I think it’s pretty much understood that we’re not taking a first round quarterback this year even though I’d appreciate it if the Jets regime at least considered it. Without making this a Wilson debate, I always like the idea of taking mid round quarterbacks regardless of who your starter is. You can luck into a Matt Schaub for a second round pick scenario if they stick on the roster. A couple guys to consider. Sam Hartman from Wake Forest. Not the most accurate guy in the world but he’s thrown a million passes the past two seasons and has played a lot of football since taking over down there. Smart kid who absolutely loves football. Phil Jurkovec from Boston College. Not exactly the most modern version of a NFL quarterback as he projects to play similar to Big Ben. Big dude with a big arm (when healthy) although he’s had some throwing arm problems. Bailey Zappe from Western Kentucky. Pretty much a Mike White clone from the same college. Weak-ish arm but will find the open receiver and holes in the zone. He’s been in a ton of shootouts and has lead comebacks.
Putting on my homer-hat again but another name to keep an eye on for in this mid-round range is Will Levis from Kentucky. He's an incredible athlete who has a good arm. He's still a work in progress on the accuracy front and his mechanics sometimes fall apart especially when facing pressure but he could be a worthwhile dart throw in this range.
Last I heard is that he's leaning towards returning but Dane Brugler also just listed him as his 7th best QB prospect in the 2022 draft. If a couple more reports/columns/etc. come out like that, I could see him leaving. I think it's in his best interest to stay, work on his game for another season, and push to be a top-5 QB prospect in the 2023 draft but I could also see him being a Combine star and rising up boards right before the draft and landing in the 3rd-4th round range this year.
