I think it’s going to be a week to week thing. White’s margin for error is very slim. One less than mediocre performance in a loss and Wilson will likely be back in. Not sure why the Church of Wilson is so worried. The odds are stacked against White. He has to play well to keep the job. That’s a burden Wilson doesn’t have to carry as a first round pick.
Nope, back then I paid for the NFL ticket just to watch my Jets. Other than highlights and the occasional nationally televised night game, I didn’t see much of Stafford. I know he had a great arm, put up good fantasy numbers and his team sucked.
I would say if White strings together 2-3 performances similar to his previous ones, then it would take a stinker to pull him out in favor of Wilson
Are we making a playoff run? The thing you have to ask is it better for Zach and the teams development to play him or not. When Zach plays again has nothing to do with how White plays.
Like I said earlier, I try to watch of the rookie QB's. Fields has made some really bonehead plays and gets confused often. That was the knock on him coming out. He's terrible vs the blitz. He'll throw a 30 yard completion and then take a 15 yard sack as he runs backwards. The most telling thing is that I haven't seen anyone saying we should have picked any of the other rookie QB'a over Wilson. Not drafting a QB with the #2 pick is a fair argument but who can look at the other guys and said we should have picked them instead?
This idea that Allen took three years before becoming decent is a myth wrapped in green bias. Allen struggled some his rookie season but he was also injured a lot. He didn't struggle that much afterwards. He led his team to the playoffs in year two, accounting for 29 TDs that year vs 9 INTs. We were just too biased to admit he was developing into a good QB year 2.
You have to think that the league is going to catch up with White, sooner or later. Then, if Zach is truly more talented, he will end up getting his job back.
Sanchez sucked so that supports my argument. He didn’t become a FQB. Stanford and Allen are the only two quarterbacks that have succeeded to be FQB in the modern era that threw more picks than touchdowns. Goff if you consider him a success story.
I agree that Zach wasn't ready initially, but I believe he was learning and making progress. I think it would delay and hurt Zach's progress for White to start the rest of the season. Then it's like Zach is starting over from square one in developing chemistry and timing with the offense. One can learn by watching, but not as much as by doing it one's self. There's a big difference between watching someone else doing something and then doing it yourself. It may help the rest of the offense to develop to have White starting now, but with QB being the most important position and Zach supposedly the future, the priority should be in developing him imo. It would also hurt to let White play the rest of the season, because if he does well, he will want to start either here or elsewhere. The only way White would come back is if he was guaranteed either a competition for the starter job or the job itself, and then the Jets would have to pay him a lot more. With what they have invested in Zach, I think it would be foolish to bring back White, so he will walk in FA or the Jets tender him and get a draft pick for him. That at least would be a positive, but wouldn't outweigh the lost development time for Zach imo. I just can't see JD giving White a big contract and bringing him back as the starter. Even if he did bring White back, a competition could divide the lockerroom, and that's the last thing the Jets need. If Zach resumes starting, continues developing, and plays well, then he and the offense will be ready to go next year. If White has a rough outing vs the Bills or at least shows that he isn't good on deep throws, and doesn't play any more the rest of the season, he might not get that much attention in FA, and the Jets may be able to bring him back on a reasonable deal as a backup. If not, they could at least tender him and get a decent draft pick for him. Zach did nothing to lose his starting job, that's why you give it back to him. The plan, for better or worse, was to start Zach and let him learn and develop while the rest of the young players, as well as Saleh and LaFleur learn on the job. IMO you don't change a plan in midstream unless it was a disaster and untenable, and that wasn't the case. If the rest of the offense was playing the way they are now or close to that level and LaFleur was doing the job with game planning and play calling the way he is now in the first 6 games, Zach would have been doing fine. Yes, he'd have had some ups and downs and made some mistakes, but the team would have been improving. Zach is being made a scapegoat. He deserves the chance to play now that the rest of the offense is playing pretty well and LaFleur doing a good job of play calling. No, it isn't about a playoff push, but you know that and are just being a wise ass. Listen, I respect you and your opinion, but I totally disagree with your take on this. It isn't personal. We can agree to disagree.
It's not a matter of having it both ways. Both things are factual. Except for the Tennessee game, the rest of the offense and the play calling was awful in the first 3 games. Zach was having to carry the offense. Things started getting better in week 4, and they beat Tennessee, and the offense has continued gelling. The light finally went on with LaFleur and the play calling is markedly better and different than it was early, and receivers holding onto the ball. It's not Zach's fault that receivers dropped a bunch of passes early.
If you consider me part of the "Church of Wilson" I'm not worried about Zach in the least. I just don't want to see Zach jerked around and his development delayed by sitting behind a QB with lesser talent and skill. Well, if Saleh keeps starting White, it IS a burden that Zach will have to carry.
I don't think he does, and if not, I think he's mistaken, and risking pissing off his potential FQB and creating problems. So far, I like Saleh as a person/man, but not so much as a football coach.
How is not drafting a QB with the #2 pick a fair argument? NONE of the QBs who will be in the 2022 draft are separating themselves or standing out as great prospects. The Jets would have been going into the 2024 season looking for a QB.
They all get confused. They are seeing coverages they haven’t seen before so I don’t get the relevancy in that. In fact, confusion is what I would place in the normal rookie struggles category. It’s OK to be fooled by a coverage but do you learn from it? He has been getting better against the blitz every week. He was pretty good against the blitz on Monday. One can only imagine how much further along he would be now if he was given the job at training camp and allowed to work with the 1s like his peers. Throwing an INT on a zone blitz because the defensive coordinator drops an DE in the path of your hot route is completely different than throwing an INT under no pressure to a seemingly open WR if the ball was thrown accurately and on time. I will agree he’s taken a couple bonehead sacks (so has Zach) and has shown poor ball security in the pocket. I would have taken Fields at 2 and nothing I’ve seen this far has changed that. There are already draft “experts” (air quotes) starting to change their tune about their pre-draft evaluations on Fields and I don’t even think he’s played “well” yet. “I mean I look at all the quarterbacks I ranked coming out in the draft, I look at Justin Fields and go oh oh that might be the one I’m most wrong about” -“Draft Guru/God” Chris Simms (1:30 mark)
You don’t seem worried. You seem confident in your position about White and Zach. It’s those crying about Zach haters that seem worried to me as though a Zach hater can somehow make White supplant Zach over the internet.
Not according to the evidence we have at the moment he doesn't. He's playing White this week and left little wiggle room in his comments that if White does well he's going to keep getting chances. If Mike White performs solidly against the Bills or even god forbid manages to claw out a win somehow the plot is going to thicken faster than grandma's gravy around here.
