This Isn't that complex. There Is no magic 8-ball saying what the future Is going to hold right now. Nobody can say what things will be, It's the NFL. Who knows for sure? Mike White Is young and unproven. So far though, has looked much better than Zach Wilson. I don't give two shits where Wilson was drafted. I don't care that Mike White wasn't a first round pick. I care about results. Right now. This offense has looked great for two QB's on this team so far. Zach Wilson Isn't on that list. White should continue to start for this team as long as the offense Is functioning at a high level with him under center. It would be dumb to force Wilson In this offense If he clearly Isn't ready. Which, so far, he has proven to us more that he Isn't ready for the NFL than he has being the next star QB In the NFL. White will not continue to start If he doesn't show that he Is capable. However, If White shows that this offense excels with him under center, you ride that out, why In the world would you change anything If the offense Is functioning at a high level? That Is the only thing that wouldn't make sense. The rest doesn't matter. You sort It out when It comes. Bad teams force players Into spots they shouldn't be In. Good teams take advantage of the talent they have and play the best players at these positions, regardless of draft status. We have been a bad team for a long time, so, I wouldn't be surprised If they do force Zach Wilson Into things again, even if Mike White IS playing lights out. We will see soon enough.
I didn’t think he was. Something else we disagree one. What else is new? Herbert is the exception not the rule. For perspective, I don’t think Zach has been awful. I said it before, awful for a rookie QB is looking like you don’t belong. Zach has passed that test. Now it’s a question of will he be special or a JAG. Thus far he’s shown flashes of both.
The Jets would cement themselves as the leagues worst organization if White plays well against Buffalo (and possibly being) and then is benched for a healthy Wilson.
I didn't want to get into a Fields/Wilson debate but to me Fields has looked a lot worse. He has made some great throws for sure but most of the time he looks completely lost. He has no sense of a blitz. He's led to bears offense to new lows. They are the lowest scoring team in the league and they have a legit superstar receiver. His completion percentage is barely ahead of Wilson's, he's thrown the same amount of TD's and he's one behind on INT's. Yet on a better team no one is screaming for Andy Dalton, who is clearly a better QB at the moment.
You never want compare but somehow always feel compelled to. Having watched every snap of both, I disagree. Wilson has been more of the driver of negative plays than Fields. For example, I can reconcile everyone of Fields INTs whether it be a tip ball, thought there was a free play, DE unexpectedly dropping on a shallow cross…etc…etc. A few of Zach’s INTs I can’t explain past WTF was that? Then again, I’m biased.
Absolutely. EDIT: It makes zero sense to me, In this situation, If you find a potential steal at the QB position (however unlikely that may be) you ride that out and hope you lucked Into a true blessing at the most important position In football. IE: Tom Brady Do I think that Is the case we are In? No. Could It be though? I think so. If It turned out to be the case, regardless of what rookie you took at QB, you stick with It. I'm at the point where I'm less worried about being right and more worried about having a team I can truly be proud of every Sunday. I could care less how that looks, how that happens, just as long as It does. At this point.
Totally fair! As I told bickety, I think you have been very fair since the draft started. I have been surprised and disappointed that he hasn 't played as well as I thought, but I think he has been much better than most Jets fans seem to think. He definitely has stuff to work on, most notably to stop playing hero ball all the time and take what the D is giving, but I think most of his problems with accuracy, especially on shorter passes was one or more of the following factors: 1) the OL sucked; 2) at least early on, no one on offense was playing well, and LaFleur's game plans and play calling was pretty bad, if not awful; 3) with the WRs dropping passes, it was hard for him to get into a rhythm, so he started pressing and he felt like he needed to carry the team, so started trying to do too much; 4) as a result of one or more of the first three, perhaps had lost some confidence or was having to think too much. Now that the OL and offense are playing better, LaFleur's in the booth and doing a much better job, I think Zach will be able to relax more and quit pressing/trying too hard, and let his talent take over. Is that fair? Agree? Disagree?
He set Jets records. Not to take anything away from how well Whitre played, but with the succession of lousy QBs we've had, that really isn't saying a lot.
White is a legendary backup! Same as Barkley when he put up a 117 passer rating against the Jets on 2018!
I only judge players on the stuff they can control. So all those outside factors (i.e., offensive line, LaFluer, wide receiver drops…etc.) are already accounted for in my assessment.
IMO for a QB good enough to make it into the NFL and onto a roster as the backup, it should be easy to hit short passes if one knows the offense and can read Ds. It's not easy to have the highest completion percentage. I agree with that, and the rest, especially the last sentence. I have no worries that Zach will do that once he settles in. He was very accurate in college. I disagree with Legler regarding Zach's ball placement. Zach threw some passes in college that on first glance looked like the ball placement wasn't very good, but then the commentators pointed out that Zach put in the spot that he needed to so that the receiver wouldn't take a big hit. I saw him do that numerous times, but also saw him make perfect placement when his receivers were open.
If the Jets had a veteran team, HC, and OC, it would have been preferable for Zach to sit and learn behind a quality veteran. The Jets didn't have any of that. They knew that the CS would be learning on the fly as would all the rookies and young players, so they figured they'd let him learn on the fly and take his lumps, like Peyton Manning did. In retrospect, with Knapp dying, that was probably a mistake, but by that point, it was too late to add a veteran for Zach to sit behind, and White didn't look all that good in TC and preseason.
I guess it could be in some people's perspective, but imo it isn't. IMO "accuracy" is purely whether or not the throw gets to the spot where the receiver can catch it, but not the defender when it's a timing route, or where the receiver will be immediately tackled or on a sideline route, or can easily catch it in stride and get YAC. Timing is part of executing the play imo.
I just want to see Zach run the offense when it isn't run into the line for no gain, running to the line for a loss of one and 3rd and 11. Is That too much to ask?
