This has to be one of the dumbest made up controversies in Jets' history. For those who don't know, Rex has a regular guest-spot on the Rothenberg DePietro show. The purpose is for him to come on after every game, and give his expert analysis of what happened in the previous game, answer any questions, and talk about the next game. It's a free form thing. What usually happens is that he says very little about the game itself, and seems to go out of his way to take shots at Saleh, and remind everyone of how he had the "5th rated defense" when he coached the Jets. While he sometimes mentions his own shortcomings while with the Jets, they are quickly excused. Rather than provide the analysis he is supposedly there to provide, the spot usually ends up being all about Rex. I never heard anyone compare Saleh to Rex on this show. When Rex started his rant about people comparing him to Saleh, my reaction was that he was just making up a bunch of BS to create controversy. , I realize that Saleh now feels the need to defend himself, but I would rather see him focus all of his time and energy on his responsibilities as head coach, than get down in the mud with a former coach of the team, for no productive purpose.
Identifying talent in FA and the draft is the GMs job; it is the coach's to look at players the GM identifies and figure out if they are the right fit. Tanenbaum and Mangini were great at finding talent. When Rex came in, all of a sudden Tannenbaum struggled. The coach needs to develop talent. Did Rex ever actually develop talent? He's talking himself up like he's Lombardi. Rex was a good coach when he was already given the talent needed to win.
He didn't call out a commentator. Rex went out of his way to rant about him and Saleh was asked about it. That was his response. Again, don't see an issue with his comments
The coach needs to develop the players he has. Did Rex ever do that? I'll also try to clear up what I said. The GM needs to find talent, you're right. The coach needs to be working with the GM to identify the talented players that fit in their scheme. I believe Rex struggled to do that. His big picks were Mr. Finger Wag, Kyle Wilson, Muhammed Wilkerson (I'll give them this one), and Quinton Coples.
I disagree with this statement. Rex simply said not to compare him to Saleh who is doing a horrible job as coach. He wasn't talking himself up like Lombardi he was merely saying he was better than Saleh who might be the worst coach in the league and in over his head
Exactly. He had media obligation, he was asked a question, and he spent literally a few seconds answering, just like any other. It's not on his to do list or anything like that, spent no extra time on this that could have gone doing anything else.
I would probably handicap it at Saleh -230/Rex +270 to win. Saleh obviously has the advantage the longer the fight goes on because he’s in great shape. Rex has knockout potential though. He’s a big man, in shape or not, and big men swing hard with knockout potential early in fights.
Rex Ryan is a commentator - Saleh said "he knows where to find me." That's pretty much the definition of calling someone out. And the issue with Saleh's comments is that he should have better things to do with his time. It seems like he can't handle the pressure and he's acknowledging it's getting to him by such comments..
Fun fact: The 2000 Ravens defense which coincidentally Rex was member of the coaching staff allowed 165 points the ENTIRE SEASON. The Jets have allowed 178 points in just the last 4 games.
This has gone too far and become a distraction. Its a nationwide story now. All the players know whats going, will be asked about it, etc. Thats usually a bad thing. However, we'll see if the players rally around Saleh or not. If so then maybe its the fire we needed to get on track. If not, we could be getting answers about Saleh's future this Sunday.
Rex is good at coaching defenses with good to great corner play and keeping himself relevant. Revis may be to Rex what Brady is to beli, without all the hardware
Belichick might have been knocked down a peg without Brady, but he can still coach and his rookie QB is doing the best out of the 2021 draftees.
I wish this wasn't becoming a big deal. Who cares what Rex said? His job is a commentator and that's what he did. He also likes the spotlight and now he's getting it. Not sure I like Saleh's response. But whatever. Moving on.
I don’t really have much of an issue with Saleh’s response in a vacuum. But I do have a problem with this becoming a bigger story and his dopey brother making this about Rex personally.
Is the implication here that Rex squandered Tannenbaum's talent? I don't think I'd agree with that if so. Tannenbaum put himself in a hole because he loved trading up and signing FA's to big contracts. That can work well in the short term but the wheels come off that strategy within a couple years as the missing draft picks and big contracts start to pile up.
