We're not the NFL head coach farm team. We're the NFL head coach graveyard. Nobody has coached the Jets and then been successful elsewhere since Parcells. Oh and of course Belichik was HC for 18 hours before he bolted for New England. The organization needs a major jolt. Not a defibrillation either - an open heart transplant.
Tampa Bay was a very notable exception. They brought in a bunch of talent through free agency. True it will probably be one and done, but they did it.
Carroll is more of a USC product than a Jet product. I keep looking at what we did this off-season and it's like a vile mixture of all the Jet's organizational sins bundled together. Hired a rookie HC from the defensive side of the ball. Signed a few free agents at positions of need. Paying a couple of tier 2 players like they were tier 1.5 in the process. Picked a rookie QB high in the draft without a viable plan for developing him. Traded up in the first round when the depth chart looked terrible at several position groups. Ran a joke of a competition in camp at the QB position - a coronation instead of a real competition. Spit the rookie out on the field game one despite him not earning his way onto the field other than by way of being a high draft pick. Had zero clues as to how to help him out when it became apparent that he wasn't the second coming of Peyton Manning. It's just so incompetent to keep making the same mistakes in the same ways over and over again.
Just thinking about Patriots top of head Revis, Glmour, Adalius Thomas, Corey Dillon, Moss, Welker, Trent Brown come to mind over the years before even talking about this year. Packers signed those 2 Smiths to edge rush a couple years ago. and this year the Rams and Bucs are in a signing arms race. Steelers and Ravens are definitely less, although Kevin Greene, Bettis, and role players come to mind. Those two teams also excellent at re-signing their own which is just like FA really. Have to spend somewhere to be successful, just like the entire team can’t be high priced. Need the balance.
And they all had top tier QB talent (aside from the Ravens who had an elite defense and a decent QB) - again every team that has had consistent success (other than the Ravens) has had a top 10 QB on the roster - it all starts with that position which is the #1 failing of the Jets in not having been able to develop a great QB in 50 years
Adalius Thomas and Randy Moss never won championships with the Patriots. Wes Welker was a literally toss away so I’d hardly count that as some sort of prized free agency signing. The Patriots signed Trent Brown for $1.9 million dollars dude. The Packers have not won a championship with either Smith’s and the defense has actually been the reason they’ve lost. Ok so we have to dive back into the late 1990s for the Steelers and Ravens to make the case?
The one thing I thought would never be an issue with Saleh is passion. He has seriously let me down. I'm watching the quarterback take hits after the whistle and crappy penalties called on us and he just stands there like a zombie. That is so disappointing.
... 2 more drafts.. then 2 more drafts.. then 2 more.. etc... Players do what they're coached to do. No one unit wins a game without help from the other units on the team. They lack talent because they don't draft talent. 2 more drafts or 200 won't matter.
The 2021 draft has yielded AVT, Moore, and Carter. If Wilson becomes a FQB, that's a grandslam type haul. The 2020 class looks nowhere near as promising.
Yeah I think people underrate how good a drafter JD's been. The 2020 class wasn't good. Becton was the wrong pick over Wirfs and Mims seems like a complete waste as was Morgan. The 2021 class looks pretty good so far though. Our talent isn't great but by far the biggest problem with this team is the coaching. We're undisciplined and unprepared almost every game. We get blown out all the time and don't play with passion.
Farm team for who? Name one coach, even ONE, that has left the Jets and went on to be a successful head coach somewhere else. I'll save you the time. There's none. And don't try with Pete Carroll, it was over a decade later. Not one of the first time head coaches went on to do a damn thing. We're terrible at picking them as much as we're terrible at picking players.
No, it doesn't. It just means that Hess and the Johnsons had no clue what they were doing. Douglas is running the show now. I believe that Saleh could still pan out. One can rightly question using his system when we don't have all the talent/right players to play it yet, but is it really better to play one system this season in which our talent would work better, and then change to a different system next year or in 2023? HCs want to use the systems they know and believe in. Saleh was the consensus best candidate this year. As I recall there were no quality experieced HCs out there. You can't hire what's not there. I was questioning the use of the Shanahan offense earlier this season, but it's beginning to work and bear fruit. I believe the D can still work once we get C. Lawson back and add some more pieces during the upcoming off season. We still have 3 defensive starters on IR, and a lot of rookies/young players playing. One can't accurately assess whether the system will work until we fill some of the holes, and the youngsters learn the D and get more experience.
Exactly. Signing a bunch of big free agents is a lightning in a bottle approach that rarely works, and when it does it's worth it. Which is why it's continually tried. But teams with bottom level talent NEVER succeed in that approach. Never. You have to be close, and you have to be willing to sacrifice a few years of your future. The Jets took the right approach this time, they're just, not surprisingly, executing it very poorly.
You said those teams rarely sign FAs and I just gave you a bunch right off top of my head. So now you gonna pivot to when, how much, and whether they won with that team. While ignoring the other players noted that you can’t find a box for. these are routinely competitive teams that draft well, re-sign their own, trade well, and find both thrifty value as well as high priced value in FA. They have balance with young and older players, high priced and value guys. They aren’t pinching pennies by any means. That’s the point. No one is arguing that high priced players alone is the winning formula, but all teams use FA to fill out roster and add talent.
Although Becton might be the wrong pick, I think it is irresponsible to dismiss him. The 2020 draft class will fall victim to the coaching staff switch unfortunately.
Lack of adaptability due to size should've been considered when drafting Becton. Being gigantic isn't purely a good thing, it comes with downsides like decreased footspeed and agility. I blame JD 100% for Becton not being able to stay on the field. It's pretty common for guys that big to be injury prone. Becton is one of the 10 heaviest players to ever play in the NFL. It doesn't help that Wirfs is arguably the best RT in the NFL already. Becton is a whiff no matter how you slice it. Wirfs was there for the taking and JD took Becton instead.
