I'm not sure our players would succeed in any system. Our D-line is especially sucky... no push, few sacks, and gashed repeatedly I knew our offense would struggle... but the defense was supposed to be serviceable under Saleh. This embarrassing chart says it all. https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/most-points-allowed-nfl-2021
It's a lack of talent, with too much youth. It's hard to tell If the scheme Is shit when the talent just Isn't there.
It all starts at the top and the DC is shit, he is so shit I can't even remember his name without having to go and check and I'm not going to, Salah should take over for the rest of the season, I am still unsure of what a HC does if he isn't either one of DC or OC at the same time tbh. The D is an embarrassment bar one or two guys.
It's a lack of talent, a lack of ability to make adjustments (they still can't cover a damn wheel route), and a lack of wanting to not suck. Edit: It's also a lack of having a QB on the offense that can manage to move the offense on occasion.
The defense was always going to be a work in progress this season because the Jets were changing from a 3-4 to a 4-3. Now throw in that the Jets 3-4 personnel was kind of underwhelming in a 3-4 last season and are being asked to play roles for which they are not ideally suited. The only Jets defender in the front 7 who is very well suited for the role he is playing is Quinnen Williams at 3T. He was actually miscast as a 5T last year. Mosley is ok at MLB but really more ideally suited to Mike in a 3-4 with somebody alongside him to take on blockers.
JETS are 29th in the league with the defense being on the field. That's the 3rd worst time in the NFL. They are out there all damn day. So yea, that counts for something.
We make every QB and RB look like Montana and Sanders. There so many holes on both sides of the ball I not even sure where to begin.
Linebackers are not good, safeties not good, edge rush is not good. Not surprised by the backers, missing maye and Joyner horribly. Edge and backers need to be addressed this off-season amd not just with the return of Lawson. On the bright side , Echols and hall on the perimeter is a good combo if you get the rest fixed.
I realized as I was writing the post above that Saleh really should be able to patch together better than an all-time bad defense from a bunch of role players and he certainly has better talent available than that. The consistent failures on defense really do not speak well to his ability to coordinate or manage his staff or the talent they have available to them. The Jets do have some holes on the field but the front 4 guys aren't natural holes. There is some real talent in that group and they are playing about as badly together as is possible. The LB's are not as talented but it's not like they're slugs either. There is some speed there and they should not be out of position on the average play the way they are.
I’ve been saying this all season. EDGE LB and safety are all top needs. Yes even with Lawson coming back ….. I really think they should stick with Echols and Hall and see how that combo fares with an improved pass rush. Add a CB in FA with experience as an on the field mentor. Don’t draft CB high … go for those other 3 positions on D.
One could make an argument for that but I doubt it will happen. I’m gonna say 3 defense and the other will be OL.
The only thing we know for absolute certain is that, whoever we draft to fill these many positions of need, they'll suck.
It's almost entirely on the coaching. Yeah, they need more talent, but the talent is no excuse for performance this poor.
