here is a list of late picks (day 3), waivers, UDFA and cheap trades JD has added in just the last 2 offseasons

bawden (just added and had a nice catch for us and a few nice blocks)
    carter II (5th)
    berrios (waivers)
    dunn (UDFA)
    LDT (free trade)
    flacco (trade 6th)
    JFM (waivers)
    Guidry (UDFA)
    hall (5th)
    ty johnson (waivers)
    shaq lawson (cheap trade)
    Braden Mann (6th)
    pinnock (late pick)
    jeff smith (UDFA)
    Quincy Williams (waivers)
    elijah riley (waivers)
    carter (4th round)
    echols (late pick)
    huff (UDFA)

then you add in the prized players like becton, wilson, moore, AVT, mims, Corey Davis, Lawson, mcgovern, and a few cheaper ones like moses, kroft, fant, and all the extra picks and the cap room. JD is really doing a great job building this team 1 block at a time

Guys who make the team and play simply because there’s no one better in front of them are not ‘successful’ acquisitions.

How many of the guys he acquired are even starters in the NFL?
and of the ones starting is it because they're good or cause the team sucks so bad at that position?

The Zach and JD guys need to stop upselling so hard especially this early.
It's gonna be a few seasons...

Is there really any team you can name that plucks multiple starters out of thin air? I thought the point was that JD is finding talent for little to no cost, which is true. I’ve been pretty critical of Douglas but to deny that he’s done a great job on the wire or in UDFA (or even past day 1 of the draft) is just wrong.

No, they usually just hit on their high draft picks and free agent signings. It’s an absolute joke to try to trot out some of the guys on this list as some sort of success.

It’s the David Nelson effect. Remember when we signed him and he caught a couple solid slants and we all thought he was a steal because he was better than Saalim Hakim and Stephen Hill?

Jeff Smith, Pinnock, Isaiah Dunn, Bryce Huff, Guidry, Braden Mann, etc. We’re happy about these guys? They’re a dime a dozen on every NFL roster.

Correct, which is why I've been equally as critical of Douglas.

    No.

You named all the guys I wasn't talking about at all. My original point remains: we've gotten multiple starters that would probably start on other NFL rosters as well, for little to nothing. JFM, Quincy Williams, Bryce Huff (even though he's on your list), Berrios is an above average PR/KR, LDT was basically acquired for free.

Douglas is good at finding talent where there's a lot of muddy waters. The problem is he can't find talent when the water is nice and clear.

I don’t really give Douglas much credit from trading LDT because it just negates his horrible evaluation to bring Van Roten back as the starting right guard. Yeah it’s a nice patch fix and it was a good trade, but Van Roten wrecked a couple different games by himself this year. On top of the fact they left him on the field..

Bryce Huff has four sacks in 20 total games over two years while being a massive liability against the run. Is he any different than Frankie Luvu?

“Well he did something decent a couple times!” isn’t really enough to be a solid acquisition.

We’ll see what happens with JFM. Nice find or not, he’s now a well paid player that has disappeared other than last week, since signing his extension.

Again, I'm not disagreeing that JD has made some terrible moves or non-moves. GVR was one of them, but then he also righted the wrong when seemingly there was no clear upgrade available. And Frankie Luvu is a rotation player in Carolina with a few starts this season so if that's what Huff is I'd say that's pretty solid value considering he was a UDFA.

Right. If Huff is a situational pass rusher, coming from being a UDFA, that’s a success. You should know better to use a count stat like sacks, when he has very good pass rushing rates when he was playing.

The others maybe a dime a dozen, but they are also young guys who may turn into good/rotational players

Yeah we used the “advanced” pass rushing stats that netted us 5 sack a year Carl Lawson.

You should know better than to use subjective “stats.”

So Frankie Luvu was a successful acquisition a couple years ago? Maybe Huff ends up being better. Or maybe he’s just a guy most teams have on their roster that ends up playing special teams and some spot snaps.

Finding him as an UDFA and fulfilling that minimal role means you couldn’t fill that role with different assets. This roster is filled with late round and UDFA players because the roster has been trash for 8+ years. So it’s been turned over and mediocre to bad players are forced into playing time while it’s rebuilt.

Simply being on the field doesn’t make you a good NFL player or acquisition, regardless of how you got onto the team. The defense has been dreadful all year.

o course we are a couple years away still. I don't expect 2022 to be a good season either. but I do think in 2023 we can compete if he does good in the 2022 draft and zach progresses

It is because the Jets have been so bad that Douglas can experiment with the scrap heap.

Other teams, like those in a playoff race, can't afford to throw a Elijah Riley out there and see if he's any good. Also, being such a terrible team has given the Jets a high priority in the waiver wire, which is how they were awarded John Franklin-Myers for example.

    --

For as many "finds" as he's had, he's had equally as many bums that washed out. We just don't remember them. Like a Sheldrick Redwine, who he experimented with and the guy got beaten so badly out there. We remember Elijah Riley, because he wasn't as bad. Redwine was Douglas' 1st choice.

Does that mean he's bad at finding guys because he chose Redwine first? Or is he good because Riley is good? Neither, its just a scenario where if you throw enough crap at the wall something will stick

Oh you mean Carl Lawson who was going to get a big contract if not from the Jets, but from another NFL team?

But let's listen to Jonathan Vilma, message board expert, instead of NFL scouts and coaches who use better data then just "sack numbers"...go see what Chargers HC Brandon Staley thinks of sack numbers. Think I'll go with his expertise.

The Jets have been mired in roster mediocrity for years, so guys like Huff who were UDFA's have had a chance to make this roster and make waves mores because the drafts have been lackluster to say the least. It doesn't and shouldn't discredit what Huff is as a potential piece to this team. So he struggles against the run, he maybe more of a situational pass rusher (btw he has a high pressure rate). That's absolutely a need for a team who's lacked in that area for years. And again because a guy isn't drafted, it doesn't nor should discredit his potential as a player. Those guys can do just as much as a player who was drafted high.

You’ve been taken things awfully personally lately. Any reason for it? Constantly complaining about the fan base too.

Who cares what they think? There are a lot of bad football minds in the league, just as there are here. Staley is coaching to near .500 football while his defense has allowed more points than his offense has scored. His idiocy in going for it consistently in his own territory finally caught up to him after working early on.

We’re allowed to form our own opinions that don’t align with what the talking heads tell us should matter. There’s a place in the football world for advanced analytics and I’m sure each team has their own evaluation of what they mean. Carl Lawson is one of the few players with a high pressure rate that didn’t result in a lot of sacks. Sacks & pressure rate are generally synonymous, so something’s funky with that. On top of the fact that he was three serious injuries in when we signed him.

There’s a reason the Bengals let him go and signed a guy that actually gets to the passer at a similar figure with just one more year.

No one said someone’s production should be keyed in on based on how they were acquired. But just because they step on the field, it doesn’t make them a success story as a result of being a UDFA.

Exactly we need more people like him. This is a good story. Wishing him and the Jets the best going forward. We are long overdue for some good things to happen.
