My biggest concern is that Zach looks a little more capable in the late stretch but it is really a mirage. Sanchez, Geno and Darnold for the most part looked over their heads and not really viable starters. However they all put together some short decent stretches which led the team to invest another 2 to 3 years in them which simply just set the team back further. I don’t think this kid has what it takes to be successful in the NFL.
It's about a $17M dead money hit post-June 1st next season. That said, nobody is proposing the Jets cut Wilson. A trade pre-June 1st has the same $17M dead money hit and post June-1st it's like $5.7M. That said, nobody is proposing the Jets even move on from Wilson in 2022. It's easy to keep him on the roster and bring in another real option to compete with him. In 2023 it is easy to move on.
This is exactly the problem. How much time and effort do the Jets put in to a 10% prospect and what does that time and effort do to the rest of the build? Richard Todd cost the Jets 2 years easy on their path back to respectability and that was when the NFL was not parity and it was completely unclear that they had other options on the table.
One of the toughest things to do in management is the ability to recognize a sunk cost. You want to tank the rest of this season to evaluate Zach? I don’t like it, the coaches and players probably don’t like it, but you live with it. However, the idea of potentially tanking yet another season to evaluate Wilson is not appealing to anyone. Sure, let him compete for the job, but it can’t be handed to him. As others have mentioned it would have been one thing if he turned in a Darnold level rookie year. Wilson has been worse than Darnold, Geno, and Sanchez. It’s not looking good for him.
Have you been on Twitter and Reddit? The vast majority of Jets fans are bashing Wilson. It’s nothing against the kid-I’m sure he’s a great guy, but we have every right to be pessimistic. We’ve watched young QB after young QB come here and fail.
If the QB can't operate within the offensive scheme, then you change the QB or you change the offensive scheme. Since we just drafted this kid #2 overall, the obvious point is that you change the offensive scheme while he learns. I don't care if you have to make every single pass play a single-read play ... or simply cut the playbook by 75%. Make it work; that's the coach's job.
They can’t do it very easily because the defense is terrible and quick 3 and outs would kill them, but I’d like to see them try to get the ball snapped quicker. Stop leaving him back there to try to decipher three different pictures the defense shows him in 15 seconds. Get the play in and roll it.
If every Jets fan on Twitter decided to cut their left hand off, would you do it? I'm on Twitter and most Jets fans on Twitter are ignorant morons. They know next to nothing about talent evaluation, how to build a roster, and not much more about the game itself. Just because they're ranting and raving like maniacs doesn't mean that you have to buy into their crap. How logical/rational is it to assume that because other Jets QBs drafted by the likes of Idzik, Mac, Bradway, etc. have failed, that Zach will when he was drafted by JD, and JD had a very good if not, great draft this year, and is the most qualified GM we've ever hired? I get that the team has a history of awful hires, wretched drafts, and not having a clue, but we've never hired anyone as qualified as JD before to be GM and with the exception of Weeb and Parcells, never hired the consensus best candidate for the HC job before, either. I've been a Jets fan since '64 and I'm not ready to jump off a bridge, fire Saleh, or draft another QB, even though I'm not happy with how this season has gone so far. Just because things have gone poorly in the past doesn't mean that things won't work out now. I get being tired of losing, but NOTHING the team could have done would have turned it into a winner this season. Our roster didn't get into awful shape in one year, and it's going to take longer than a year or two to turn things around. Like it or not, we're going to have to be patient. This is the best chance we've had to build a winner in a long, LONG time. There are no shortcuts. Impatience will get neither us nor the team anywhere.
While that's understandable and fair to some extent, how has that worked out for us in the past with Fitz and McCown? We had what, one good season in 2015? Good starting QBs don't become available in FA, and not very often in trades, and when one does trade for an average or better veteran QB one pays through the nose for it with draft picks, which would then prevent the team from building around that veteran QB. So you'll be happy with 6-10, 7-9. 8-8, and maybe a 9-7 season or two? I sure won't. I haven't rooted for this team all these years and suffered through so much to just accept mediocrity.
No, I was just adding mostly to what you've already said... I guess my main point of difference though Is that I don't think our OL Is really that bad. The OL has held up very well In an offense that looked the best I've seen It In years, without the rookie under center. Can the unit be better? Sure. Much better though? I have a hard time seeing that. Regardless.. This OL Is miles and miles ahead of anything Sam Darnold had.. The rook has to play better and that OL Is good enough to run a very good offense behind. It's been proven already this season. I desperately want to see It with Wilson. We deserve It as fans for pete sakes.. lol
When all else fails.. I just blame NE and Belicheat. The arrow always seems to point back to that fuckerten In the hoodie when It comes to our rookie QB's. Sigh.
Nobody needs to see what Wilson did in college anymore, he's in the NFL and he needs to compete at an NFL level, not at an artificially reduced Covid related college level. Comparing him to another Jets QB failure, another of the worst NFL quarterbacks, does not make Wilson look any better. That is his reality. He's seeing speed and complexity he's never seen before and it shows glaringly that he is not ready for it. He wasn't ready to play in the NFL on week one and week twelve showed little, if any, improvement. How long a leash does he get in week thirteen?
It is not that rare these days - Brady; Stafford; Wentz all moved very recently and it looks very likely Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson will also be moving next season (as will Garappolo (though I don't think he is better than average))
Getting more OL talent will help and next year's OL will be improved, but will be harder than BYU vs weak teams.
