Fields has sucked pretty bad, but I’d argue their situation is worse than ours from a supporting cast point of view. White/Flacco/Johnson have collectively looked better than Dalton has in the same situations. Regardless, we’re going to find out these answers within less than a year anyways. Year two is massive for all of these QB’s.
Fields is likely going to have a new coordinator next season though. Fields & Wilson both have a lot to learn but Fields will have more to learn, with a new system to grasp as an addition Maybe the Bears will shock the world and steal Ryan Day from Ohio State and Fields can run his college offense. That would be entertaining
There’s an article in the Athletic today about Zach’s accuracy issues. Executive summary: he started sucking once he became a Jet. Which checks out.
I’m sort of sick of hearing about how he has the yips? I’ve seen it several times around her and it’s a nonsensical argument. There are plenty of accurate college quarterbacks who get to the pros and struggle to throw accurately because the game is moving so fast and they’ve never felt the pressure they’re feeling before in college while making simpler reads. That’s not to say it can’t improve as experience does slow the game down. But the argument that it’s all mental, blah blah blah, is silly. It’s a function of the mental working in cohesion with the physical. And he’s struggling with that right now. It’s OK to say out loud.
Great post. Mike MacMoron decided on Hackenberg based largely on his Pro Day. Same with Douglas on Wilson, or so I understand. Watching a QB throw unrushed to receivers without a defense on the field should mean squat. Wilson and Browning Nagle can throw a 100 mph fastball, but a QB has to have touch, read a defense, be a leader, anticipate a blitz, etc. Wilson to me looks to be in so far over his head--like the 9th grader piloting the varsity. Would like the jets to play White the rest of the season to see if he can start next year.
Or, he started sucking once he reached the NFL. Which also checks out, it just points the root cause of his struggles in a slightly different direction. And none of it really matters. We are where we are. Whatever the root cause of his accuracy issues are unless he corrects them and starts to make the easy throws look, well, easy he will not make it in this league either with the Jets or elsewhere.
Yeah, the game was/is still moving too fast for him right now and it's throwing off the physical aspect of his game. I don't know what other people are referring to when they say he has the yips, but messed up timing throws off everything.
White played like utter shit in his last game and moved nothing. Threw 4 picks. He is also 4 years older than Zach and has been in the NFL for 3 years.
Not that I'm attempting to start an argument by any means but this is one of those cases where the facts don't tell the story. Mike White had everything in the universe going against him in that game including probably the very law of gravity itself. The Jets were buried 10 points back by our defense before he even got half a chance, facing probably the best defense in the NFL, sabatoged by GVR who was the 100% cause of the first and most important interception. If he'd managed to have done anything better than get run over that day he should probably be getting chances now to prove he's the better starting option going forward. I know Zach didn't play the next week either but I think half the reason White was even out there that week was to be a bullet sponge and keep Zach from getting bulldozed the same way he did.
Josh Johnson played the majority of the Colts game down: 21-7 21-10 28-10 35-10 42-10 Then the Jets started scoring pure garbage time points. Let's paint an accurate picture here.
But theres got to be some word or phrase to differentiate between what is happening to Wilson and what happened to Geno Smith for example! At a basic level they were both accurate QBs in college that struggled completing passes in the pros. But we both know from having watched them play that the stories were very different. Smith couldn't process the game and find the right receiver. That's not Wilson's problem. Wilson can't throw it to an open guy 5 yards in front of him. Geno Smith could. Wilson sails it over the guy's head or straight into the ground. And these are the same "simple throws" he was making in college. If that's not "the yips" then what is it?
Wilson wasn't missing short passes by a mile in the beginning of the year. Not sure why the new narrative is he can't do it now. This is a recent thing with him (bouncing balls to open guys in the flat.)
Wasn't he? I'm pretty sure he's had similar issues since game 1. From very early on I've been concerned about his accuracy on the simple gimme throws. I'm sure it was game 1. It's never looked completely like normal rookie problems to me - he's done that a bit too, but its never been a big issue.
It was nowhere near as bad as it is now. His big issue was reading the defense and holding the ball forever. At least that's how I remember it.
That might well be true. He may not have thrown dirt balls in game 1 but I'm sure he sailed a few lay ups that made me go WTF! The dirt balls may well be an overcompensation thing. Whatever it seems its in his head now. Hope he can clean it up because there is something there if he can.
I truly believe he is more than capable of completing well placed short passes. I'm not sure why it's all of a sudden been this huge deal with him. I really don't believe it's a talent issue. I keep thinking of that beautiful pass he threw to Cole in OT against the Titans. If he can make that throw, he can make these short, out of the backfield passes that all of a sudden are like kryptonite to him. Maybe I'm worng, but I really think he will improve. I'm definitely not ready to throw in the towel on him.
My god! You'd think we were talking about Hackenberg II here! Yes, his accuracy has not been what it was in college, and he's made some ugly passes, but he HAS been accurate in the past (highest completion rate in college last year), and has made some great passes this year. People here are just panicking.
