Gee its like nobody ever thought of that? . That's been the blueprint for beating every young, inexperienced QB since the beginning of the forward pass
I'm not a mike white fan and i know it's nitpicky but you might want to retire your "HoF" snark. this is in the hall of fame right now
But White doesn't have the skillet to beat that defensive game plan. You can't say that about "every young inexperienced QB since the beginning of the forward pass."
I'm happy for him. I never disliked him, and thought he could be our long-term backup. My snark was aimed squarely at those who were saying that he's better than Zach and should be starting the rest of the season and have an open QB competition next TC, all after one start.
Let's be fair here, that one start was better than anything Wilson has done on the field as a pro and that then leads people to gravitate towards White. Fuck Wilson has been bad, White was god awful yesterday, it just makes me so frustrated that we are left floudering about looking for a QB still, Wilson may well be the long term answer but he has got a lot to learn before that becomes a thing imo I wasn't for him before the draft and neither particularly agaisnt him either, I was a little concerned, I flat out didn't like Jones who stunk his prodays out, Fields was a worry as well and Lance a longer term prospect which I would have been good with but not at the number 3 pick. At the end of the day I just want an above average QB as a minimum requirement for us to get behind, surely it isn't a lot to ask for?
First pick he got hit on release, two others he was duped by the Bills defense the other one was a bad throw as it was behind and let the defender drive straight to the ball rather then have to go through the receiver. Maybe Zach is elusive enough to avoid the pressure on the first one, maybe he somehow recognises the danger on the other two (although its the kind of rookie error we'd kinda accept will happen) perhaps he throws a better ball on the fourth. Regardless, I don't think 'peak' Zach would of made much of a difference in this game nor any other QB out there when the D keeps getting stomped. Mike White is decent enough to be a back-up and even a starter over a stretch of games but assuming he's now healthy we have to roll with Zach so he can make his mistakes here and now in our lost season rather then next year when we probably expect better from both sides of the ball.
It was smart for the Jets to not only figure out what they had in Mike White, but also to allow Zach to miss the Bills game. Now the rabid fans will shut up about Mike White, and Zach gets an extra week of rest and gets to come in against a below average Dolphin team. Zach would have probably had a similar fate to White against Buffalo, which would have sent the fanbase into a frenzy.
White's interception rate is worse than Wilson's. It's 6% ffs. That's awful. He's played what? 12 quarters? And he's thrown 8 interceptions.
Yes, that one game was a great game by White. Still, anyone who has watched football for any time at all and who knows/understands anything about the game, one doesn't annoint a player a "savior" or a "bust" after one game. As I've said, I get it. Jets fans were desperate for some excitement, for a win, to see good QB play. That said, I think the main problem for Jets fans in general, were their own expectations for this season. The average Jets fan is a casual fan. Either because of work or family responsibilities, or lack of interest, he/she doesn't spend a lot of time reading, listening, discussing the Jets, and doesn't really know what's going on with the team. They just want to see a competitive team every season and they expect the GM to go "all in" every season to win as many games as they can. Well, imo that's what causes so much dissension and frustration among most Jets fans. Their expectations are not reasonable. Most of those of us who spend a lot of time here reading and discussing the Jets, knew that this year was going to have its share of struggles with a rookie HC, rookie OC, a rookie starting QB, a ton of rookie and young players who would be seeing a lot of playing time, and few quality veterans. We knew it would have its ups and downs, but we expected week-to-week improvement, to see the development of the young players, and for the team to be at least competitive in most games. Most of us knew that the team would probably only win 2-6 games. We knew how bad this roster has been from all the horrible drafts by Idzik and Mac and atrocious FA moves. The team still had dead money from those awful contracts clogging the cap, and we knew that it was going to take time to turn things around. Most everyone was ecstatic with the hiring of Saleh and most liked his CS. We expected a lot better from them than we've seen. That is definitely concerning and frustrating. At this point we're probably stuck with them for at least one more season, so we're going to have to hope that they will do some soul-searching, talk to colleagues, re-examine their coaching methods and philosphies, and hope that JD can add a lot more talent to the team this offseason. With the cap space we have and all the draft picks, as well as the 2022 draft seemingly lining up with our needs the way the 2021 draft did, we should have most of our major holes significantly addressed, if not solved by next season. For me, the biggest disappointment, frustration, and question mark is the team's lack of discipline and fire on the field. They don't quit, but I don't see the passion/fire on the field that I expected I would see from a Saleh-coached team. I think he needs to stop treating them like grown men, and demanding accountability from them. He doesn't have to yell or scream, but he needs to let them know that he means business and that the stupid penalties and mistakes will not be tolerated. Regardless of where the team is talent-wise next season, the team needs to come out prepared to play, and be competitive. They need to fight and claw and let the other team know that they've been in a fight. If not, then Saleh needs to go. I've had it with "players' coaches."
I'm not worried about Zach, especially now that Beck is on the Jets' CS. I don't know the specific details of how Saleh's D scheme varies from others, but is it possible that there are no real adjustments one can make to this scheme, especially in mid-season? His scheme is based on gettting the DL up the field and attacking, if they were able to adjust and read and react instead, how would that affect the rest of this D scheme? It seems to me that it would then expose our secondary even more than it has been. It might slow down other teams' rushing attacks and help our LBs, but then without much of a pass rush, opposing QBs could just sit in the pocket and pick our D apart, much like they've done for the last several years. Also, if he scraps his scheme now, how many weeks will it take for those adjustments to settle in? Then next season, does he stick with those adjustments, or start all over with his scheme? I understand where you're coming from and there may be a lot of truth to it, and adjustments that Saleh could make that he's just being stubborn about. If so, then he deserves all the criticism he gets. I get that a HC wants to go with the schemes that he has the most experience with and the most confidence in. If one doesn't have the talent to run that scheme, however, then it seems to me the wisest course is to use a different scheme or make adjustments to allow for the players one does have. If sticking with this scheme was a mistake, then hopefully Saleh will learn from it, and will make adjustments now and in the future. If he is incapable of doing that, then he probably needs to go.
Miami beat a good Ravens team yesterday pretty easily (at least looking at the score) and they supposedly have a better pass rush than the Bills. Zach may not have it so easy on Sunday.
Its not just the INTs. Every pass he throws beyond 15 yards is a train wreck. The guy simply cant throw a decent deep ball. He has no future as an NFL starter.
Saleh is not sounding to confident when talking about Zach in his press conference. He was still praising Mike White. Maybe Mike White is the guy for the rest of the season?
That would be very disappointing. Wilson isn't learning much from a guy who nearly averages an interception a quarter.
All Saleh does is praise people though! Hes a nice guy, no doubt. I'm not sure that provides any insights into his decision making, but maybe. I'm also not sure it helps him as a football coach either. I hope I'm wrong but it kinda feels like they were looking for his personality after Gase and didn't look closely enough at his football acumen
If that is the case, then Saleh should not get a 2nd season. He should be fired following this season.
Three games is long enough for Zach to sit and learn. My only caveat is that usually learning from the sidelines happens when the QB is suited up and standing near the coach on the sideline, watching and discussing the gameplan like a player. Not wearing street clothes and walking around in back with headphones on. That's not learning from the sidelines.
