I think his point is when Rex got more of his players, the team got worse. There's some merit to that. They went from 9-7 to 11-5 to no better than 8-8 the next 4 years. The 2009-2014 draft classes had one impact player in Wilkerson, who dogged it after getting paid. And yes, trading up all the time didn't help either.
Ah yeah, that's definitely true. Rex had a big role in picking standouts such as Quinton Coples and Mo Wilk. He's definitely partially to blame for them. Side note: it was always crazy to me that we drafted so many IDL and moved on from the best of the bunch (Richardson) rather than the others.
No. I'm saying that Mangini and Tannebaum worked well together to find talent. When Rex came, Tannenbaum struggled to find talent and Rex didn't do well with identifying players that were talented and could succeed in his scheme. When Rex got his guys, the team got worse.
No worries, I didn't word it too well. Work has me spinning at the moment and I'm procrastinating everything.
If the worst thing you say about Rex is that he didn’t draft well, then maybe he’s not as awful coach as you claim.
A lot of the draft comes down to where certain guys wind up because they will be coached the way they need to be coached. Was Rex Ryan able to develop the guys the Jets drafted? The answer to that question is no, otherwise Rex would still be here or would have gotten fired much later. He was a good coach when he had a veteran roster that did not need to be developed. When the older guys were phased out for younger players, the Jets were not good and Rex struggled. Not saying Rex was overall a bad coach, but he struggled with developing young players and didn't know shit about offense.
It’s somewhat of an organizational flaw though Rex’s bravado probably made it hard to keep him out of personnel decisions. Especially after his big head got bigger following all of the success. If Rex had a GM with a nutsac to tell Rex we weren’t drafting 60 5techniques to try to recreate his dads Bears defense, he might’ve lasted the decade.
I dont think so. A guy like Rex with the big mouth and bravado only works for so long. He was a great motivator when he first got here but they were tuning him out by the end. Same thing happened in Buffalo, year 2 there he was like a running joke to the players. Dont think he was ever the type of coach to last a decade anywhere, under any circumstance. And thats just fine, some guys are like that (Gruden is one of them for example) -- Also, Rex would blow 3 time outs and 2 challenge flags in the time it took to read my post
I think Rex had more staying power than you give him credit for. All the weird stuff with the foot fetish videos and Sanchez tattoos and stuff might’ve made him more of a joke. You’re not wrong on game management though.
Given what we have been though recently, just to think, Mangini got fired after 9-7 season. Two of 3 years are winning seasons and one play-off appearance.
Well those 8-8 teams certainly lacked talent, and Rex made up with coaching and team cohesion. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don’t know what Saleh is yet, but it ain’t looking good. But Ryan needs to shut up. He took Mangini’s team and ran an aggressive defense that surprised the league for a little over half a season. Once they caught on to him, and Mangini’s players left, he sucked. As evidenced by his “stellar” coaching record after leaving here. Saleh deserves criticism, but not from that clown
This week's story. Silly stuff. When the Jets accumulate talent and don't win he can talk. They need two more drafts and free agency. You win with talent and experience. Right the club lacks both.
If I didn't know any better I would think he still wanted that Jets headset, and is bitter Saleh got it.
Calling Saleh a bad HC doesn't change the fact that Rex wasn't a good HC. It's only a measure of how desperate Jets fans are for some bright spots that he's even looked as a fond memory in an otherwise dismal history. If you asked me to choose either Rex or Saleh, I'd choose Saleh in a heartbeat.
Hope you feel that way in couple of years, that means Salah righted the ship! Rex wasn’t that bad, his real downfall was personnel decisions, he was really bad at drafting! Not specifically coaching. But he had some good runs with the team, and was at least fun (i.e. burying the game ball). He gave us suffering jet fans some good memories. For sure. Belecheat face after we beat him in playoffs! Priceless. If he had won a SB, he would have gone down in jets lore. But he fell short…. And couldn’t get back to that level due to talent depletion, where he had fault.
