I don’t start many threads but I just felt compelled to get your guys feedback. My concern when Jets hired him to be a manager/CEO on the sideline was that his blueprint for the team was in question. He has no input on the offensive side, he already said he’s not going to interfere with the defensive coordinator and what they are doing. So what exactly is this man doing? He can’t manage the clock, or the game, he doesn’t yell at referees when it’s obvious he needs to come to his players defense. He allowed a 5th round rookie safety to be converted to LB, that experiment was a disaster and he continued to allow it. He won’t replace Van Rotten who everyone knows is not even backup material at this point in the season. It’s the same thing every week with this team. Who is he talking to on the headset, nothing changes on the field.
I was very happy when they hired Saleh. But much like Bowles, he seems to be forgetting all the reasons and talents that earned him a head coaching job to begin with. Not getting involved with either side of ball, not showing any passion, not motivating players to play for even pride. it’s disappointing. I miss Rex on the sideline, and how players responded to that type of energy. Hell of a lot more fun as a fan and player.
I don't say anything about Saleh running stairs because I have a feeling it's some personal tribute to 9-11 and the ritual stair walking. Anyway, this guy's defensive track record wasn't what got him hired, it was his infectious personality that was supposed to manifest as some sort of superior coaching. So far all I've seen is a cliché machine with a perpetual look of confusion on his face. This is not what I envisioned from a CEO style head coach.
It looks like Kyle Shanahan is a bit of a fraud at this point as I’m sure his coaching disciples are. He’s going to be under .500 in 3/4 years and his entire team is hurt every year with his top players leading the injured reserve charge. Just like when we hired Idzik to try to copycat the Seahawks in 2013 and tried to do the same again. All isn’t lost but I’m very unimpressed with Saleh and the group of dipshits he brought along in his staff.
I think it's hard to grade his defense. 2 of the 4 groups are easily the worst, at minimum in the bottom 2, in the NFL (safety and linebacker). He's terrible with off script timeouts though. He never helps his team by calling a timeout when they need to help themselves, like before a delay of game.
I don't know why this keeps happening. I don't know if the Johnsons have very strict conduct rules for being a coach or something or if they are the ones more or less making the gameplans and using the coaches as puppets. I know that sounds stupid and it's mostly hyperbole, but I can't figure out why coaches seem to completely change their personalities once they join this team. With the exception of Rex, every coach here just acts like a zombie.
The point about being HC with no remit on either side of the ball has always confused me, like @Red Menace said what does he actually do if he isn't running the D we know he wouldn't be sticking his oar into the O but the D has been an embarrassment, it is hard to believe he hasn't found his voice to offer some suggestions but as nothing changes week to week it doesn't look like he has.
I just don't get why anybody would have hired Saleh to be a CEO type HC. He had no HC experience. I assumed he was hired because the plan was to let him hire his OC and offensive staff from among people he knew and trusted and that would let him drill down a bit on the defensive side to support the staff he hired there. The infectious enthusiasm was all a marketing thing, of course. Saleh is the most marketable HC the Jets have had since Rex - who was also a guy they hired to drill down a bit on defense and get things fixed there. The problem right now is the defensive personnel is a mess and the defensive staff is not experienced enough to chop and dice and fix things on the fly. It's important to remember that while Rex had his hands all over the defensive scheme, plan and play-calling he also undercut the hell out of his defensive staff on a continuing basis. This meant that when Rex's blitzes stopped being effective there were no adults in the room with the authority to fix things. Pettine was long gone by then as he got tired of being Rex's beard.
Rex was basically the defensive coordinator for the first 2 seasons. He said it himself when he got here, he was surrounded by HC caliber coaches. Not entirely true but Schotty had been an OC for a while and Westhoff was like football Yoda. Rex was setup for success there too. Saleh has the leftover STs coach, that meat head Ulbrich and the La Fleur embryo. He's the CEO of a playpen.
He's probably on the headset with the team mom getting the postgame snack ready for the players. Probably a pretty spirited debate between a bag of chips or carrot sticks. Maybe even arguments over what kind of juice to provide. Then, on the rare occasion we don't turn the ball over on offense, deciding when to punt or trot Ammendola out to miss a field goal.
Maybe he can improve but I was hoping he would come in like Mcvay or Vrabel. As rookie HC you could tell they had a great feel for it and had an impact on the game. Saleh is just there.
His responsibility? Getting that 2 million mansion completed with the right construction company And of course cashing 100K checks per month
It would probably be a hysterical movie. If you did it as a decade retrospective, well the Jets have all the Major League elements to incorporate. Rex and Tebow interacting would be a helluva start.
Saleh needs to take over playcalling on the defense as Flo has done in Miami. The phins play not to lose so it is a good time for the Jets to switch the script
