If you walk away with Becton, Davis, Hall, and Mann as contributors, that’s an ok class. It’s not winning any championships alone but it’s still a 44% hit rate.

AVT was definitely a risk that’s paying off big time. Becton is one that is causing concerns.

I've probably written a book on why you don't trade up over the years. No need to add to it here.

I suppose having a rookie QB who’s development depends on the OL wouldn’t be considered mitigating circumstances then.

There are no mitigating circumstances. The NFL stands for Not For Long and putting multiple picks into one guy is always a loser move in that context. There are other enormous issues also but NFL is the biggest one.

No team trades up in the 1st round more often than the Jets.

How is that working out for us?

Mann is the worst punter in the league and Davis is just awful. I doubt they walk into next year with him as a starting safety. Becton seems to be a big question mark. The class looks pretty bad right now.

But as you said, one bad class, one good on
That’s not really completely true. Franchises don’t bury themselves when they fuck up on drafting a quarterback high in the draft. They fuck up when they draft a bad one and marry them for 4-5 years. Mitchell Trubisky and Daniel Jones are both good examples.

I'm on the negative side of the argument even though I really like Hall but we definitely should have opted to keep Morstead. That was a gift that Joe threw away. I hope it was worth it. Maybe Mann has been playing injured all season or something, because I don't remember him being so bad last season.

Becton may never suit up again for the Jets IMO. And Davis looks like one of those typical Jets safety projects that has a long term ceiling of average.

Joe sort of gets a slight pass from me because he was drafting for a different CS and different schemes, but he also lacked the forethought to find more versatile players. And there has been some shady shit with him and player injuries. Joe is hard for me to figure out.

I see JD as a victim of the Jets franchise chaos at this point.

With all the hidden mandates and long-term mismanagement it is very hard for anybody to come in and effect positive change.

That's why I think the next guy has to be the boss of everything football related with no mandates coming in from above him. Nothing is going to change if we keep doing the same things we've been doing for the last decade+.

I put some thought and analysis into the things I post. They're based on long experience and a significant amount of study - much of which is documented in earlier posts.

    You obviously do not.

Yeah well I think the best we're going to do with this ownership group is trying to catch lightning in a bottle like they did with Rex and hope for better results. No respected veteran coach will ever leave their situation for this organization. There's no reason to expect anything but bush league trash from the top levels.

those circumstances would have been mitigated before the draft if JD did his job well in FA

It's going to take a huge ego to come in here and fix the Jets.

The guy is going to have to be able to shrug off pressure, subtle and otherwise, from owners, media, fans and peers. He's going to have to have an unshakeable belief that he has the right plan. He's going to have to be able to will that plan into existence and avoid the failures that lesser men would suffer.

In other words he is going to have to be Bill Parcells 2.0.

The closest thing to that likely to be on the market is Jim Harbaugh.

If in hindsight AVT would have still been there at 22, then ya, probably a bad trade. But the 'team' felt he'd be gone by then and were probably happy he was still there at the Vikings pick. I think I read JoeD and Vikings had already talked about a trade up before the draft, so JD was all over this from the get-go.

AVT is a 10 year starter here. I am fine with it. Darrisaw looks good for Minnesota BUT, Fant is well deserving of a 3 year extension and could very well be our LT next year. Dude has been awesome next year. WHats' bad is the 2020 class. You just cannot wiff on all of those picks.

    Josh Allen
    Patrick Mahomes
    Lamar Jackson

Three of the top 5 QBs in the league were traded up for. And if Deshaun Watson didn’t sexually assault people, 4 of the top 7-8 would have been traded up for. How much thought did you put into this exactly?

The idea that Joe Douglas is a bad drafter is confusing to me. He has had two drafts with the Jets. His 2020 draft is bad, even if Becton stays healthy and Hall continues to play at a high level.

His 2021 draft has been very good. We got our potential FQB and three solid starters already, two of which I view as having potential to be elite players in the NFL in AVT and Elijah Moore. Michael Carter is a solid RB, the jury is still out on him becoming a workhorse, but he has already proven he can be a great piece in a RBBC. Throw in MCII and Eichols, who has been a contributor for us, and 2021 is looking very good.

Depending on the outcome of the 2022 draft, I think we might be able to chalk up 2020 to a bad coaching staff wanting players for a bad scheme.

This makes it seem like you don’t know what you’re talking about.
The Jets traded up in the 1st round twice in the last 11 years, from 2011-Present.
    -Sam Darnold
    -Alijah Vera-Tucker
That puts them tied with 11 teams for 10th most 1st round trade ups. Whether you look at franchises who trade up frequently or infrequently, you’ll find success and failure on both ends.

    CLE 5
    SF 5

    ATL 4
    PHI 4

    NO 3
    MIN 3
BUF 3 (4 If you count them trading up twice for 1 player in the same draft)
